Title: My latest " kick"
Post by: Firefyter-Emt on Sep 28, 2003, 07:05 PM
Check this out.. This is what I get myself into  when I decide it would be cool to have a fish in a small tank on my new desk in my new office at home... It started out as a Betta in a small bowl..
Well I have to get any information off the new I can, SO I look into it and find that Betta s don t really LIKE living in small bowls, it is kinda an old wives tale kind of thing.. So now I am feeling bad, poor fish.. SO I decide I will buy him a small tank. Well insert a 3 gallon " Eclipse"  system.. (sweet tank, do a word search for " Eclipse system 3" ) Well then there were the plants.. the " fish friends he now needed to " fill"  the tank...  Good grief.. Dang little $3.00 fish got expensive.. (But, Ido get a kick out of them...

Firefyter-EmtNice looking tank, especially with the Blue Beta Splendens (Siamese Fighting Fish), Cheirodon axelrodi (Neons) and I think i saw some Hyphessobrycon Rubrostigma(Bleeding Heart Tetra)?

May I suggest one other fish... an Otocinclus affinis (Dwarf Suckermouth Catfish) which will help to keep the glass clean of algae.

 Have a great day!

Firefyter-EmtBeen there done that. I started out with two gold fish and ended up with a 55 gal salt water tank and 35 salt water fish and all the the rocks , lights and and filters that goes with it.[:@] Two free gold fish cost me $$$$$$ and I gave the gold fish to my friend[:D] now he is thinking about a bigger tank.

Firefyter-EmtYes, The Betta is gourgous.. He is a dark burgandy with brilliant blue/teal coloring on the insides of the shin between the fins (can not really see them untill he flares)
I have 2 Harlequin Rasboras (Rasbora heteromorpha ), 4 of those neon Tetras, 3 golden tetras (or, Hemigrammus rodwayi) [;)] and 2 golden pristella tetras (
Pristella maxillaris) I am holding off on algae eaters to possiably add a live plant or two..

Firefyter-EmtSorry for the delay on " edit"  .. It took a while to look up those latin names!!  LOL....

I am not 100% pleased with the interior layout yet.. I should of gone with smaller rocks.. Time to change later, and maybe a bigger tank.. LOL  [:D]

 Firefyter-EmtLooks nice.

Dw and DD gave me one of those things for Father s Day last year.

 Fish is now called Hector.

Hector lives in a vase that holds about a gallon or less of water, one peace plant that blooms occassionally and some rocks at the bottom.  This is supposed to be a complete eco system.

My plan for next summer is to buy one of those kiddie pools and practice my flyfishing with Hector.

Firefyter-EmtGene.. Please do that fish a favor.. do a little research on " betta in a bowl"   and you will be supprised, outside of the " sales market"  there is very little nice to say about them.. They Betta needs real food (preferably live food) not plants.. when they " eat"  the plant, they are basicly starving to death.. Also, that bowl should have the water changed 25% once or twice a week..

PS, Here I found one for you..  http://www.petfish.net/lillybetta.htm

Marci.. I used to have a 30 gal tank untill it got cracked.. Maybe I may get back into it like I was.. I have my own room now.. It s all mine... My home office!!  It is like the interior version of a mans garage!

Take a peek, it is small.. kinda " L"  shaped, my desk is stuffed into the small part of the " L" . It used to be the Laundery room.. (still is kinda, washer/dryer behing louverd doors where you can not see them) But I re-did the room, paint, carpet, that sweet (if I do say so myself) wood trim work on the window and well.. it all..

 Firefyter-EmtCan t say I haven t " been there, done that" !! [:D]

Had a couple of five gallon tanks 20+ yrs ago (did I say that??) After we got married, I had on or two 10-gal tanks w/trops & fancier goldfish.

 Scrapped that idea till about 7 or 8 yrs ago, when I got completely carried away w/a 10, 2-20 s & a 2 gal " sick bay"  tank [:o][:o]

Well, after about 3 yrs of DW getting on my case.....a few $$$$ later, & just before the first PU, I finally decided to put a fish tank program on the ole computer, to ease the mind & still keep up the " fish frenzy" !! It was still a " maintainence"  kind of hobby....nontheless, fun!!

 Now, I guess I ll stick to the PU maint....still a brain-teaser sometimes.  [;)][;)]

Firefyter-EmtFirefyter-Emt, I am going off the subject here but where did you get the statue that s on your desk of the 2 firefighters putting up the American flag?

I think, well I know Duane would like something like that.

Oh, I love your fish. I had a fish tank when I was a kid and named the fish after baseball players. Pete Rose ate them all. The last one he took a chunk out of was Johnny Bench and then I was so mad at him we put the tank in the basement and never cleaned it. Pete must have lived another 2 years.

Firefyter-EmtYour sister did that? She did a great job. There is a place near me where you learn how to do pottery. We went there a few years ago with the scouts.  I think it was called A time to Kiln or something like that.  You can go there and take a short class and paint a pottery, then they cook it or do whatever they do (you can see I wasn t really paying attention). Maybe they have it there.  Kristen and I can go check it out and Kristen can make it for him. He d like that alot....

Firefyter-EmtBeen there.  Started out with a 5 gal set up from a garage sale years ago.  It s now a 20 gallon tank in the living room with all the bells and whistles.  We had a variety of fish..but now almost all are fancy guppies (they won t stop breeding).  Thought it was cute the first time we had babies..but dang.  Have some albino bottom feeders, one of those algae eaters that suck the side of the tank (it s a really small one..but the last one grew to about 15 inches before it died, and one that has 2 long whickers (feelers?)).  My niece is trying to get a good tank going with no luck.  She does the ph balance, and all the other things religeously, but keeps " losing"  fish.  She asked what I do..and I told her.." feed, and add water" , seems to work.  You cann t kill these lil guppies off.

Firefyter-Emtheheh boy does this sound familiar! i started with a 2 gal. tank with fancy goldfish, i think the first i had was a pearl scale. well, that quickly became an obsession! at the end, i had a 55 with salt water, i wouldn`t recommend it unless you have alot of time to devote to the cleaning, that is why it now sits empty in the basement. but hopefully, when i see the twins get on that kidergarten bus, pa will haul it back up here for me and i can get back into it. i would like to have one on those bubble eye ones, and maybe,,,,,,,,,[;)]

 Firefyter-EmtF-Emt,

I started with bettas as a youngster and as others mentioned moved up to progressively larger tanks.  My current fish habitate is appx 1,000 gallons and only has 5 fishes in it.  But one of them weighs close to 6 pounds [:D].

They are koi and the pond is the first thing you see when you come in the house.  It is in an atrium in the middle of the house.

Firefyter-EmtWhen I was a very little girl, my Dad won me some guppies at a carnival.  We put them in a small bowl.  Then one of them started to have babies, and the other one started to eat the babies.  My Dad couldn t stand for me to cry, so he grabbed a tiny net and started scooping the babies out, putting them into a canning jar.  Pretty soon the babies started having babies, and we had canning jars, vases, and p-nut butter jars all over the house, all full of guppies.  We gave some to everyone we knew, and those had babies, so no matter where we went, there were jars of guppies.  My mom finally talked my grandmother into taking the ones we still had at home, and the first time they had babies, my Grandpa flushed the whole batch down the toilet.  The rest of the family that had all the other guppies said " HuH???"  (insert that sound that Tim Allen makes) and soon there were no guppies anywhere.   The end.

Firefyter-EmtHee.. I should of mentioned I also used to maintain a 20ish gallon tank set up for about 10 years untill it cracked and I never put it back up, then I threw the rest of it out....   To tell you the truth, I get a lot more enjoyment out of the one on my desk where I can peek over and watch them from time to time...

Firefyter-EmtQuite a few years back in my single days, my roomie and I went through an aquarium craze.  We had a 60 gallon in the dining room, 55 gallon in the living room, a 25 gallon in my bedroom and a couple of feeder tanks for guppies and goldfish.  Our favorite fish were Oscars.  They ate like pigs and grew very fast.  We also had Silver Dollars, Gouramis, exotic crabs, a type of fresh water eel, plecosthimus (sp?), etc.   I remember how relaxing it was just sitting back and watching the fish swim around.  It s a great hobby and probably as addicting as pop up camping.  We used to hang out at aquarium stores checking out the fish, etc! Enjoy.

Firefyter-EmtI had goldfish, neon tetras (like yours in the pic), and some others in college. They helped me through some long nights. We had a big funeral for Barney T. Fish (my goldfish),  in the dorm when he died. (BTW, the " T"  stands for " The" ).

 Enjoy your fish!
