Title: Why??
Post by: Firefyter-Emt on Sep 28, 2003, 07:05 PM
Why is it that womens shirts have buttons on the left and men s on the right?? Why do men wear watches on the left and women on the right?? Anyone have a real answer?? I have convinced my wife about the shirts (just had to go to her closet to prove that..) But why??

Firefyter-EmtCause in the old time men used to hold their swords in their right hands (well mostly) and they needed their warrior hand to hold the sword and fight while they could button or unbutton their protective gear.

Does this get me a 5% discount ????

Firefyter-Emtactually it comes from the gentile times when maid servants dressed the women folk. It was easy for the servants to button them up that way when facing the woman.

QuoteUmmm, what if the maid was a man ? And how about the husband who had to undo them from behind ?

In days of yore, these would not have been questions needing answers.  A man claiming to be a " maid"  would not have lived long enough to worry what side madam s dress was buttoned on.  As for the second part of your question, even though her husband may have undone those buttons, it s not something that would have ever  been spoken of.  That being so, where the buttons were or how they worked was of no matter.

This was a much different time we are talking about.

Firefyter-EmtUh, I may be in some kind of trouble because I wear my watch on my left wrist.  It sure keeps it from being banged against stuff since I am right handed.  Another thing.....I noticed that some manufacturers are playing tricks with the buttons on women s clothes by putting them on the right side!  Clearly says on the label that it is a ladies .  Go figure!

Firefyter-EmtYou heard the story, but does hearing it over and over make it true?  Everyone that I know except my DH and myself wear their watches on their left wrist.  The buttons on the watches are made to be worn on the left.

Firefyter-EmtSimple.  Just because the women wanted it that way, and since for years they were the only ones who did any sewing, that s the way it was done.   [8D]

QuoteWomen carrying big swords
Oh come on!!!   [:D] [:D] [:D] This is getting carried away!  Lee, see what you started??!!  This really started because he told our oldest son to switch the hand his watch was on, and I asked why.  He then informed me that all men wear thier watches on the left hand.  I said this was crazy but he insisted it was true and brought up the topic of womans/mens buttons.  I must admit - he s become a bit obsessive with the answer and being RIGHT!  I believe the button " theory" , but what with the watch thing?  I never gave any thought to it, just whatever was comfortable and less distracting.  [:)]

Firefyter-EmtThey are meant to be worn on the left hand. The handle thingies, buttons are all adjusted to be used by the right hand. BUT, I remember wearing it on my right hand a lot too, becasueit was leaving a mark or was too tight. The thing is, when I put it on the right hand, I couldn t use the controls. So forget adjusting it when it is on the right hand.

These days, I don t use a watch, have the cell phone for it [;)]

Firefyter-Emtwell, I almost didn t reply to this at first, thinking that something might be wrong with me.  My watch sits on my left wrist also.   After seeing that there really seems to be no hard and fast rule about this, I feel more comfortable about chiming in.  My left-handed DD wears hers on her right wrist.   So, it seems like it has more to do withconvenience.
However, on the button thing, it wasn t women s maids that needed the buttons on a certain side, it was men s valets and dressers that made it necessary to have the buttons on men s clothing in a location that made it easier to get their master ready for dinner, and the sword.

Firefyter-EmtI was always told that right hand people wear their watches on left wrist and left handed people wear on their right to keep from banging the watch.

Do ambidexterous (spelling????[&:]) people wear 2 watches?  I m ambi.......[&:] and growing up, I d switch back and forth.

 birolFrom an internet search...

Why are womens  shirts buttoned differently from mens  shirts?

Mens  shirts have the buttons on the right hand lapel, and the buttonholes on the left hand side.  When a man buttons up a shirt, he pushes the buttons through the left hand lapel, and the end result is that the right hand lapel rests closer to his chest than the left hand does.  In the old days, this was to allow a gentleman to draw a sword without catching his jacket lapel (since the sword scabbard was carried on the left).

Women s shirts button up in a mirror fashion, ie buttons on left, holes on right, and right hand side outermost.  This was so that women could breastfeed infants more easily, holding the infant in their right arm against their chest, inside their jacket or outer wrap.

Firefyter-Emtwatches on non-dominant hand so as not to interfere with the dominant hand s ability to perform tasks.

women made womens clothes so the buttons are on the RIGHT side and menz are on the wrong side....nuff said

birolAre you guys keeping this thread going so I can make posts ?  It is the sword, believe me. They needed to put on their shields sometime while fightitg, and most people use their right hands, so the sword is int the right hand, which hand is free ? left, so buttons were sown accordingly so that left hand could do or undo them.

birolmost outfits where tied together, or as for the rich, where literally sewn on...and buttons really wheren t available until much later in history, when the sword was was losing favor as the weapon of choice.

buttons at first where more a decoration then an actual utensil.

birolBut, when you breastfeed, you have to switch breasts, so if you were going out for the day, you would need the buttons the other way eventually.

Here s the reason I was given as a child.  Women s buttons were on in mirror, so that when they helped their husbands and their sons dress it was easier for them to button the guys shirts  Lord knows where mom came up with that one, cause at this point, any of my children that can t dress themselves, I don t buy shirts with buttons for, and the ones that can dress themselves, including the husband, had darn sure better handle it themselves! I have enough to do getting myself and the ones that can t dress themselves ready.
