Can I discard(read save) the foam matresses in the PU and use the air beds I have ? It was very comfortable when we used them in the tent. Is this something most people do or recommend or is this a stupid question ?
birolYes you can use the air beds. Many people use air mattresses when camping. In colder months the air mattress will be colder than the mattress that came with the PU. The air in the mattress will not retain heat like the regular mattress.
birolWell, we won t be camping much in the colder months as cold for us means COLD.
Thanks :)

Yes, use the mattresses - many folks do. We used air mattresses in the Coleman Utah and now use them in the hybrid. Much more comfortable, and much less weight. On cold winter nights used a blanket as a sheet and then an electric blanket over us. Warm! [:)]

Sounds good, DW will love the idea of electric blankets and get it all for herself, I just know it [;)]
birolalso you can put a wool blanket and then a mattress cover under your fitted sheet...this will trap the cold in the airmattress and the heat from your bodies will stay with you.
birolBirol, those mattress that I gave you have been used in my Pop-up on several occassions!!! They work great, the big one fits perfectly on a full size bed too!
birolBirol,
I place airbeds on top of the small foam things they call mattresses. The foam protects airbeds from punctures.

Good idea ! Thanks for letting me into the secrets of succesfull camping. I love learning from others experiences.
birolWe use an air mattress on top of the PU mattress. We had one from our tent camping days and loved it so we just moved it into the PU. It does not have to be removed when we pop-down but we do have to remake the bed from scratch.
birolFirst we had the egg crate on top of matteress. Then we got a air mattress. Now we have them layered from bottom to top like this. Orgnial mattress, air bed, egg crate. I like the egg crate on top of the air bed. It keeps me from sleeping on plastic and sweating (only down fall of air bed for us).
birolWhat does the egg crate achieve ? Don t they poke you ???? Or do you crush them ?
birolBirol they are wavy foam, they are soft.
birolWe have used the Coleman airbeds with no luck. They don t last a single trip with Natasha jumping on the bed.
Last year we started using egg crate fom on too of the stock Coleman matress with thin self inflating matresses on the bottom.
Well, this year I decided to try an AeroBed.
I picked up an [link=http://www.comfortchannel.com/prod.itml/icOid/38]" AeroBed Sport" [/link] at Sears. It has held up very well to Natasha. Additionally I like the battery powered inflator on the Sport model. The length of the AeroBed is the exact width of the Coleman bunk, so you sleep with your head to the side.. As we have a King bunk, there is about 10" that is not covered by the AeroBed, but this gives Natasha a spot to jump up to on the bunk.
birolThanks for the feedback all ...... We will definitely use the airbeds in our future PU as I found them to be evry comfortable.
birolbirol, there is an excellent thread about this subject under the poll forum:

Thanks, looks like there are differing opinions favoring other stuff. Will keep the alternatives in mind [;)]
birolThe ones I gave you don t leak!!! [;)][;)][;)]
All you can do is try them. And by the way, I too used them ON TOP of the foam mattress things, just in case they ever did leak, then I d still have SOMETHING underneath of me!!! [:D]
Last thing I want to do is wake up and find myself sleeping on just the wood, ouch!!! [: (]
Gone-Campingyeah they did not leak. DD s leaked little bit, or we had it not inflated properly and we fixed that quickly while talking with gr8grandpa ! I love that electric pump, didn t have to use the manual one at all !

That was not nice. [:o] You should not let DD have a bed that leaks. [;)]

HA ! You think I let her Sleep on that ? The first night she jumped into my Double air bed (without asking me first of course, she still thinks she is 4 or 5 sometimes [:)]) . Second night her bed was fully inflated !!!
