Title: Pie Irons
Post by: Hopegirl on Sep 28, 2003, 07:05 PM
I tried to post this but it didn t come up. For those of you who have the pie, hamburger, waffle irons do you really use them often? I want to get them but I don t want to invest in the $$ for them if you only tend to use them once or twice and then they get dusty.

HopegirlWe have a pie iron that gets used a lot. We use it to make pizzas, grilled cheese sandwiches, and of course pie! We go out and but cherry pie filling or blueberry pie filling and use that. Yummmmmm[8D]

HopegirlWe have just been using bread for our dough. We may try those Pillsbury pie dough sheets some time to see how that works.

Viking99We always butter the bread also -- the part that is against the pie iron--makes it toasty and non-stick[:)]

HopegirlDon t forget a box of Jiffy cornbread mix. Works great in pie irons, for individual corn breads.

HopegirlI posted about my pie irons in the Product Review section of PUT.  The PUT ones are much heavier duty than the Wal-Mart type.  We used them the first time last week during vacation and loved them.  They were a big hit.  Just used regular white bread and butter, but the second night I sprinkled cinnamon sugar on the butter.  Yum!  The cookbook that PUT sells with them is full of ideas for full meals, too.

HopegirlI have both the cast iron (Like the ones PUT sells) and one that is cast aluminum, bought at Walmart.

Invest in the cast iron, they are heavier, and cook much better. PUT s prices are good as includes shipping. I paid $19.99 plus tax, in a campground for my last one.

HopegirlWe finally bought a portable fire pit to use here at the house.  One of the main reasons for doing so was to be able to use the pie irons more frequently as well as being able to use our 20"  fry pan.  We have several of the cast aluminum pie irons.  After a couple of them have broken --others using them & forcing the handles together which broke the tip of the hook off...eliminating the " hinging"  capabilities-- & the couple I melted in the fire pit[:o][&:], we will start investing into the cast iron pie irons.  Looks like I know what I m getting DH for Christmas![;)][8D]

 Peace be with you all.

HopegirlWe have the same ones in the PUT store, although we bought ours before PUT sold them.

Definitely invest in the cast iron. I ve heard stories of the aluminum ones melting. Remember that you ll wantto season the cast iron before youuse them for the first time.

We have four and use them for sandwiches and desserts.  You can really get creative with your sandwiches, putting in almost anything you can think of (we like cheese, ham, tomatos, hot mustard, avocado and onion).  If you use the pie dough, you can make little meat (pre-cooked hamburger or chicken)and veggie pasties.  Now we mostly use the buttered bread method but we have also tried the Pillsbury pie dough and croissant dough too.  Both are yummy, but the buttered bread is a bit easier and less fuss.  One of our favorite desserts is pudgie buddies, which is buttered bread, marshmallows, peanut butter and chocolate. [:)]

Oh, Lori, you do have a wild side, don t you?!?  That s an odd way to make pasties, but if that s what Dave likes, well, who am I to judge.  [;)]  I think what you wanted to make was pastries.[:D]

HopegirlBTW if you get the urge and there s no campfire around the pie irons work just as well on your gas grill. IMHO they actually work better as you ve get a constant source of heat and after the first one you ve got the time down pat.

 LOL! [:D]

Nope, it really is pasties (pronounced with a short " a" , like in apple).  (Thanks for backing me up here vjm!)  You can even ask 6Quigs.  I think he s from the UK and would know what I m taking about.  Cottonwooder would too.  Cornish pasties are very yummy!

I used to be married to an Englishman, and we were together for a very long time, so I picked up a bit of his accent (people thought I was English) and a lot of his manners of speech and became very good at " taking the mickey"  out of him with them.  I still have a lot of British-isms peppered throughout my speech because some of the phrases they use are so much more colorful and descriptive at conveying what I m trying to say.  I forget that most people don t know what I m talking about--but that s true even when I m not speaking Brit!  [;)]

Now, naughty girl--shame on you!!![:D][;)][8D]  (and just you never-no-mind about my wild side--those stories ll give you grey hair! [:o])

HopegirlHey, we know all about pasties!  My " x" [:@] had family from the Copper mine area in the U.P. of Michigan.  Pasties are great comfort food during our cold winter months.  I ll have to try them in the pie irons, soon.

And, yes, it is pronounced like " pasta"   with the " ee"  sound at the end instead of an " ah"  sound.

If you pronounce it like " paste - tee" ...these are non-edible " decorations" .  Well, maybe some are edible, but I don t want to about them[:o].

 Peace be with you all.

HopegirlThe pie irons give you another option for cooking.  We don t use them all the time but we do get them out on most trips.  I wrap them in heavy duty foil for storage in the PU.  That way they don t make a mess in the PU.
