Title: I m camping in the rain, just camping in the rain
Post by: CajunCamper on Sep 28, 2003, 07:05 PM
Some of you may think I m nuts, but rarely do we cancel a camping trip due to rain unless the forecast is for dangerous thunderstorms and such. But for just your average rainy days even if it s constant all day, we move forward with our camping trip. The forest has a different look, feel, sound and smell to it on rainy days, there are fewer people in the campground so you can pick just about any site you want. With our awning, we can sit ouside without the fear of getting wet, and when we go hiking or fishing, we have our rain gear that keeps us dry. If you want to take an afternoon nap, buddy, rainy days are made for that. We bring our tv and vcr and we love to get real cozy in the pop-up and watch movies and doze. Once you learn to relax and realize that your going to get wet and say that s okay then you can really have a wonderful camping trip. It also increases the number of days you can spend camping during the year and to me that s what s it s all about.

CajunCamperI can agree with all you said.  The only thing that slows me down is that I hate to have to worry about wet tenting at the end of the trip.  This is one of the main reasons we will be moving up to a small " 5 er"  in the next year or so.

 CajunCamperYep,

    Feel about the same.

Especially during the fall months, when the woods take on a  whole different look of their own.

I will sit under the awning, and just keep the ol  fire going at night till I turn in for the evening.

Come to think of it, I have never cancelled a trip because of rain, even when we were tent campers. Dare to say that after over 300 + camping trips in my life time, never had a bad trip because of rain.

But I have to admit, packing up the ol  camper is not as much fun as the dry days.

CajunCamperWe almost always have rain.  We don t cancel either.  If it was going to be really bad like a hurricane we would cancel.

CajunCamperWe have done at least 7 trips this year so far and it has rained everytime.  It has been anywhere from just overnight to maybe a little in AM to the whole weekend raining.  We never cancelled or even considered.

CajunCamperWe began camping in the rain and until the last couple of trips, it has rained every single time.  We ve had 18 trips this year so that s a lot of rain.  We have mastered the art of set-up and take down and can do it without getting anything but ourselves wet.  I love the rain.  It is sooooo much cooler to hike when it s wet.  We are lucky enough to keep the P/U in our garage so if she comes home wet and we can t open her up outside, we just raise the top enough to pull the canvas out, dry it off with towels, stuff it back in, close her down and she is all ready for her next outing.  I admit I don t like to leave the top partially raised, even in the garage, because you don t know what kind of visitors you might get in the door opening.
 Let  er pour![:D]

CajunCamperWell, I thought I would have some rainy stories to add here.  Forecast for the whole week-end was no less than 50% chance of rain.  IT DID NOT RAIN!!!!  Evidently that forecast scared more than a few wimpy campers off, as the state park was not full.  Made for a really peaceful camping week-end.  Just took it easy and relaxed.

CajunCamperJan I am jealous.  It called for rain here and did it ever rain.  We did have a good evening on Saturday and Sunday was a great day.  Sunny, blue skies and only around 70 degrees out.[:)]

CajunCamperWell, we had rain on and off all weekend.  Took a road to trip check out some CG s in KY, but other than that, we stayed home (DH had to work his P/T job[:@]).

Would have loved to have camped, nice temps.

CajunCamperWe were in Southern MD, Friday and Saturday were oppressive, Saturday night came up such a storm that I had to bring the 2 powerchills in. Glad I had a plastic table cloth over the camper table. Had to roll up the awning due to wind (I have a TT awning on the Bantam). The sterlite drawers got water in them, lost a box of spagetti and some coffee filters. Left the camping kitchens at home...less is more weekend with Papa Johns, MCeeDees, Burger King, Roy Rogers, Ruby Tuesdays, etc...all a quick drive.

we did take the Windstar instead of the Corolla. Raymond brought back the Jayco that the step-daughter and family borrowed in June and did not return...changing room was still in her carport and they lost the 32 cup coffee maker/hot water heater, that Kim decided that they did not need. Probably was on the carport too and someone walked off with it thinking they did not want it.
Note to self: Do not offer or lend anything to them again since they do not return things and then loose other things...Better yet do not lend out anything or leave anything laying so sil can claim for his own (like tools from my tool box Jeffrey used to fix his bike at RJ Ranch...Kim collected all the tools and told us they were his, that I had borrowed his stuff)

CajunCamperWell....  I did cancel this weekend.  Hated to do it.  The boys had two days of marching band to deal with, so they were not going to be going with us.  And the girls were starting to complain that it would not be any fun without the boys.  When it started to pour on Thursday, I decided that we would wait to see.  I just do not want to get stuck setting up in the rain.  Personally, I don t mind being out when it is wet.  But we are also doing a lot of work on the inside of our house, so I was able to get a lot of work done and off the list.  Here in Ohio it rained all weekend.  We probably got 4 inches or more.  So... I made my choice and I will look forward to a nice dry fall weekend later on.

CajunCamperI think we finally shook the jynx! Usually, when ACER and myself get together for a group camping trip, the one thing you could always count on was rain!!! Well, we just did 3 days and 3 nights in Cape Hatteras and didn t get a drop! Sunshine all weekend. Perhaps selling the PU and getting that hybrid took care of the jynx that started back when ACER first bought the RIO....

CajunCamperThis weekend is going to be beautiful and would love to camp.  However, I have to work a 2 day auction of anitques etc..; also with DH STILL out of work, funds are getting very tight.

Last night a local TV station had our weather stats for the summer.

June had 19 days of rain
July had 25 days of rain
August had 22 days of rain

7 weekends of the summer had rain and 2 weekend were a complete washout

 only 2 weekends were fantastic

However, the good news was we only had 5 days with temps over 90 compared to our normal of 19 days

CajunCamperWe ve cancelled due to water INSIDE the camper, never outside.  As a matter of fact, we probably wouldn t know what to do if it DIDN T rain when we were camping!!!   We re 5 for 5 so far this year and the 6th trip was cancelled due to a water leak in the kitchen that made the counter top swell into a gondola shape!  Particle board and water don t play well together!!!
And there was that absolutely gorgeous lavatory gooseneck sink set we bought that was just the thinnest hair too high to slide the bed over.  OOPS.  It lasted in its bent condition for one trip but gave up the ghost on the next necessitating a campground replacement with the boring typical sink set we had brought along " just in case."

The camper s still popped up drying from our last trip.  I m considering christening it " The Ark."

 CajunCamperHi CajunCamper,

DW and I love it when it rains while we re camping. We re like you, we never cancel a camping trip unless there are dangerous storms in the forecast. You are so correct, the forest and campgrounds have a totally different feel when there is rain. We love staying in the camper, playing game, reading or just snoozing.

The only time we really don t like the rain is when we re " popping down."  The rain ends up creating more work for us when we get home since we have to open up the camper once again.

On all of our camping trips we hope for at least a couple of days of rain, it makes for a much more interesting camping trip.
