Over the years we have enjoyed every type of camping you can imagine in all sorts of conditions. But now our most preferred type of camping would be in our pop-up in a state park, national forest or national park. Even so, we continue to take our tent along with us on every camping trip just in case. On a recent week long trip to North Carolina we set up camp at Standing Indian campground in the Nantahala National Forest using our pop-up as a base camp while taking a two night backpacking trip on the AT. When we came back to the comforts of the pop-up it was like staying at the PLaza Hotel. Since we do this I was wondering if anyone else ever did this. If you don t, I might recommend it to you, it s a great way to enjoy the outdoors.

We do some backpacking,and also camp in our Starcraft Pop Up.The excitement, rest and fun of camping in the pop up+the adventure & challange of backpacking + the luxury & relaxation of returning to the trailer.What a mix ! The tension and interplay of experiences like those make life really special.Maybe something to do with enhanced definition of those experiences,and perception of change in a win-win situation.

CajunCamperThat sounds pretty neat, but I think DGF would get a little upset lugging the stove, lantern, dining fly, cooler, pots-n-pans, dishes and clothing (I m certainly not going to lug that stuff down the trail) [;)]
CajunCamperWe do a lot of hiking when we camp too Cajun but don t backpack. Do you have any problems not occupying your site at night? Some of our SP insist that the site be occupied each and every night.
CajunCamperWe ve done it in the past, but not for a while now. I m hoping that next summer will be different tho. There s a lake we love to camp and fish at, and the road in is very rugged. We ve heard that a major bridge on that road has collapsed or been taken out by the MNR, and the only way to get into that lake now is to portage the river. Some say it can be crossed with a good ATV, so we re thinking we might try that. If so, we ll set up camp on one side of the river and take gear across to stay for a few days with us. (alot of this depends on my health, but I have set some goals for myself.) DH missed his fishing trip this past spring, so I want to make sure he gets to go next time.

CajunCamperNever used the PopUp as a base camp, but there s nothing like backpacking and really getting away from it all!! I do love tent camping too but we also love to use primative cabins owned by our trail club at least once a year for normally about 8 - 10 days. You have to backpack everything in (they re mostly in the Shenandoah mountain area). You get your water from a spring and filter it, you have an outhouse. You have a fireplace and cook either on that or the backpacking stove you brought in. You filter water everyday, you cut wood for your fires....and it s always the most relaxing and enjoyable vacation ever. Nothing like getting away from it all!
CajunCamperslowpez, we ve never had a problem. We have a state park here in Louisiana that has a nine mile trail around the lake with designated primitive campsites situated around the lake and to camp there you need to pay a backcountry camping fee of $1.00 per night. We always pay for our site for the pop-up and our backcountry site at check-in and nobody has ever said a thing. I m sure each park has their own set of rules.
