Title: Thoughts on the new board
Post by: Tim5055 on Sep 28, 2003, 07:05 PM
Well, I was looking at the old forums and ran across this thread:

 [link=http://www.popuptimes.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=25666]STAYING? IDEAS FOR NEW BOARD?[/link]

So we have been here for a while, what do you think??

Comfortable with the new site?  Thisnk things should be added or removed?

I for one am comfortable that the rating systems are gone.  At first I thought I would like to see them stay, but now I know other people post more than I do.

I miss the active topics feature.  I used to let that run all day refreshing every five minutes or so.  It allowed me to keep up on what was happening whenever I walked up to the computer.

tim5055I think the PUT boys  did a fine job on the new board.[:D]
It is easy to maneuver around in and visually pleasing- simple. Some boards I ve seen are complicated at first glance and are visually hard to see and figure out. This does not make for a relaxing stay, but our board is very nice indeed!
Keep up the good work guys. I am getting my moneys worth already. [;)]

tim5055Yep, I like it! I feel that I m getting my money s worth. Especially when I get those discounts from the camp store! Keep up the great work!

tim5055I would like to have seen the " Member since"  date go back to the date we joined this forum in years past, it s not entirely accurate giving us all the date the new forum opened, after all, this is a continuation of the old one under a new format. The old ratings were nothing more than canon fodder used by many to gain additional icons by posting whatever they could post, glad they are gone too...

tim5055Yeah, I like the new board, but have to echo Tim about the active topics problem.  I last looked at the forum this morning before going to work. When I came home tonight, I refreshed the " posts since last visit"  button and get only the last 50 posts. Problem is, everything posted from 7:30 AM to about 3:30 PM  today is missing, because there was more than 50 posts added to the board today. Same thing happens using the " today s posts"  link... only the last 50 posts show up.

The only other problem is the ability to change the " Title"  of each post while still keeping it in the same thread. That makes it very hard to follow what is being posted to where. If the threads were displayed in an " outline"  form, this would work. But since they are not, you can t tell if a post concerns a thread you are following, or an entirely new thread. Maybe disable this option?

tim5055I only wish that we could smileys or small images from other sites like some other boards that I subscribe to do. Man, this board would rock! [:D]I know band width would be a problem and people with dial-up connections would have problems with pages loading slowly.[:(]

tim5055What we like most about the new board are the PEOPLE!  Everyone is so nice, and it seems the overall " feel"  of the board is friendlier than the old.

 tim5055May I?

 1.  I agree on the active topics situation and am working on that one.
 2.  As for the member since date, this is the third board PUT has used.
I did not have the bandwidth to get in to the religion of how far back to go.
Some folks thought just to the beginning of snitz.  Others thought back to
Cool Boards.  I felt better to just start fresh.
 3.  The linking of smilies causes performance problems and the potential for
very messy messages, with so many images it can get confusing. We hoped
to keep things as neat and tidy as possible for easy reading.

 Please keep the ideas coming.

 Steve

tim5055Not having a hard time w/the board in general - just kinda miss the way the name of the topic would " change colors" , meaning that I already read that particular topic; like on the old Snitz board.

tim5055Please keep it neat and tidy (no long-loading images)!  I dial in from home on occasion and although we live in an all-yuppie suburb of Chicago, my side of town STILL CAN T GET HIGH SPEED INTERNET CONNECTIONS!  The telecoms don t want to " build the infrastructure"  (until their share price increases, I ll bet).  So we are stuck (unless we build a 20  antenna on the roof to point to the Sears Tower where the Sprint dish is located -- and believe me the yuppie subdivisions are making up rules and convenants about that one!).

I already got my membership investment back in the discount on my next year s subscription and my savings on our new Teepee!  Yippee!!

tim5055While I miss the nice emoticons we used to have at snitz, and the update feature was helpful, I rejoice to see the ratings system GONE FOREVER!  (It was a cute idea, but it really got out of hand)

And I absolutely LOVE the spirit of the new board.  Everytime I log on, it is a joy to be here visiting with such wonderful  people, to read their camping accomplishments, their  worries, their joys, and their  foolishness (hmmm, I plead " guilty"  to plenty of the latter[;)])

This board is worth every penny and I am grateful to be here with the rest of you--I cannot imagine my life without you and this place where we can gather together to share our love of the outdoors and our affection for each other!!

tim5055A search engine built into the board would be handy.

I have enjoyed communicating with members and have learned a lot.

Upper right hand corner of the screen is the search button.  It works very well[;)]

tim5055I hate to be the first one to complain but I really liked the other form better. Popupexplorer is set up like we use to be. To me it was so much easier to read and it was nicer to my eyes. We probally can do more stuff with it but I m a simple person. RV2info, is set up the same as this forum is now and I didn t like it either.

I still enjoy reading everyone s posts and I m glad we re still here[:)]

tim5055Steve.. I would like to see the " member since"   brought back.. Heck, just go back to the old bord (and yes. I was a member of the " cool bord era" )  But I would really like to see that back.. [>:]

tim5055I like the new board fine.  The only thing I think would be a nice change, would be to replace those goofy muffins with a different, more camping related icon.....like maybe a little pop-up or a campfire (and only one or two for everybody)[:D].  I just really don t care for the muffins...they just don t " fit."

My only other regret is that I don t get to come here and visit this board quite as much as I would like.....I m so busy[:@].  I guess I m going to just have to start setting time aside during the week to do just this[:)]......but then.....thats my problem....not the board s LOL[;)]

tim5055I would really like to see the image tag open for use.  I know it can be an issue but sure does add a level of dynamics that I like.  The Avalanche board allows them, you can post the local server or your own.  I think posing to the server could drive up costs, but if we have a site it would be nice to post pictures of what we are discussing sometimes.  Same for the Avatars, I dunno things just seem so sanitized.  I do miss the PU icons too.  But as it was said I like the spirit of the board so the rest would only be more icing on the cake so to speak.

tim5055The new board seems to be working quite well, the only feature that I miss is the active topics button. It was always nice to keep up with the latest posts, and possibly replies to a topic that you were involved in....

tim5055Thing I really miss is being able to make my daily (twice, three times, more) visit to the forum and being able to see which threads I have already visited.  Nothing there, as far as I can see, which tells me what I have read - the links don t change colors or nuttin!  Hey, folks, I m chronologically challenged and have CRS and thus spend a lot of time clicking on a subject and then finding I ve already been there and done that.  Also notice that PUExp thread links do[/b] change.

WayfarerWayfarer, when I log onto PUT there are little green arrows pointing at little yellow pieces of paper for the threads that are new since my last visit.

I like how fast this board is, when I do visit the other boards the speed is very noticable.  There are tonnes of pros and cons however PUT is definately my favourite place on the net.[:)]
