Title: Latest Mod - Accumulator Tank
Post by: Tim5055 on Nov 22, 2003, 04:54 PM
Well, it may seem like an unusual time of the year to be modifying the old pop up, but remember I'm less than two weeks from a visit to Mickey :Y

Well - for the longest time I have hated the noise the water pump makes.

The noise actually comes from a combination of factors:
The first two are fairly easy to correct, make sure the water lines are properly secured and mount the pump using some cushioning material between it and the mounting surface.  As a twist on this, many pop ups are manufactured with  water lines  made of "PEX".   These stiff water lines add to the noise as they can tend to slap around when the pump is running.  Make sure all of the lines are secure and don't move around a lot

Accumulators tanks reduce pump cycling and eliminate pulsations and water hammer in the pop up water system.  It is basically a pressurized two part tank with a flexible bladder in the middle.  Pressurized air is on one side and the water is on the other.  When you turn on a faucet, the pressurized water form the tank is used first, then the pump turns on to maintain the pressure in your water system.  The accumulator tank "cushions" the pulsation of your water pump.

After installing this tank, my pump runs almost silent.

Take a look here (http://www.title-3.com/AccumTank.htm)

Nice mod Tim and it doesn't sound that hard to do.  One question about the accumulator tank.  Do you have to remove it from the water system when you winterize the trailer with antifreeze?

One more question.  Have you had any problems with your water tank level indicator? :)

I don't know about this one yet.  I'm still looking into it

None so far.  It still works well with no leaks

This is very helpful information.  For those who don't know, tim has the most thorough website of camping modification information that I have seen so far.

Sweet, looks like I have my next mod. That constant pump cycling drives me nuts also. Thanks again Tim.

I must warn you, it only delays the pump turning on by seconds (less than a minute), but it quiets it down so much you don't hear it running.

Thanks Tim. We just bought the TT and the included Shurflo pump was its typical noisy self. I planned on changing the hoses in the Spring, but now I may just add the accumulator instead. They mounted it on a piece of carpeting but I already have a rubber replacement for it.

Why can't we just buy something & not need to do anything to it???

Al,

If you have room to spare in the TT they make a 2 gallon accumulator tank rather than the small 24 oz one.  It would delay the need for the pump to turn on to a more noticeable point.  But the 24 oz one is around $36 while the 2 gallon is about $200

I got mine from the Pop Up Times Store.  While t's not listed as a regular item, Dave special ordered it for me.

If you need parts, give him a call even if you don't see it in the store.  They usually can get most parts.

You know Tim's been trying to figure out how to use that new smiley icon!   He probably planned his trip just so he could use it! ;)
