Born here in West Michigan, and have lived here all my life.   In fact, I'm only about 5 minutes away from the neighborhood where I started kindergarten and finished high school all in the same school building.   I've often wondered what it would be like to live someplace else, but then we go on a vacation and I realise after just a short time that I miss this part of the country.   I guess I'll never go away from here.

I was born in Worcester Mass, and lived in the Worcester County area for the first 21 years of my life. My parents and their parents were all from Spencer Mass, but my parents moved around alot, lived in Spencer, E. Brookfield, Grafton, Leominster, Sutton, and Liecester.

U.S. Navy sent me to San Diego for a year, then on to Norfolk Va. I've lived here in Virginia pretty much since 1976, I did return to Sutton Mass for a couple years in the early 80's, and back to Spencer for 2 years in the late 80's, pretty much the last 25+ years here in the Norfolk/Va Beach/Chesapeake/Portsmouth area.

One day I hope to return to Mass or somewhere in New England for "Semi-Retirement"  in the summers, but gotta keep working right now!

When I was born my parents lived in San Leandro, California (in the San Francisco Bay Area) but my Mother was forced to have me in Oakland, CA (still in the bay Area) because her Doctor was an Osteopath and was arguing with the San Francisco Hospital System.  They didn't want an Osteopath delivering babies in San Francisco so she had to go to an Oakland Hospital.  Anyway, when I was about 2 my parents decided to move back to my Mother's home town of Billings, Montana because she wanted to start a Tupperware Dealership.  My sister was born in Billings during that time.   When I was 4 my parents moved back to Sacramento, CA where I still live.  Actually we live in North Highlands, CA which is the outskirts of Sacramento.

Very interesting thread.. Its nice to know just how well traveled people are..

I was born in Lodi California and lived there for a short time (About a year) then it was off to the midwest and Missouri for a year or so (lived with my Grandmother), then up to Chicago for a couple.. then it was out to Rockford, Il, before hitting the Country and Farms..

Lived in a small farm area outside of Kirkland, Il for a bunch of years, then back to Rockford for the forming years (Middle School).  After learning all the bad city habits, it was back to the farm country of Kirkland, Il. to finish up High School and hang around for a few years after.  Moved to Linden, NJ when I was 21 years old and never looked back.  It was 4 years of NJ, then off to Austin, Texas for the big promotion and salary increase.  Decided to take a transfer to Kansas City, MO and found out that was the worse choice I could have done.  Ended up move to Florida, where things got better.  Lived there for a couple of years, met my Wife, moved to Arlington, Texas, back to Florida, then up to North Carolina where I am content to stay forever and ever!!

Whew.. its seems alot more when its written down..

I'm a Virginian born and bred! I'm just a little ol' homebody hillbilly compared to many of you!

I was born in the bustling metropolis of Appalachia, in the far southwestern corner of Virginia. (Yes, there really is a town named Appalachia, not just the "poverty pocket".) My family lived in Big Stone Gap, but it didn't have a hospital at the time and Appalachia did, so I was born in Appalachia (2 miles away) instead of BSG.

Grew up in BSG, then headed out to Williamsburg to attend college (William & Mary). After college, I moved to Winchester in the northern tip of VA. Taught school there for four years. Decided that maybe I really didn't want to be a schoolteacher as much as I had thought I did! So I quit teaching, and moved back home to Big Stone Gap to consider other options.

That was in 1976. Three apartments, one house, and five jobs later, I'm still here!

(BTW, for the record, the town of Appalachia is pronounced "apple-at-cha", not "apple-lay-sha" like the poverty region.  ;) )

And if any of you have read Adriana Trigiani's best-selling novel "Big Stone Gap", yes, it's about my hometown! Adri grew up here and her family still lives here. A lot of the places in the books are real, and many of the characters are based on real people.

I know where Franklin is.  We spent many happy hours there.  I loved what they do for Christmas.  Actually planned on building a house there but decided to move back to Michigan.  Now sometimes I wish I had built that house.  Can camp most of the year, a bit cool in the winter but not like here in Michigan.

QuoteI have relatives that live in a teeny tiny town called Keokee, not to far from Big Stone Gap. I love that area. Very beuatiful place.

Wow, Starcraft Dad! Keokee??? I'm always amazed when people have heard of Big Stone Gap, let alone someplace like Keokee.

Keokee and most of the other tiny little towns around Appalachia are really old mining camps, or "coal camps". Since this is coal mining country, all the miners and their families used to live in "the camps". That way, the men could walk to work. Everyone bought all their groceries at the "company store"--usually with scrip. The miners didn't get paid in money, they got paid in scrip. Scrip was like vouchers that could be used at the company store. (The old song "16 Tons" by Tennessee Ernie Ford had the line, "St. Peter don't you call me, 'cause I can't go. I owe my soul to the company store.") If the miners were short of funds between paydays, the company store would extend credit...so some of the miners spent years trying to pay off what they owed the company store.

The camps were usually named after the mine they were closest to. My mother grew in a coal camp in the same area named Derby--her dad was chief electrician at the Derby mine. She said she remembered how they would blow a whistle every morning to let the men know it was time to go to work. My dad worked in the mines for several years, but got out after he lost the fingers on his right hand in a mining accident. I never knew my maternal grandfather--he was killed in a mining accident in 1944--way before I was born.

I never lived in the coal camps. My dad had been out of the mines for several years, and my parents had moved to Big Stone Gap before I was born. But I've heard my mom and dad talk about living in the camps. Even though the houses and land are no longer owned by the coal company and many of the mines are closed, people in the area still refer to places like Keokee and Derby as "the camps."

I worked at (not in) a coal mine for almost 17 years. I started out as a supply clerk, then moved over to the mine office to help the superintendent with all the paper work. It was the same coal company that my dad and both my grandfathers worked for.

The one thing I found interesting about Keokee is that it is basically a bend in the road with one store and gas pumps.  My aunt lived right across the road from it next to a church.  It has been a long time since I have been there.  She is gone now but I still have some cousins that live there.  I'm hoping to be able to get there this year.  I loved coming to Big Stone Gap. It's such a wounderful town nestled in the hills.  I remember one time we went to a fair in Pennington(sp) Gap.  They had a double ferris wheel on top of a mountain. As I can remember, it seemed you could see for miles up there.  Scared the heck out of me.  I thought the thing was going to fall down the hill.  I was not used to the mountains and can remember the waterfalls that fell down the cliffs next to the roads.  My cousin told me that the water didn't always flow because it was water from the mines.  When the mines were closed the water wasen't there.  Maybe if we come down that way this year, with your permission I could look you up.  But I have a son graduating this year so it may be late in the summer if we can.

This is an interesting thread.   Born and raised in a little (not so little anymore) town called Cazenovia about 20 miles east of Syracuse in upstate NY.  Still have a sis and her kids in Brewerton which is north of Syracuse, and another sis and her hubbie in Troy, NY.  Dad retired to Boulder CO so he and his GF can ski all winter..and take that big ole rv out during the summer.  Spent 18 weeks in Anniston Alabama at Ft McCullen for boot camp and at the MP academy for the reserves, like 14 weeks at Lackland AFB for the AF (didn't have to do af boot camp cause I had gone thru a real one for the army), about 4 weeks at Ft Dix for more training for the AF...then off to merry ole England for 3 years (RAF Mildenhall).  Loved it there.  Want to go back.  Only had 3 real American friends..the rest were British.  We hung out with a British motorcycle club loosely based out of Peterborough.  Miss those people terribly...good bunch of folks.  Spent very little time on base when I was off cause there was to much to see or do (love visiting historical sites and ruins).  Then it was off to N. California for a year at Beale AFB.  Didn't care for California that much...sorry you Californians, just wasn't for me, no offense meant.  Had a friend from HS who had moved to KC, and when I was getting ready to get out of the service...took some leave to check out the area..and have been here ever since.  Moved from MO to the KS side, and south a lil, but about the only times I think about moving back to Upstate NY is during X-mas becuase it just doesn't feel the same due to the lack of snow (if any).

Let me know if you head down this way anytime, StarCraft Dad! It's always fun to meet folks "for real" that you've chatted with online.

My first experience with a message board was about 5 1/2 years ago at a NASCAR-related site called Racecomm. The board was very popular and a lot of us were "regulars"--spent hours online posting. It was almost a chat room since the responses were usually so quick! Several of us realized we were going to be at the same NASCAR event at the same time, so we decided to get together. It was a lot of fun. After that we'd plan "Racecomm reunions" every time several of us were going to the same race. A lot of my "cyber-friends" became real friends. The message board is gone, but some of us still keep in touch, and still try to meet up at the races when we can.

Camperroo... You want a name that's a real mouthful? When I moved back up to Mass in the early 80's, I shared a house with my brother in the town of Webster, on Kill Deer Island Rd. It was a lakefront house on Webster Lake, also known as Lake Chargoggagoggmanchaugagoggchaubunagungamog (yes, that's for real Lee or Andrea should be able to confirm that, and I had to dig out an old "tourist trap" coffee cup to get the spelling right). That's the indian name for the lake, and translate's roughly to "You fish on your side, I fish on my side, and no one fish in the middle"

When I lived in Sutton, I actually lived in a village there called Manchaug which if you look closely, is one of the words inside the big name above!

Yup, I used to live in Webster too as a teen and this whole name was actually painted onto the wall of the enteranceway of my high school!  Quite a challenge to say it correctly, and it's pretty impressive if you can!  When I lived there the lake was in bad shape - dirty from to many speedboats, littering etc.  Dead fish would be washing on shore constantly!  Since then Webster has taken some pride and really cleaned it up, added a big areas for walking and nature hiking, etc.  Of course with it being so nice and pretty they want $20. a car if you'd like to spend the day there and you DON'T live in Webster!  The townspeople got quite possesive of thier re-vamped spot!  Can't totally blame them, and it certainly turns away outsiders!

quoting and the other posting options are not working for me?!

I was born in GWU Hospital in Washington, DC.  This sometimes causes problems with forms I fill out which ask only what state I was born in...DC is not a state -->this really confused the guy who had to fill out our life insurance form.  I was not really impressed with him aside from this "bump" anyway.  It blow me away when he said he had been an insurance salesman for 14 years.  I could have sworn from our encounter he had only been in the business less than 6 months.

Then I lived with my folks & paternal grandmother until I was about 3 y.o.  That is when Ford Mo. Co. offered my dad a really great job.  We lived in various apartments in Dearborn, a rental house in Dearborn, a duplex in Southfield, a house in Livonia (parents had built), then moved a bit farther north, & have lived in the same vacinity of SE metro area of Detroit ever since....except while attending MSU in Lansing.

This topic has been so interesting to read...
Duane was born in Dickinson, North Dakota and moved to CA before he started elementary school.  His family moved right to Anaheim from ND, and that is where he has been ever since, except for 4 years when we bought our first house in Fullerton, CA.  Growing up, his family returned to ND almost every summer for family vacations... in the family station wagon pulling a travel trailer.  (I have heard stories that rival 'National Lampoon's Vacation'!)  He has always said that he likes CA much more than ND.
I was born in Lynwood, CA and lived in Downey, CA until we were married.  Then we moved to an apartment in Anaheim, lived in our first house in Fullerton for 4 years, then moved to our present home in Anaheim that we have lived in for 23+ years!  Someday we would like to move... but where would we move to?  Despite all the traveling we have done all over the U.S., we have never seriously looked at other places to live.  That could be a new reason to travel even more!

Quote from: chasd60Born in 1960 in Frankfurt Germany while my dad was stationed there in the Army.
8-9                                       Richmond, ME (dad went to VietNam)
11                                         Richmond, ME (dad went back to VietNam)

Raymond was one of those that went twice to Viet Nam, his ex and a son live in Germany. Lucky for me that she did not like it here and he cme back with the kids after his divorce.

I was born in Louisville KY
When I was 6 weeks old we moved next door to my grandparents in St. Pete Fla.  I Graduated Mid-term and moved to Southern Indiana at 17. Lived and work between Louisville KY and Sellersburg Indiana.  I met Raymond when I was 30, we moved to Ferdinand Indiana for "Work" (there was none), then headed off to Boston during Spring Break (Dukakis was Governor and MA was going great guns then) to look for Raymond a job, got as far as Wilmingon DE where Raymond got an accounting job with no local address or phone numbers. I went back to Indiana for the kids (both his (he had gotten custody of his children in Germany because of things his ex did )and mine) to finish the school year.  Then moved to Delaware where I have been since 1988.  I do plan on retiring back to St. Pete where I can go camping year round (like we did when I was a kid), but since I am only 48, that will be quite a while.

Raymond was born in Bristow Indiana. Moved to the Detroit MI area during WWII where his mother was one of the "Rosie the riveters" and his father was in Germany fighting the furor. They moved back to Bristow and bought a farm with a farmhouse from the 1850's, no electricity or running water, when full shell shock hit Elvis (yes Raymond's dad's name was Elvis) then he ahd a car accident with brain damage, leaving Raymond the man of the house at a young age. There was no work, Raymond carried milk and eggs to twon on his way to school and brought necessities back to the farm on his way home from school. Spent summers working in the fields at St. Meinrad (AKA Abbey Press, but this was before the presses) and other farms in the area, so he could get clothes for school for him self and his sister. Joined the Army in 1954 ( a year before I was born  ). He was all over the place, TX, Baltimore, Selinas Calif (twice), Ft. Wauchuca (sp??) and viet nam twice. but most of his career was in Germany as his ex is German. After his divorce he stayed around Stutgart working until the German Government took the kids away from his ex, he went to the Ramstein area then came here in 1979 :U
Moved to Tell City Indiana, then back to Bristow a couple of years later, then Moved to Louisville temporarily where we met in 1985, Married in 1986 and the last 17 years have been the same as mine.

Born in beautiful Brooklyn NY.  Moved to NJ when I was a kid.  Went into the USAF and ended up in Montana for four years and lived there for a year after I got out and then moved by to NJ.  Moved to TX 14 years ago when I was transferred.  Best thing that ever happened.  Now I can camp and play golf all year round.

Add another to the native Californian tally.

Born in Los Angeles, moved to OC (Costa Mesa) when I was in 3rd grade. In 6th grade, moved to El Toro (now Lake Forest) and lived there until I graduated from high school (ETHS GO FIGHT WIN!). Went back to LA for college and grad school, then onto Dana Point for 1 year, San Clemente for 7 years, Laguna Beach for 1 year, and now Foothill Ranch, about 6 miles from where I grew up in El Toro. Don't see us moving again.

You may have heard of Foothill Ranch in the news today--it is in the foothills of Orange County (by Irvine and mission Viejo) and home to Whiting Ranch, where yesterday a mountain biker was attacked and another was killed by a mountain lion. Before we adopted my 3 y/o, I used to be a serious mountain biker, and I can't tell you how many times I have ridden in that park, oftentimes alone! I have seen bobcats, skunks, possums, mule deer, raccoons, rattlesnakes, tarantulas, and once, even a mountain lion (from about 100 yds and he was moving away from me) while riding, but never had any bad experiences with the wildlife. I didn't personally know the cyclists who were attacked and killed, but it has really affected me. :(

I was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey as were my children and my grandfather was born there in 1898.  Still live in the area about 20 miles from A.C.
I love living where all my family and friends that I grew up with are.  My husband is also from the area.  It is getting a little crowded but always
something to do.

I was born in Newburgh NY (orange county 60 mi. north of NYC) we moved 2 miles down the road to Town of Montgomery to change school districts about 2 minutes from where American Chopper (love that show BTW) is filmed if anybody watches that.  Just recently Jay and I moved to Ulster County by Kingston NY to a little town named Rifton.  Rents are a lot cheaper up here and it is so nice.  If anybody ever saw The Road to Wellville it was filmed near where we are (Mohonk Mountain House).  We are 15 minutes from a super walmart but I have deer, squirrels, bunnies etc and even a bald eagle that flies over all the time.  When the kids are grown Jay and I plan to retire to the adirondacks where he will open a fixit shop.

Lived in Rhode Island, New York, Connecticut,  before the age of 17. Dad's job kept us moving. He got transferred to Toronto when I was 17. They left again after 3 years, but by that time I was in university and stayed in Canada, and have never regretted that decision. Except when it is -20 and i have to go shovel the !@#$%^& snow. :C

I was born in Pittsburgh, PA when I was 10 my father was going through maybe a midlife crisis and quit his job as a chemist researcher and ventured into the Plastics industry. He and 2 other men bought an old empty brewery and moved us up to Mankato, MN. The business is still there in Mankato, it is now called Atlantis Plastics. That is where I called home. I did attend college in Rensselaer IN for three years and met my ex-husband and moved to Mesa, AZ. I divorced my ex after 2 and half yrs. I stayed in Mesa because I had a good job and raised my son there until marrying my DH in 1998 and moved to Scottsdale, AZ.

DH was born in Palermo, Sicily and moved to Brooklyn NY when he was about 6 was left there in the care of his uncle and aunt until he was 7 and returned to Sicily. The economy and school systems were so bad there he and his mother came back and and bought a dairy farm in Goshen NY where he graduated HS and then went onto community college then to NYU in Utica. He then returned to the farm and his parents decided to move to Islip on Long Island, NY. By then DH was working for GE in Connecticut and took a transfer to Charleston SC where he lived for a couple of yrs then he was transfered to Scottland. He lived there for 1 and half years. Then onto Virginia Beach, VA and back to SC. His parents in the mean time decided they would like to retire in AZ but not sure where. DH helped them choose and purchased them the home in Scottsdale. DH's father took on a massive heart attack in 1996 and his mother could not take care of him. So DH left his job in SC and moved to AZ to take care of his father until he died. He had promised his father he would take care of his mother. We met 1 and half years later on a blind date and I am sure glad we did. And for now this is where we call home.
