Title: Virus scan detects a virus on New Scam Thread!
Post by: MommaMia on Jan 26, 2004, 09:30 AM
When I clicked the thread to view, a virus scan virus detection was recieved! It is an Exploit URLSpoof.gen virus.  It's stored in  temporary files as "SHOWTITLE Thread [1]"  Virus scan could not delete it.  I had to manually delete from my temporary files.

Cindy, the virus might have come in on something else and was lying resident in your computer.  This is just a guess, anyway, or else my virus scan didn't pick it up.

Hmmm.... don't think so.  Each and every time I open that thread the same virus gets detected.  Only that thread.

I agree that this forum software didn't download a virus from clicking on the thread I started.
Now if you clicked on the link in my message (and I'm going back and disabling it) yes you could have gotten something. A lot of these scams either have bots that upload your email address for their lists or download some form of spyware and that's what you virus scanner detected.

Sounds like you need either Spy bot http://www.safer-networking.org/ (//%22http://www.safer-networking.org/%22) or Ad Aware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/downloads.html (//%22http://www.lavasoftusa.com/downloads.html%22)
installed to clear out various forms of spyware and no most virus detection software des not catch them. Only by accident when a file happens to be named closely to a virus one.

I also looked at that thread, and didn't get anything ..... Could be that it is a false alarm ......

Ok, I am glad I didn't click on the link. I thought that opening the thread was the cause of the problem. At this point, I'm running a complete scan to be sure.  My spy catcher/firewall probably caught it and stopped it without my even knowing.

Now when I click on the thread I do not get the virus detection allert.  I see that the link was deleted.  So my guess is it wassomething being detected in the link that was provided.  Glad I didn't click on that link!

#1 why in God's name would you think I would keep a link on my computer that might have a virus or spyware attached when clicked on?

#2 all it was was a email sucker, you click the link, it grabs your email address.
Good proven email addresses can be worth up to $.10 each on a Email list.

Is that me you sound upset with?
I hope you don't think I meant to imply that you would leave it...

Thanks for removing it.  I get a little jumpy when the virus stuff pops up.  As many may remember, we got a nasty virus around this time last year tht wiped out our ENTIRE Hard drive.  There was nothing left but a black screen.  The worst part was that all the photos that we had were gone.  Yes, yes, yes.... now we know better than to no back up.  We do routinely now.  It was a nightmare trying to get everthing up and running again.

Woow, that IS harsh indeed. I am sorry I asked for it., I didn't have any bad intentions, just wanted to see what was there.  :(

Things are beginning to thaw a bit now but I suspect it will freeze back over tonight. The sun peeped out momentarily but the birds still slide when they land on the slick surfaces. I'm staying in a few more days till it is safe to walk outside.
