Title: F-sil Got His Orders
Post by: angelsmom10 on Mar 11, 2004, 08:23 AM
Last night, we got the news we have been anxiously waiting for, however it is not what we wanted to hear....

F-SIL got his orders..... San Diego :% ... he was so sure that it would be VA.

However, with his knee injury, he has to get that cleared up first before we can move on.  He will not have the MRI till April 13 and when we know the extent of the injury, we should be able to move forward.  The kids do not want to think about the future till the knee is taken care of.

I personally have not talked to F-SIL so I can't find out his state of mind.  I know DD is upset, but she just wants to get past the knee before thinking about San Diego.  I wish she would start to think further ahead ... it's hard not knowing what is going to happen.

I know you are concerned because of how far away the kids will be, but San Diego is a prime spot to be stationed. The weather there is almost always nice, it is a tourist town so there is always lots to do there. Not being military I can't speak for the base, but the liberty should be a lot of fun. The San Diego Zoo is wonderful. AND, it gives YOU an excuse to come visit California. If you do come to visit, hook up with SC Campers (Southern CA) the sister Pop-Up camping club of Neck-Neff-Cough (Northern CA). I'm sure someone could show you around or give you pointers. Heck, someone here on the boards could probably tell your kids where to look for a place to live, if they are not going to live on the base.

Anyway, all will work out.

Joan

Hey, this is another prime example of how our camping friends here are always willing to give such comforting and helpful advice when "situations" come up causing extreme concern. :)

My brother recently retired from the Navy and although he spent the majority of his years stationed out of Norfolk, he spent several years in San Diego and absolutely loved it.  Near perfect weather wise too.... Not too hot, not too cold and so much to do around there.

Going to be harder on MOM with her daughter that far away I think.......  (http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/cwm/3dlil/sad.gif)

Right now the hard part is not knowing what is going on or going to happen.  They are not going to commit to a date till he knows more about his knee.  For all we know, he'll need surgery and stay in Chicago for several months and then they turn around and re-do his orders.

Sigh ... Such is military life ...... They had better get a coping mechanism in place for the unexpected to happen any time. The good thing is, they will really took good care of his knee at no cost  :W and make sure it heals properly !

Sending prayers for you guys, that you end up in the "right" place, and for a successful (and timely) surgery!

Nancy, if they DO end up in San diego, they will love it--it is a super place anyhow, but especially for young people. I've spent several months in southern Cal  and have  always found Californians very friendly and helpful to those of us from other parts.  One other really great thing about  California: if you arent in the mood for the beach, it doesnt take much time at all to get to the mountains.   :D

As always, the uncertainty  of  the future is very hard to deal with, but in the meantime, things will work out slowly but surely and before long, it will be April and the knee questions will be answered, and as Birol says, your F-SIL will get good care and it will not cost him anything out of his own pocket--thank goodness!

He went to the physical therapist this week and they put him on crutches.. it is looking more and more like surgery.  The next few weeks will tell.

OK, I'm stuck - F-SIL?  I thought I knew them all.

We love San Diego - I often wonder what would have happened if I had taken a standing job offer I had years ago to move there (instead of visiting).

Absolutely no lurking allowed. :D   It would be a cause for famous cookie baking, though. :D   All the old timers here know what that means.    ;)  :p  :D

OK, Birol - what are you trying to say??

The Campfire is a bad section for me to be in, which is why it's one I lurk in and out of.  I express my opinion enough in General and Mr. Fixit.

F-SIL (Tim) arrive in San Diego and reported to ship yesterday (a day early) and found out some frightening news.  The ship he assigned to is apparently going to be sent to Japan.  Seems a ship in Japan is being decommissioned sometime in the next 6 months and his ship is going over there to replace it.  There is roomer that since his orders are so new, he may be reassigned to a different ship (they apparently are not sending any CS2's or CSE's.. not sure).  Also, unless you are at least a Chief Petty Officer, you cannot take a wife overseas unless on your $$$$ and then not allowed on base.  So we're holding our breath.

He called me yesterday and wanted to know how DD was doing; he didn't want to tell her until he knew more, but seems he ended up telling her late last night anyway... he can't keep any secrets from her.

My heart is just aching for them.

Arrrggghhh, that is some disturbing news, military life .... I have a very dear cyber friend who is also in the US NAVY. He gets assigned to the aircraft carriers all the time, if I told you the places he has been to, he would have to come and kill me :)

I hope it somehow works out and they consider assigning him to another ship or maybe he can stay at a base in USA.

Oh Nancy, I feel so bad for your DD and her future DH. The military can be both a heartbreaking and a rewarding career.  Its certainly very difficult when you have to be separated from your spouse for that long a time.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed that everything works out for them!!!

yes--young love is difficult enough anyhow without all these complications.  keeping all of you in my thoughts Nancy and hoping that all will work out for your lovebirds.
