Title: Who was it ?
Post by: forestwalker on Apr 15, 2004, 06:47 PM
Dw and I were driving down the San Diego Freeway last Wednesday(4/7)  when we spotted a dark green,or blue, late model van towing a Starcraft pop up with a PUT sticker on it. It was in the late afternoon, near  Palos Verdes-Laguna Hills. When we waved our second PUT sticker(first is on our silver 2001 Dodge Ram) at the family in the van,it looked like we got a response. Now we are trying to figure out who it was.Any ideas?

I have never spotted a PUT bumper sticker, wow you are lucky.  Maybe they are camping and will post when they get back. :)

We were pretty excited about it.Mary was driving at the time-she attempted to "stay with" the pop uppers for about 50 miles, while I attempted to catch their attention by waving our second PUT sticker at them.We also passed them,so they could see the bumper sticker on our truck. It is sometimes difficult to get other's attention on the Southern California freeways.Driving there often requires intense concentration on the heavy traffic. Also, many people avoid looking directly at the occupants of other vehicles.
                  Thanks for the reply.

It wasn't me which means I wasn't going camping   I have mine proudly displayed on my PU's bumper and am Always on the look out for a PUT sticker whenever I see a PU on the road

OK, since the spotted person isn't stepping forward we may have to do this by a process of elimination!

It wasn't me. :D  :W

Wasn't GSMx2 or G-Whiz, sorry to say. But we have good clues... Starcraft, dark green or blue late model van... If it is one of "us", that should really make it easy to pin down.  Could you see how many people in the van?  Kids?  Dogs?  Any other clues???

California licence plates. There were,at least, four occupants.2 adults in the front. At least one child in the back. There possibly was a dog passenger.I believe that the Starcraft pop up was a tan color. The van,or minivan, continued southbound when we exited the freeway at the Oso Parkway,in Mission Viejo. The trailer had two stickers-One PUT;we have forgotten what the other said.

You know, this  happened at least twice before on the old board and although we had a fairly long thread wondering both times who they were, no one ever  responded to the sighting or the details of it, so we were left to wonder if they were just magazine subscribers or had picked the stickers up at a RV show and just didnt belong to the board--or maybe--God forbid!-- didnt have  a computer.

:WHave the rest of you fallen into the habit lately --as I seem to--of thinking that just about everyone "in the civilized world" has a computer?:W

It wasn't us. We have a dark green Astro and a Coleman Westlake. The only person I believe in our SC Camper group who has a Starcraft is Cstars. The have a silver Toyota Previa minivan but their popup is white not tan.

Maybe it was someone from NNC traveling South for Spring Break.     I guess I don't pay that much attention to who has what kind of PU (probably shouldn't say that here).  I know of one Starcraft in NNC, but his does not fit the description.

The only people with Starcraft Popups that I know are

1. Surfcal, but his is only half a popup, and he tows it with a full size GMC truck, complete with awning, bike rack, basket....

2. Bryan & Marie, but it is a new 2004 and he tows it with a 400 hp ford bronco

3. Calstates 360 and 361 used to camp in a Starcraft, and it did have a PUT sticker and an Alt_rv_group sticker on it, but what they would be doing with in San Diego using a Van to tow is suscucious, unless of course they sold it and never told us ;)

Are they sure that's enough power for pulling a pop-up?

That is really dificult for us to answer, because we are not very familiar with the line over time.We had an '02 Starcraft. The one we saw was probably older than what we owned.I think that we have seen the color, size, and shape on models over 10 yrs. old,but what about the new Centenniels? I know they are larger. Are they not more rectangular than the other Starcrafts manufactured during the last ten years ? Are they available in a variety of colors?

Well, we live in Foothill Ranch, which is right by Laguna Hills/Mission Viejo, but it wasn't us.

This mystery definitely has me intrigued. If it weren't for the Starcraft PU, I would have thought it might have been MrFlinders, but Randy and Kerry have a Coleman.....Birol could be right, it may be a former PUT-owned PU.

Did it look like this: http://community.webshots.com/photo/100443887/100444798oMzxZp (//%22http://community.webshots.com/photo/100443887/100444798oMzxZp%22) (only popped down?)

What about Hollypop and Hoosierpop? They're from San Diego, but I'm blanking on their PU. My other guess would be either PaulL or Kimrb266...Hmmm......I'll keep thinking....

Maybe Scott was biking home from the harbour,
and he had a spare PUT sticker in his backpack,
and he saw a Starcraft popup parked,
and he snook up on it,
and put his spare PUT sticker on the bumper.

and then went home and found that was his only PUT sticker,
but when he went back,
the Starcraft Popup was gone,
along with his only PUT sticker

They have a Toyota Sienna minivan.  I believe it is silver in color.  The only thing I am wondering about is it is newer (2001 or 2002) and I think it is white in color, not tan.

Thanks, Scott!!  Already bookmarked!  Maybe you should start a separate thread for it, so people who aren't keeping up with the CSI team will know about it ....

Quote from: griffsmomI have 2 e-mail addresses for Paul L. I sent my e-mails to both and only his earthlink account bounced back. I think we're still in the hunt.

CSI...I like it! Does this make me Grisham? (I did recently make a "bug jar" quilt for Griffin if that helps to qualify me...) ;) :J
Lori... I only had the Earthlink address. :(  If you do get through to him would you please have him contact me so I can get him back onto our contact list.  Even IF he isn't the World Famous Bumper Sticker Phantom.

All this excitement over a PUT sticker... maybe it's just someone here who doesn't want to be acknowledged.

How about everyone in CA on the weekends take a road trip thru the CG's and see if you can spot this person again.

Naw, I think Paul just hasn't checked his e-mail yet. :)  I think he's going to get a really good chuckle out of this. :J

I am glad this thing is still on going.  It would be a shame to have it end as a mystery. :)

I was thinking of this over the weekend also.  Glad it was brought back up to the top.

Waaahh!  :%  Here is Paul L's reply:

"Lori and all,

How nice it is to hear from you! Aside from not having ventured out of San Diego county for quite some time, it very well could have been us going by your description. Our popup has seen more of the inside of our garage lately than the open road. In 2004 we've only made it out once so far, to Doheny State Beach in April. So I'm sorry to say we aren't the answer to your mystery. The mystery family is still out there somewhere driving the freeways or better yet, all popped up beside some mountain stream. Thank-you to all for the kind and flattering words.

Best wishes,

Paul L and family"

I don't know; I think that it still may have been Paul L.

Forestwalker: Are you able to better pinpoint where you saw the PUT sticker?  Palos Verdes to Laguna Hills is close to a 60 mile distance.  Could it have been around Dana Point and Doheny State Beach that you saw the mystery family?

Lori (who never gives up) :)

We were probably between the Redondo Beach area and the off-ramp that one would use to access Mission Hospital. We were Southbound. Hope this helps. Thanks all for the help and the response.   Steve

Well, that's not very encouraging for it having been Paul L, unless they were really far North of Doheny.  I hate to give up, but I may have to admit defeat on this one... :%
