Title: Bal Leveler Mod ??
Post by: la62pv on May 14, 2004, 07:10 PM
I finally bought myself a BAL Leveler.  Once I got it I realized that they are made for 13/14 inch wheels and I have 12 inch wheels on my Coachmen Clipper.  Before I return it I figured I'd ask.  Has anybody modified one to fit 12 inch tires?  I ordered it from Camping World and they told me there is no factory Mod to handle this.  I hate to return it but it looks like I may damage my tires if I use it.

Several folks have reported using the BAL with smaller tires with no problems. Try it! At worst, you may have to add a piece of board to each BAL pad but I doubt it.

I use it on my 10 inch tires and it works just fine.

I have read post's up here where people have attached pieces of 2x4 or similar product to the pads where the contact the wheels to use them as spacers. I would assume if this works, you probably could use a couple of extra large hose clamps or cable ties to help hold the wood in place when not in use?!?!

Try it and see if it fits your tires.  I bet it will.  If you have smaller tires, the load bearing pads may come up higher on the sides of the tires.  If this is the case you will need to crank it up more to get the PU level.  You can use a couple of pieces of 1 X ? scraps to make a "pad" to put on the load bearing pads so there is a tighter fit. :)

The worst that happens when using a small tire/wheel combo is you lose a certain amount of lift due to the fact the leveler needs to be cranked up farther to contact the smaller diameter tire/wheel. Simply placing boards between the leveler pads and the tire will give you back the lift capacity.

The only mod I did to mine was to weld my initials onto it so it is less likely to get stolen.

Thank you all.  I guess I'll keep it.  I may put some wood on the pads to get them a little closer to the tires. It sure will be grat to stop foolin around with those leveler blocks.
