Title: Kingsford vs Dutch Ovens - new problem
Post by: AustinBoston on Jun 01, 2004, 04:29 PM
If you use Kingsford charcoal briquettes with your Dutch Oven, you might want to check out the discussion (now lasting several months) over at the IDOS forum (http://www.idos.com/phorum/list.php?f=4).  Seems there have been a lot of changes that really degrade it's performance when DO cooking.  Kingsford's official line is that it has not changed at all.

AB--great info!  Thanks for sharing this with us!! :)

I had to dig a bit in the IDOS forum to find the info, so I've pasted the links to the actual artcile comparing charcoal burn times/ash production, as well as a review of all the various charcoals out there.

The lump or "real charcoal" as we call it is too much of a pain to find around here. As for the briquettes I still buy what ever is in the store; Kingsford or whatever.

They get hot, I cook, I eat.
I've got too many reasons now on how I can screw up cooking in a DO without worrying about ash production or binder percentages.
If the purists are so up in arm's let them go back to burning real wood and shoveling the coals onto their DO's.
