Wait until the PU Rally, bring his popup. (Without any of his repairs done)
Enlisted the help of all the folks at the rally.
Pop open a beer and let everyone else get to work.
Work gets done, no headaches for Birol.
We've got tons of "experts" on this board. We'd have you all ready in about 3 days.
BTW.. I'm a real Wizz when it comes to furnaces....just ask Cheryl.
And for those of you that have to have it spelled out....this is a joke.
C U at the Rally....bring your toolbox...I'll bring mine.

You almost made me have a heart attack after what Gene wrote before leaving ... I am even reluctant to ask opinions now :(
Birol as far as I'm concerned with gene, good ridance. What was said yesterday just went right through me. You haven't done anything anyone else hasn't done. As far as questions or opinions go ask away. You paid your membership and are intitled to if you ask me.

Sorry, I don't even know what post you're refering to.
I've been told that I need to work on my timing.
That's the reason I included a "disclaimer" in my post.
I'm always ready to "lend a hand" when needed. That is what I thought this "community" was all about.
I was trying to generate a laugh, not start any trouble.

CAPEd CODger, I knew exactly what your trying to say. The problem is that some people must have forgot that this is a community and we ARE here to help each other.
Gene who? And, where's the post?
Hey I caught the joke and had a big smiloe.
There still is a lot to be done on Finally ! SO everyone can gather at 104 and help me figure out stuff :):):)
NO!!
What he should have done was when he was at Firefyter-Emt's house, found a reason to not tow it home to Canada, and leave it at Lee's house, telling him he would pick it up on the way to the Rally in a few weeks.
Now we know Lee just couldn't just leave a poor, neglected popup just sitting there, and would have had all the repairs and modifications done in time for the rally!!!!Heck, he'd even have the lift kit added, the extended tongue, with storage box, and maybe even the full undercarriage lights!!
Only problem with this, would be poor Andrea and the kids, beeing without a Dad for a few weeks!!
Quote from: 6QuigsOnly problem with this, would be poor Andrea and the kids, beeing without a Dad for a few weeks!!
And Poor Birol who never would have gotten that thing into Canada after all the mods Lee made on it!
Ummm, I'm curious now too, must have missed a post somewhere...

Naa, we immediately understand from the first few words, not to worry Lee :)

Weeeeel, Now that I have imported it and have a license plate on it and a registration, I can have anything I want done on this baby ! And the cretins (This is not a such bad word is it ? I sure hope not) at customs will not be any wiser !
So, Lee, How much for a Hitch extension job ? :) I need more space there for a storage box and a battery !!!
Nothing spectacular, on anyones side. Moderators did an excellent job !

Did you just drain the oil, buffer it up, and then replace it in the car? ;)
LOl.. That is my wife for ya, give her an oil change to do and she buffes the car instead.. :lee ducking:

I'm sorry if I take offense to what you said about Gene. How well do you know him? I know him pretty darn well and met him through these boards. I went to the 2002 Eastern Rally and met him and his family personally and have camped with them since.
I guess this should not have bothered me as much as it did because it was "as far as I'm concerned" and I don't know you nor do I really feel that your "concern" is of any value to any of us that know Gene. His integrity is impeccable and he has high moral values that may be beyond the ability of some to comprehend or interpret.
If you would like these boards to stay unoffensive please do not be offensive to my friends or anyone elses.
Charlie, you mean Gene from NH?? Heck yea, Really nice guy.. They were right beside us at the 02 Rally....

Sorry Chas, but yours is also an offensive post.
I've always liked and respected Gene too. I wasn't privy to seeing the thread that was posted. For whatever reason, it seems that when the time comes to leave, there are those who go quietly and those who must begin bashing everyone and everything.
Sometimes we post things that are taken out of context or are misplaced. We can correct ourselves or apologize when our leveler head prevails but, in Genes case, he's no longer able to do it himself as he's now gone.
Strange that so many people, who departed in November, found their way back on the eve of the ending of their subscriptions. While I miss some of the departed, I don't miss disparaging remarks made by anyone.

Thanks for pointing that out Al, I have corrected it so as not to point to anyone directly.
I have to say something here. I remember when we all voted to have GeneF as the Mayor of PUT. He was one of the most mellow, fairminded and friendly people on this board. His advice was always right on, and he would jump right in to remind us to play nice when we got unruly. I was among the folks who really respected him.
But....for some reason, on the very last night of his membership, he placed a post on this board, and I was able to see it before it disappeared. It was one of the nastiest, small minded, petty and offensive posts I have ever seen here, and totally unlike the GeneF we all knew and loved. It was directed at B, and suggested that he didn't have any business posting about his adventures with Finally, among other things. My first thought was that it wasn't Gene that wrote it, but I can't say for sure. Anyway, it was posted at a time when there would be no way for anyone on this board to object or respond to it, and that made it even more offensive. If Gene was that upset about how he sees things here at PUT, then the others are right, he needed to go elsewhere, not for our sakes, but for his. I'm sorry to see things get to that point, and hope that he has better experiences where he is now.

A few days ago, on one of my rare brief "reading" visits to the board duriing this long trip I'm now on, I am sorry to say that I did see GeneF's shockingly ugly parting shot about Birol. (What has Birol ever done to anyone to deserve the criticism heaped upon him by some departed members anyhow?--I dont ever remember him saying an unkind word about anyone or attacking anyone or making any kind of trouble. He is a gentle, and often-funny, soul who loves camping and this board and brings smiles to all of us and reminds us of our own days as novice popup owners.))
Toni and I had the privilege of spending time with Gene and his wife at the '02 rally and found them both delightful. It is difficult to reconcile those unfortunate last-minute words of his with the person we were so fond of here when he was elected Mayor of the place. I miss the old original GeneF.
Hi Elisa!!! Enjoy that vaction!!!!
As for the post, guess I'll have to take everyones say-so on this. Since he's now over at the campground I moderate at, guess I'll just have to watch and see....
Like Toni, I wondered if the post was written by someone else who assumed Gene's name, knowing that Gene had departed. The post's tone was certainly out of character for the Gene that we have gotten to know throughout the years.
And Birol, don't take it personally. I believe there were lots of comments before you came to PUT about this board being too chummy and the topics being too personal and "off topic". I guess some things don't change. Many of us have been around for years, even from the old coolboard, and so naturally, the conversation has moved on from basic camping info to informal chats. That doesn't mean we don't enjoy chatting about the whys or hows to camp. We just need a novice to ask those questions to bring the conversation back to the basics. This isn't middle school where the new kids are often left out; everyone is welcome to pull up a chair and sit a spell.
In Charlie's defense, I think he just reacted to the bashing that Gene received since he considers Gene a friend. Charlie has always been a friend to this board so let's just all take a deep breath. Maybe someone should ask Gene if the comments were his. And Charlie, I'm sorry you can't make this trip. It's not like you to miss one.

I saw it too and was also quite shocked by his attitude. So much so that the only thing I could say to him in regards to what he said was "Shame on you Gene".
I too remember Gene as being witty and charming... an all around likeable fellow.. I rememer him as quite a gentleman. Interesting to talk to (spoke with him at the fireside chat on many occasions) and he always seemed interested in listening to what others had to say.
It seems that while there has been a little bit of bashing (bashing may be a little extreme of a word... maybe thumping is a better word) PUT over at PUX, Gene has had the restraint to be very diplomatic in his comment about PUT. He could have really opened up about the negative way things ended for him. Either he doesn't want everyone there to know how off his parting was here, or he's regained his composure and gotten back to his old self. I am hoping for the latter.
Quote from: wiininkweIt was directed at B, and suggested that he didn't have any business posting about his adventures with Finally, among other things.
Sorry Toni, but this is completely wrong. The posts Gene made were about Birol's posts about his personal life and that it was rarely anything to do with camping. Gene never said a word about him posting about camping related topics.
Just trying to set the record straight here about what the posts said before someone who never read them start believing this as cold hard fact.

That must have been close to how I felt about the inflamatory comments that have been made toward me in the past. But then again, it depends on who you are, or rather "are not" as to weather you can be a recepient of those type's of comments or not. Lots of double standards going around this place.

Yes, I agree. I know that you were also treated pretty harshly at times in the past and I'm sorry that a lot of what was posted from others AND you wasn't nipped in the bud at the time. You'll have to admit ,that some of your past postings were less than ammenable. But it's nice to see that, while you still are a bit hurt by the fact that you thought you were mistreated, (I'm not the one to judge who was right and who was wrong) you didn't take off for good. Yes, there was a cooling off period, but you are still here and are making a great effort at positive contributions. I wish some of the others who left when all that nastiness went down were still here too. Everyone has a bad day, week, month. No need to throw away the good stuff just because of a few bad moments. What do they say? "Throwing the baby out with the bath water"?
If you had left for good it would have been a shame. And I will miss Gene here too. I am going to miss a lot of the others that have decided for one reason or another not to renew.
red edit to clarify statements I made
what I said...
Quoteamong other things
one of the things Gene said was that he was tired of reading about "as Birol's world turns" and he also made references to people who are willing to accept things from others rather than paying full price for them, sort of a veiled criticism of Birol's efforts to save a few bucks. Birol posts his adventures and problems in the campfire forum, as do many of the rest of us, that's what that forum was provided to us for. It's where we demonstrate our friendship and support for one another. As I said, Gene had always been someone who's remarks were never less than fairminded, and open and generous. The things said in this post, whether Gene actually wrote them or not, were none of those things. I am not bashing Gene, just not agreeing with the remarks that were made.

.......
Bearbait, it's good to see you are still here and participating.
As for Gene's disapproval of Birol's posts about his personal life, which you mention above, this really took me by surprise-- as I recall, the campfire forum was created for just such types of information or requests for support. Sometimes I think Birol might have accidently posted some of this in the wrong forum but the mods always moved it and besides most of us have done the same dumb thing from time to time.
I think it is very valuable for us to still have a member here like you , who is in close touch with those who left and who can continue to share their ideas with us as well as his own. Keep up the good work; a dissenting opinion can be very helpful .
"But then again, it depends on who you are, or rather "are not" as to weather you can be a recepient of those type's of comments or not. Lots of double standards going around this place."
Bearbait, you've made these same comments before, as tho you believe that some who participate on this forum have some kind of privilege over others. You never have made it clear who you feel is favored, or what kind of 'special status' they could possibly have. Anything that any of us says is subject to the same scrutiny from the mods. No one can be rude or disrespectful to others without coming under fire for it. A lot of us have been censured for overstepping our bounds at one time or another, you and I both included. But, there are times when it seems as tho it's important not to wait for a mod to let another member know when they are being a bit too outspoken or disrespectful. We take a chance when we do that, that we will be misunderstood, or thought too harsh. To me, the duty to step forward and protest against bad treament of another member makes it worth taking that chance. I was taught to "do the right thing because it's the right thing to do".

Bearbait, I think if you go back and look, you'll discover that people here did not call you unkind names or criticise YOU, but disagreed with some of the things you said about people here like Birol or the way the board functions. You sometimes reacted very strongly to this--as most of us have done in the heat of the moment--but the disagreements were not intended to start a war, rather were posted to express another point of view. Do you have any examples of people being abusive to you personally?--if so, the ones who did this could take a look and re-consider how to deal with this in the future Also, I wonder if others here sometimes felt you went over the line in the matter of civility?
Also, I have to respectfully disagree with you about the "double standard" accusation you have made against this board. Precisely what is this statement based on? Dave and the mods are known for being totally even-handed about the way they run things and what they expect of ALL of us. I wonder if anyone here can give examples of favoritism toward anyone when it came to editing, locking, or deleting threads. I think it would be very useful to Dave and the moderators for you to provide details since this remark may give new members the wrong impression of what goes on here.
Quote from: NightOwlAlso, I have to respectfully disagree with you about the "double standard" accusation you have made against this board. Precisely what is this statement based on?
The way I see it, BB is talking about how Gene made some negaive comments about another member and his comments were swiftly deleted. But when all the tension happened before with BB he feels enough action wasn't taken when people were speaking negaitvely about him.
I agree that most of the criticism BB recieved was in relation to his ideas and comments, and were
for the most part not directed at him as a person. But There WERE comments about trolls. And while noone directly called BB a troll, we all new what the insinuations were.
All I can say is, while I didn't agree with many of the things BB had been arguing, and I confronted him on a couple of them, I wasn't happy about the real negativity that was here on this board.
And Elisa, you got some flack too that was undeserved.
But that's all over and done with, right Guys and Gals? We learn, we move on...
By the way... I think it's very interesting that what started out as a light and "fluffy" post has turned into a serious discussion about important matters! Now that's a reverse hijack if I ever saw on!

It may be that 10 people come to the defense of one but those same 10 people do not come to the defense of all, no matter the reason. The attitude seems to be to "tread lightly" when you speak of some but do not do the same for all. I noticed a lot of pouncing in this post when Bearbait merely cleared up the topic of Gene's post. It is like a one-two-three jump on him for what he clarified. Is it the message or the messenger?? I have to wonder..............
As far as I'm concerned this thread was hijacked by post #3.

Charlesd60, as a "Super Moderator" you surely must have the power to delete or edit posts which are unfair to anyone (as you feel post # 3 was.) Perhaps you ought to do this whenever you see unacceptable behaviour where someone innocent is being trashed by those with their own unkind or destructive agenda.
Okay, I'm going to try to say this as clearly as I can, even tho I don't quite have my thoughts completely together on this.
When I posted and said that I thought Gene's remarks "I'm tired about reading about 'As Birol's world turns'", referred to his many posts about Finally, I was giving my impression of something I saw, that no longer is around to go back and examine. My interpretation of Gene's remark.
Along comes Bearbait and says that he is going to clarify this issue by telling us that Gene really meant that he was sick of Birol posting about his personal problems. Again, the post no longer exsists, can't be examined again. Bearbait's interpretation of Gene's remarks.
Gene is also no longer with us, and can't come in and say "Hey, this is what I was trying to say." Unless of course, he can tell someone else what he meant, and they can post it for us.
Then, our super mod Chas, comes and says that Bearbait "merely cleared up the topic of Gene's post". Again, a subjective opinion.
But, the thread was hijacked, yes, maybe by post no.3, and yet again when the topic started to change reflecting the opinion Bearbait holds about But then again, it depends on who you are, or rather "are not" as to weather you can be a recepient of those type's of comments or not. Lots of double standards going around this place. I asked him who and what he meant by that, and NightOwl asked him the same question (quite independentally from one another, i might add) and he never answered. Instead, super mod chas now claims that Bearbait has been "pounced on" for his remarks. The question has never been answered, even tho it's a topic raised often by Bearbait. My thought on it is, that there are several groups of folks on this board who find things about one another that they can relate to. Bearbait is part of one of those groups, and they kinda stick together when one of them expresses an opinion. I also have some close friends(among them Birol) and we kind of stick together because we kinda think alike. Isn't that normal? So then, what's the problem with that?
Now, for my last point, I feel that as a mod, Chas has the responsibility to moderate these kinds of threads. This instance tho, almost looks like he has entered the debate. Is that how it's suppose to be done? I know that he has the right to post as an individual member of the board, not trying to say he shouldn't, but when it's an issue of 'moderating', is his personal opinion suppose to enter the mix? Just wondering, maybe someone can clarify this for me.
At any rate, it seems as if this thread has taken on a life of it's own, and I for one am tired of trying to explain my thought processes.
T
;)
I agree that ChasD60's post is perplexing?(not sure if that's the word I'm looking for...).....Is it meant to contribute to the debate, or was it intended to give a hint of moderation being imposed.
I think that having a moderator post as a participant in the discussion can cause confusion. It would be better if the moderators had 2 different screen names to post under. One to be used as a general member of the board, to post opionins, ideas, questions, just like any other member. Then another (like Mod1, Mod2, Mod3) for moderating posts. This would instantly clarify whether the posts are intended to participate in the discussion or to act as moderations.
At the risk of unifying everyone against me....;)
It seems to me that in the big scheme of things this thread, with the exception of the initial post, is completely ridiculous. This is a message board about pop up camping--an interest we all have in common. If Gene or someone posting under his name, posted something that was harsh before moving on to other places in cyber space, then so be it. I know that words can definitely be hurtful and that is a terrible thing to do, but the proper response would have been to report the post to the moderators and then take any discussion about it off the boards. Birol and anyone else on the buddy list could have been e-mailed and comforted and supported there. Instead, this thread has disintegrated into what I would label as "grand-standing," with nothing more than verbal barbs flying back and forth.
I'm not saying that this board is not an important place in many people's lives. I know from reading the Campfire that many people have been able to maintain their sanity when life was treating them badly. I myself have been the focus of someone's less than gracious post, and NNC and SCCampers will never let me live it down, but the important point about that is that the discussion about it was something we took off the boards.
Sometimes, you just have to balance whether something is truly relevant enough to take it to heart or to just let it go. I would suggest that anyone's harsh parting shots should just be let go rather than giving them the invigorated life they have now received from this thread.
I'm not pointing fingers at anyone, and I believe that each of us is entitled to his or her opinion. But when threads start to sound like this one, I think it behooves us all to take a step back and ask how important is this thread really in the big scheme of things. I would hope that all of our lives are more fulfilling than that. Besides, wouldn't we all rather be posting about more fun and exciting things...like pop up camping...or zoom? :)
Point well taken.
Let's move on shall we gang? I mean even Bearbait isn't participating in this anymore and he was one of the original players. And gene isn't here to clarify anything for himself so it's a moot discussion.
On to better things, or rather back to the original topic....
I wonder how Birol's roof has turned out! I wish someone from the group there would update us.
I bet someone has a computer there and if they do, I'll bet they are either shaking their heads at the previous shennaningan we have been up to or are slapping their knees getting a big kick out of our silliness. God, I hope not!
What a nice post:) . I wonder if Birol's camper is getting an overhaul at the rally this week??? Plenty of people going that are probably willing to "experiment" with his camper.:yikes:

good work, Charlie--:) Done like the good moderator you are!! (And I bet there isnt a single soul here who wishes you hadnt done it sooner! Kinda like making naughty little kids behave, isnt it?)
:U Hey, Birol, ya better get that thing finished and polished up--Toni and I are coming up there before long on an inspection tour!:W :canada:
Hey... fantastic thread!!! I was just wondering whether or not Birol got his roof fixed at the rally! We need an insider there to give us some details on what's going on!!!
Hey Birol!! Can you hear me?!?!?!?
How was is it sleeping in your beloved camper, Finally?!?!
well, after HomeCrew posted the link , I went over there to check. Got a suggestion, Birol--how 'bout changing the name from "Finally" to "Guinea Pig"?
Quote from: NightOwl"Guinea Pig"?
Sorry about the hijack but this is too creepy! I was just at the deer thread and posted to you about Guinea Hens. 2 Guineas at the same time... weird!
Thanks Chas, good job, we should have all known better than to let the whole thing get so crazy. Glad to see it's back to being all about Birol and Finally!

No mods at the rally ! But there is a huge one scheduled for this coming weekend ! We are getting the roof off it and fixing it good with Lee ! I also got a fantastic vent at silent auction (DIRT CHEAP HAHAHAHA) and that will also be installed ! I splurged and got wireless internet access for 24 hours (ends today around early afternoon) So that I could check my e-mail and stuff. Yeah, with my laptop :)
It was great not sleeping on the ground ! It rained so hard and so continouosly the first nigth and next day on and off hard second night and so on ! We were water proof :) And it was nice not sleeping under the threat of running water in the tent :) Storage is at a premium, but nothing which can be done about it ! I am doing the best I can , just with DD and me, it is working out pretty well actually. Four would be a tight fit !
Air matresses are perfect for the bunks !!! Putting the original bed foam underneath wouyld make it uncomfortably close to the canvas !
Propane connection is solid and working ! I love being able to heat water inside for coffee and stuff. Electrical connection is holding on as well, laptop is running on 110 V right now ! We need curtains though ... having to open and close canvas for privacy is getting boring pretty quickly, with DD changing to swimsuit/clothes ten times a day ! A Dorm fridge is in the plans instead of the ice-box, it will be too nice to have one, since we will almost always have electricity where we camp, it will be dumb not to have a dorm fridge installed !
So, all in all, Finally is upto the task ! And yeah, this is what I should have been doing all this time !
CAMP CAMP CAMP ;) :D :tent:
Glad you are having a great first trip in your PU!!!!
Quote from: birolNo mods at the rally !

Sounds like things are going great! About the fridge. Consider not installing it but just placing it on the counter. You can just use the icebox as a food storage cupboard for things that don't need to stay cold, like bread, chips, cookies, etc. And you never know when it may be nice to have a little extra icebox space... Don't think of it as the fridge will take up counter space... you would have to store all the bread items on the counter too so it's an even trade. pLus you can still use the top of the fridge as counter space... It will actually make a good work height for food preperation.
Birol..it sounds like you're really enjoying yourself and that all the hard work you've done on "Finally" has paid off! You're gonna really be hooked on camping now! :>

OK, having owned that exact same model, I know something that Mommamia doesn't, and that is there is no counter in the trailer...so to speak. However, what I did was utilize the rear dinette bench seat (galley side of trailer), and utilize the rest of that seat for additional kitchen type of stuff like the microwave, silverware drawer, and a 3 drawer sterilite plastic drawers. On the opposite bench seat we used that for clothing bags & overnite kits. Not much need for 2 dinettes unless you have 6 or more people camping. This also help break up the clutter, limiting it all to the rear dinette area, and also kept more open floor space without the rear table!
BTW, removing the Ice Box would be good, the small dorm fridge would fit right inside the opening. But I found that bending over to access it was a pain, and liked having the dorm refridge up on that bench. Additionally, the existing cooler box left in place made it easier to sell it later, and provided a GREAT bread box! I removed the cooler box in the first Starcraft, but not in the one like you have, it worked out so much better using the rear bench.

So what is above the icebox that's there? There has to be some sort of small counter top above it? Oh wait, that must be where the stove is, no?

So then I take it you are more in favor of leaving the icebox in place, using it for storage like I suggested and placing the dorm fridge on a bench seat.
Can I make one more suggestion? We found it extremely convenient to set the fridge up outside the camper. But we have an awning and I know Birol doesn't. But that's no biggie... a tarp to throw over it to keep out any stray raindrops that sneak out at night would work. And if you are worried about critters getting in at night, a sturdy padlock works well.
The area above the cooler does indeed hold the range and sink, and it's got maybe a couple inches around these things and that's it. And I do recommend keeping the cooler, like I said, it makes a GREAT bread box!
Birol's trailer has TWO dinettes in it, and realistically speaking he only needs one of them. With both tables up, there is very little open floor space, but with one of the tables removed, that opens up quite a bit of floor space. Additionally, mine had 110vac power outlet next to that rear bench seat, so it made the location a no brainer. I don't think Birol's has all the power outlets, but he sure could add one in where necesary.
There should be one counter opposite of the galley next to the door, but it's small and better served for other things, but I suppose if push comes to shove he could try and put the fridge there.
