Well, In Turkey that is ...
According to our (Ours ? theirs ? I do not know I am confused) laws, if someone who rapes a woman marries to the girl/woman he rapes, he doesn't go to jail, as they are now married and what happened sort of becomes a non issue.
I know weird ... but if the woman agrees to it, man is off the hook !
Now because of this law what was happenign was, man were raping children (AARRRGHH "I CAN NOT TYPE IT HERE IT WILL GET CENSORED" TYPE OF SENTENCE!!) aged say 9 to 13 or whatever, and going to jail because of rape. The man's family were bribing/forcing/threatining the girls family to persuade their daughter to marry the man. (This just happened a week ago to a 12 year old girl) So the poor girl was "agreeing" to marry his rapist ! And her family was getting a big truck or 10K usd, or whatever is acceptable for them, and they were marrying and the man was getting out of jail ! Imagine being forcd to amrry a 40 year old man who raped you when you are 10 years old and have to marry him !!!!
At last, the politicians realized that this is a shame ! Now they are changing the laws, so marriage is not going to get the man out of jail, no matter what !
Makes you wonder, what other kind of archaic laws are ther all around the world who makes the victim punished !!!!!
I am so mad and happy at the same time. Mad that this is 2004 and they still have this law, and happy that at last they are chaging it ! (Of course they want to join that European thingie magicie .....so they had better do some positive changes)
If this doesn't interest you, please just ignore it ? ;) I just wanted to share/show what a country has to go trough before it becomes civilized, and every small thing we take granted is a small battle that has to be fought for us.
