Sounds like more fun!   :)

Unfortunately we'll miss that hike Kev.   :(

We will most likely either still be in Colorado or have moved on into Utah with the PU on these dates (a 5-week NP extravaganza!).
Very cool that my "National Parks Pass" that I bought on 8/06/04 in Yosemite will still be good through the end of 8/05!  $50.00 well spent.   :)

now that we have the Hybrid I'm seriously considering joining this trip.  I just need to Talk to DH and see what he wants to do. I would like to go Thurs.-Tues.
Are we assigned sites now or when we get there? also I couln't tell by the park info do we have full hookups (it list not all sites have sewer) and do they have fire rings or do we have to bring a full enclosed pit ourselves.

you can count me out on this ...DH might give it a go. I'm too fat, old, outta shape and afraid of heights and it'd take me more than a year to train for this.

I'll just stay at camp and make sure the beer stays cold.

Dee, it would be great to have you join us at Yosemite next year, even if you don't join us for a hike up half dome!! ;)

The sites are assigned when you get there, and we are all grouped together. You get to choose who you are beside,(or not beside). All the sites are full hook ups, with water, electricity, sewer, and cable TV, and they all have a fire ring, which consists of some rocks on the ground in a circle. You can always add a few more rocks to the cicrle to increase it's diameter, and have a campfire that you are famous for!!

I think it sounds like a fun place. I'm definately going now to decide for how long..if I get my way (which I usually do ;) ) Thurs-Tues sounds just perfect.

maybe I should bring some extra rocks for the firepit! ;)

This is a nice campground and you can't go wrong with Nick-Neff-Cough.

If you like the high country, Yosemite, warm temps, unfettered fun, and a veritable cornucopia of food and drinks, then you've stumbled upon one of NNC's signature rallies.

This is one of the trifecta of the legendary NNC rallies, Olema (3rd year coming up) being one of them, of course the Mega-Rally in the Summer, and in the fall...the Half Dome Hyjinx (also in its third year).

You'll have a good time.

Dee4J,

As the others have so graciously and correctly filled you in for us there is not much more I can add. When the time gets closer I will ask for sign-ups again and will make a chart to keep track. We will also have to collect a one nights deposit about a month to 2 weeks in advance of the rally. When you come into the preserve, you will check in with the guard and they will tell you where we are camped (probably in Sun Valley) then you just pick the site you want and let the guard know. As for the fire pit, if you don't have a circle of rocks the person we deal with can get you a metal fire pit, or you can bring your own; it's up to you. We will be bringing the tub that Kevin's (6Quigs) friend made so we will have one anyway.

Since we are NACO/Thousand Trails members we are the "Superhosts" for this rally. We don't mind at all because we always come to camp there in August anyway so it is no big deal. You can use all the amenities that perserve offers and it is only 5 miles to the entrance to Yosemite. Everyone has had fund in past years. People just go and do what they want as a family or with a group of NNCers. We just wing it and try to get back for the Saturday night pot-luck at around 6 or 7 p.m. Last year Surfcal brought his Keroke machine and we sang until quiet time of 11:00 p.m. We all had a great time.

So, it would be great to have you join us. The more the merrier!

Dee4J, I don't think you need to worry about getting more CDs becasue Surfcal had a couple of boxes full of them when he brought the machine.   All you will probably need to worry about is bringing any particular songs/groups you want just in case he doesn't have it.Joan

Glad you all are marking your calendars early for this wonderful rally. As Kevin (6Quigs) and the others have said this is a fun rally because there is so much to do.

Boncrab, there is no bear (or beer) issue at this rally. You can bring your dog(s) or cat(s) with no extra charge and they also let us have a campfire.

Will post more info. when the date gets closer.

I have just heard that as of 2/1/05 there is an increase in the cost for non-members to $32 per night.   Last year it was $28.   I won't be able to confirm this increase until the Superhost is back at the park around March or April so we will have to wait and see.

We were not happy with the increase but everything seems to become more expensive these days. Even so with everything that they provide and only 5 miles from Yosemite it's still a good value.
We will let everyone know when we need the deposit. They just changed the policy and we have to pay a reservation fee up front. Before we just gave them a credit card number and setteled up with them 2 days after we were there and everyone had arrived so we had an accurant count. Now it will be at least May when they are fully open to find out how many sites we reserve and how much deposit to pay. It will probably be June at least before we need deposits.
We are looking foward to meeting everyone we have not met before.

Not a problem with us Sal and Joan.  I agree with Dee, it is still cheaper than a lot of other places.  We just made reservations for our family and some friends to go to Shaver Lake and with 8 people on a site it is almost $50 a nite and that is only electric and cable.  We still have to haul water and go dump,:yikes: :( .

Hello Sal & Joan,

Please add us to your list of attendees :) We are working on our summer calendar and want to make a Yosemite Trip this year.  The only change may be if our middle son decides to go to Cub Scout Resident Camp and/or if our older son comes up with a Boy Scout function, then the dates conflict.  Wow, this summer we will have a Boy Scout and 2 Cub Scouts! - Life is busy! :eyecrazy:

Anyway, since we have never been to Yosemite, is it really better to camp outside of the park or would it be better to camp inside (that's "if" I can even reserve a spot)?

Thanks so much!

Michelle

Michelle/PCMom,

Camping in the park or outside...it depends on what you want to do. Our campground is only 5 miles outside the entrance, then it is about 1/2 hour drive down into the valley. A lot of people don't particularly like camping down in the valley because it is crowded, noisy, and costs more. I believe you only get electric and maybe water in the valley where with us you get full hook-up. It's your choice. If you decide to camp in the valley you better make your reservations now as they fill up almost a year in advance. And besides, camping with us would be more fun because you would be with some of the group.

Dee4j/Deidre,

I changed your departure date from Tuesday to Monday (8-8-05).

Joan

Greetings from Azusa!
I've been eyeing this thread for several weeks, and I'd love to join you all.  Being new to pop-uping, I haven't participated in anything yet, although I'm slated to go to a rally in April with SCCampers.  Yosemite is one of my favorite places in the world, so camping near it without the hassles of millions of people sounds great to me.  Plus, there's full hook-ups!   :p  Please put me down for the duration & let me know when & where to send you $$.  I'm looking forward to it!

Laura, welcome to NNC.  My family and I are former SC Campers.  We moved up North in August.  They are a great group of people.  You will enjoy camping with them.  Looking forward to meeting you in August.  Have you given our large mega rally in Pismo Beach (the end of June) any thought?  This is a combined SC Campers and NNC rally.  The best of both worlds

I have been thinking about the Pismo Beach trip.  It's a week after we get out of school, and usually I'm comatose for awhile. :o But, you've given me the nudge I need to put my name down.  My biggest concern for both trips, though, is what to do with my dog if everybody wants to do something.  I'm not inclined to leave her alone in a pop-up.  She probably wouldn't be there when I got back!  So, if you all can tell me what people do with their pooches (leaving at home is NOT an option), I'd appreciate it.  Thanks --

We bring our dog with us too.  She would kill us in our sleep if we left her at home.  We also cannot leave her in the trailer because she will cry and wine.  Last year I took the kids to morro bay and my husband stayed back with the dog.  If it is cool enough outside we will leave her in the car when we go somewhere.  My daughter who is 13 and my 18 year old neice will be with us and they both love dogs so if you want to go somewhere we will watch her for you.  I think one time my family wanted to go somewhere where dogs weren't allowed and we chained her to a tree near where everyone was hanging out and that worked out fine too.

Wow, thanks!  I figured others brought their dogs & knew what to do with them.  I'll be happy to pooch-sit if needed.  When I head to the high country I often like to find a place to just sit & read.  From what I've seen on the TT site it looks like a good place to do just that!  There's also a place in the Valley that I love to go -- not real crowded & right on the river.  Also, perfect for dogs!  I can hardly wait!

Sitting and reading is what I like to do at the campsite too.  My idea of relaxing is if my husband takes the kids fishing and I get to stay back at the campsite by myself with dog.

Don't let your doggy keep you from a rally.  We will help you out.

that's what's really cool about rally's your kids have others to play with so they don't "get Bored" and alot of times it gives us some extra eyes on the kids. Like when the  kids think it's cool to scooter down a steep incline with a nice size crack and sand at the end just large enough to stop the front wheel dead in it's tracks (thanks Scott -still owe ya on that one).

not to mention Marga -G-tas. GREAT FOOD, warm fire. GREAT food, beer, warm fire, karaoke................

I'm in!  I'm in!  Now, you all will have to school me in rally etiquette.  :sombraro:  What kind of stuff will I need to bring that's rally-specific?  How may pot-lucks do I plan for?  Nooo ... I don't need to know it NOW, but it gives me something to be excited about, just thinking about it.
At the Pismo rally, is there usually a fairly equal number of Northern & Southern Calif. folks?  In Yosemite, what's the daytime temp. like?  I don't have AC on my pop-up, but have the option of adding it as part of my sales agreement.  Would it be helpful?  How often do you need it in our fair state?  (Guess this is a rather divergent question -- oh well!)
Looking forward to putting faces on all these names!

I'll tell you for us.

When we purchased our used trailer it had A/C. I wasn't specifically wanting or needing it, but oh well it was there.  We had thought of taking it off and putting in one of those max air fan vents instead.  However, this past summer we were in Utah and it was 103 degrees and I came down with a migraine.  We closed up all the curtains and put on the air, took one of my pills and laid on the goucho.

It got freezing in the trailer even while that ambient temp outside was still over 100.  I'll tell ya, I'm second guessing my decision to sell the air.

OC Campers, I know we discussed last Pismo about possibly selling it to you       :(          , but that trip has caused me change my mind.

That is however, the only time so far that we have used the A/C.  But we didn't camp much in July, and our August trip took us to Colorado and then back through Utah.  This year will be a better test for us.

Bonnie

I would say Pismo is half So cal people and half Nor cal people.  Each rally is a little different.  We usually have a potluck Saturday night and sometimes a Saturday breakfast.  The So Cal folks have a get together breakfast.  Nothing really planned we just bring our food and share with everyone.  The Nor Cal folks enjoy their libations.  We have Towrods home brew and The GSMx2 and the Sammyslaves enjoy the vino.  There is usally a wine and cheese tasting get together

When we lived in Orange County we didn't have air on the popup but I can remember a few times when we wished we had it.  Now that we live in Sacramento where the summers can be hotter than H**L we are seriously thinking of putting it on.  Pismo you probably won't need it.  If I remember last year the weather was beautiful.  The beach is right at the end of the RV park.  Yosemite I am not sure how the weather is.  This will be our first Yosemite rally.

If you want to check out the Pismo rally, look under the Western 2005 rally forum.    You will want to e-mail GSMx2 to sign-up.  Both the Nor Cal and the So Cal people are super.  You make tons of new friends.  Once you attend a rally, it is hard to camp on your own.

Jacqui

my thermostat runs high I use the A/C alot. ask anyone they're all by the fire in pants and jackets saying their cold and I'm still in a T-shirt. the air in my car runs 365....I don't think you'll need it in pismo ..

Sorry all, that I haven't piped in for a while I was home sick with a terrible cold and cough since last Wednesday and I won't use Sal's computer at home.   He has his set up differently than the one I have here at work and I'm afraid I will do something to his, and I can't find the things I want to use as quickly as the one I'm used to here at work.

Glad you can join us Azusatech, we have several teachers in the NNC group so you all can talk work (ha ha).  Anyway, like Jacqui said, we usually have a Saturday morning breakfast get to gether where we just bring what ever and share.   Then Saturday night is the somewhat planned pot-luck.  Again you bring what ever you want to, but this one is a bit more planned only in that people will post what they will bring so we don't get duplicates.   There is always too much food and we have a great time.  As for the dog, when we were in our Pop-up we didn't trust our dogs alone in it either so we were able to leave them home because our neighbor watched them.  But  now that we have the Hybred, we leave them in the trailer.   There are no planned activities at Yosemite becasue people want to do their own thing going into Yosemite, but there is always someone at camp that could watch your dog.  People plan group outings on the spur of the moment (i.e., Hey, we are going to...any one else want to go with us, etc.).  Last year we watched Nick's dog while they went into Yosemite.  There is also a damed up swimming hole by the lodge.  At the back of the resort is a large sandy area which is further down the creek/river which has accesses that you can take you dog to run and play in.  Nick did this several times with his dog last year.  As for the temperature, it usually is around the 70's,  but you never know because last year it got hot (in the high 90's) and we had our air conditioner going almost the whole time.  BUT, then it cools down nicely at night so you may also need your heater.

At Pismo, there is more planned activies because that is such a large group and so many kids they plan several events for everyone.   Much fun.

I will post more when it is closer when I need the deposits and any other information I feel necessary.

You will have fun....

Joan

Thanks for all the info.  It really helps my thoughts between now and then.  I'm so glad to hear there's some sort of swimming hole for the dog.  She absolutely LOVES the water, and just doesn't get enough swimming to satisfy either of us.  About the temps -- sounds like it can go either way.  Guess I'll have to decide whether it's worth spending the $$ to get AC installed.  Since I'm not thinking I'll be spending that much time in the PU during the day, (unless it's naptime, of course!), I might be able to get away without it & use a fan.  Pot-lucks are great fun!  I'll look forward to seeing how I can contribute!

Title: room for us?
Post by: jendak760 on Feb 02, 2005, 12:12 PM
Is there room for us? We were just talking yesterday about going back to Yosemite. And this campground is the place we stayed at the weekend we picked up out trailer last July.

We would love to join the NNC'ers.

jendak760/Jenifer,

SURE, there is always room for more.   Just give me the dates you will be there and I will post later when it's closer to the date when I will need the deposit from everyone.

WELCOME

Greetings from Russ and Donna. Even though I'm registered with your group, when I sign on I'm told that I'm not. I'll get that taken care ASAP. In the mean time, please sign us up for this rally. Yosemite is one of our favorite places in the world, so camping near it without the hassles of millions of people sounds great to us. Please put us down for the duration and let us know when and where to send the $$. We're looking forward to it! Our plan is to come on Thursday and leave on Tuesday. Thanks for putting this together - Russ and Donna

Hi Joan,

One of my friends wants to go on the rally, they are new to camping and don't have a trailer.  Is it alright for them to camp in a tent at Yosemite Lakes?  They could camp on our site if there's enough room.

Thanks,

Are we assigned sites now or when we get there? also I couln't tell by the park info do we have full hookups (it list not all sites have sewer) and do they have fire rings or do we have to bring a full enclosed pit ourselves.
On November 7, 2004 6Quigs replied
QuoteThe sites are assigned when you get there, and we are all grouped together.

So as far as I know, nothing has changed, except for the number of chanels on the cable TV, ;)
So yes Dee, leave the blue Tote at home, (leaves more room for firewood)

No problem Dee, I was just having funwith ya.

Some of the sites in the campground are water and electricity only, and others are for dry camping. Sal & Joan make sure we are in the ones with full hookups. They never let them know exactly which ones we are in until we arrive

Hi Sal,

Thanks for the info.  Please sign up our friends the Ferris family, they would like to have their own camp site.

It was nice to see you, Joan and all the fun people at Olema.  We had a great time, tho we didn't roam around visiting much, maybe it was the cold weather.  We just sat around eating and drinking.  Well, gotta go.  Looking forward to August :)

yeah more families, :D  from your early posts it sounds like your friends only have a tent. you may have to check with Joan. most RV parks only allow tents if they're on the same site as an RV.

I have added the Ferris Family to my list.  If the do indeed have only a tent, I'm sure they can have their own site since they will be with us.  Of course, they can always pitch the tent on one of our sites because they do allow a tent and an RV in one site.   The campground has a designated area for tent camping, but as I said, since they are with us I do not see a problem.   This place is very cooperative and since this will be the 3rd year the group has been there we have gotten to know the Superhose person very well and he lets us basically do what we want.

Hi Joan and Sal!

Do you have room for one more? I just got the go-ahead from my DH this morning, so we'd love to join everyone for this rally. :)

At this point, I think we would be arriving Thurs and leaving Sunday, but Dave and I will talk about it tonight and let you know.

We've never been to Yosemite, other than driving through the Sonora pass to get to Bridgeport from Fresno. This sounds like a wonderful rally!!

Thanks! :D

Lori (Griffsmom), I have added you to my list.

This is great, we have 14 families signed up already!     It is alsways a fun rally because people really enjoy the ease in which they can get to Yosemite without having to camp down in the valley with all the hords of people.

Russ (Russinator), judging from your note you will be back way before I will need a deposit.  I will probably collect in June, but that depends on what the Superhost wants me to do after we touch bases in April or May.  I will post here when I need the deposit.

Bad news Kev--the Half Dome trail will be closed this summer. :( Here's the info from the Yosemite National Park site (http://www.nps.gov/yose/trip/valleyhikes.htm#halfdome):

Half Dome
DifficultyRoundtrip time & distance Wheelchair accessible?Very
Strenuous
10 to 12 hours
17 mi / 27.4 km
No
Start: Happy Isles shuttle bus stop (about a half mile south of Curry Village). This trail will be closed during the day Monday-Thursday from July 6 through October 4, 2005. Visit the Conditions Update for more information.

Many visitors consider this hike to be the ultimate Yosemite hike. The cables that assist hikers up the last 900 ft (274 m) along the side of Half Dome are only up from late May through early October: ascending Half Dome when the cables are not erected is dangerous and strongly discouraged. Do not ascend to the top of Half Dome if thunderclouds are visible anywhere in the sky. Visit the Conditions Update page for the latest information about the Half Dome Cables.

During the summer of 2005 trail work will be continuing on the subdome and shoulder portions of the Half Dome Trail. A closure will be in effect during work hours. Work will most likely begin in July. Keep this in mind when making permit reservations and planning trips. When a complete schedule has been completed we will post it here.

Edit: Found a Conditions Update as of Mar 3, 2005 ( http://www.nps.gov/yose/now/conditions.htm ). It looks like the trail may be open Friday through Sunday for hikers:

During the summer of 2005 trail work will be continuing on the subdome and shoulder portions of the Half Dome Trail. This work will occur from July 6 through October 4 (7:00 am-4:00 pm, Mondays-Thursdays). During this time hikers will be prohibited through this section of trail and there is no trail access to the top of Half Dome. The trail will remain open from Thursday at 4:00 pm through Monday at 7:00 am as well as after 4:00 pm until 7:00 am Monday through Wednesday.

The NACO/Thousand Trails site, and our preserve book, indicates that they have a Volleyball Court, however I don't see one on the preserve map that they give you when you come in.  There is a playground, basketball court, shuffleboard, horseshoes, paddle boats, and mini golf. If we are up in Sun Valley, like last year, there is a large grassy area there that if you brought the net and poles it could be set up there.  That might be where the preserv puts it.  I don't know.  I will try to remember to ask the Superhost when I check in with him in May.

If you guys want to set up a game, go ahead. Sal and I don't plan anything because most of the people leave for the day to go tour Yosemite.

Yosemite Lakes is actually two campgrounds, they have a smaller one across the street that is open to the public. At any  TT that allows group hosting then you come in under the member acting as a Group Host. In either case you do not have to so through any sales presentation.
Hope that answers your question.

I'm not sure how high this campground is, but in the valley it can get into the 90's quite easily during the day.  Nighttime cools off nicely, though.  I've camped many times without AC, and it's bearable.  My major concern this summer is the mosquitos.  Any feel for how they are -- usually?

We don't have a/c either.  We have full-hookups so make sure you bring your fan.  This will be our first camping trip to Yosemite.  We have camped in Bridgeport (7,000 elevation) at this time of year and it is in the 80's during the day and gets into the high 40's-low 50's at night.  Unfortunately, I don't know what elevation Yosemite Lakes is at.

The elevation is 3,600 ft. But you can't go by that as we have had temps from the 90s during the day to 40s at night to 50s day and night. Bring a good fan a heater and some water misters if you have them. It is cooler in the Valley.
You can always hide out at the Lake , Clubhouse or in the Valley if it becomes too hot. They have redesigned the website so the info is now here.

We have had a family house in Twain Harte about an hour from here. Our elevation is 4000'. During August high 80's to 90's is not unusual. I used to do summer theatre in Columbia SP which is about 1100' and 90's to low 100's is not unusual. I like the idea about misters.

I also worked in the Yosemite high country during college. I prefer the high country to the valley, but if you've never been to the valley, it's a must. I qualify for a Golden Eagle pass this year.

Have a great weekend,
Moose

We have camped at Yosemite without Air Conditioning in our Popup, and it was not an issue.
Definetly bring your fans, and solar covers for the bunk ends.
It always cools down at night, so sleeping was not a problem.
Even though we have Air Conditioning in our hybrid, I did not spend much time inside last year, spent most of the time outside playing, or taking the kids to the swimming hole to cool off.
I was not aware of many mosquitios either.

Thanks for all of your input about the weather!  After talking with DH, it sounds like a go for us. Our two DS will be flying back from BSA Jamboree in Virginia later that week, so we'd have to drive up on Friday morning and head home on Sunday.  So, go ahead and sign us up Sal.  If something comes up, we'll let you know in advance.  Thanks again!
P.S. We look forward to meeting many of you at the Pismo Rally!

Just curious (okay, maybe just afraid...)

Has this TT Preserve had any problems with bears?  I've heard a lot about bear problems in Yosemite, but I'm wondering if the potential is less with camping in this preserve since it's a private park?

Lori,

Nope, as far as we know they have never had a problem.  They don't even have the bear-proof garbage cans (HA!) and storage lockers like they do in the valley.    We have been going there for 5-6 years now and have never had a problem.

You are allowed one tent on your site in addition to your trailer, just dont park next to me.:) I have seen 4 tents on one site but they had no trailer and were all confined to the site. I'll post a list when I wake up in the morning.

Here is the list so far, if you are not on it or have a question mark behind your name you need to confirm with us if you plan to attend.  We reserved 15 sites last year but we can get the full 25 if we need them and let them know early enough. Also they changed the policy this year and will charge me for the reservations, instead of just accepting my credit card # and paying when everyone has shown up. I will not be floating that much money on my card and paying interest on it so we will need the deposits this year, sorry.

you can put them next to us..matter of fact..I should be as far away from you as possible..my campsite ends up the Yu-gi-Oh arena by day  :yikes: and campfire hangout by night :!  actually it makes it easier for me to keep track of my kids :eyecrazy:

at Vail we had all 7 kids watching incredables in our trailer..it was cool all the kids getting along inside while the adults chit-chat in front of the fire sipping on cocktails :D

Actually I have been known to stay up late and get up at 4am for coffee by the fire. Depends on how my health is at the time.:(  On the other hand I have been known to stay in the trailer the whole trip and watch DVDs on the satellite system. Nope no problem, they are not even open yet, not until the snow melt and they can get in. Then we have to wait until the group coordinator gets there and gives us a call. We reserved 15 sites last year because that is the most we have ever used and the change in policy this year, but we can reserve up to 25. At least one other family is coming and our reservations do not count against the 25. So as soon as we know something one of us will post it. The attendance list was more to confirm dates since it is so far away, and peoples plans do change.

I just talked to the new Superhost Coordinator, Charlotte.  Walt, the person who was the Coordinator last year has retired.  We are confirmed for our sites and they have us (Sal & Joan) coming in on August 3rd and everyone else arriving the 4th or 5th; departing by Tuesday the 9th.  The fee has gone up to $32 per night (RPI Members is $8 per night; no fee for dogs/cats).  I will need your 1 night deposits and date confirmatin by July 1 or sooner because they will charge my credit card for $500 deposit around the first part of July.   Please put your "handle or board" name on your check when you send it to us.

Our address is on the roster that G-Wiz has prepared, but if you don't have it, e-mail me or Sal and we will send it to you.

Things are moving along now so hope to have more of you sign up.  This is always a fun rally.

Please make the checks payable to me.  Also, please, put your board name on the check so I don't get people confused.   If you are using G's last list, I believe she misspelled our City name.  It should be North Highlands, CA  95660.

Rod/Towrod, I'll add another site for your friends.  I'll need their name for the list because I Fax or e-mail a copy of the list to the Superhost, who in turn gives a copy to the guard who uses it to check in people when they arrive.

I would rather take a trip to Yosemite than visit Florida in August, but you gotta do what ya gotta do.

Dee4j,

So you don't worry, I have been approved by Kaiser to get the Gastric By-Pass Surgery and yesterday we had to go to So. SF for the all day Orientation. Boy, what a long day! We left at 5:30 am to get there for the 8:30 class and I was 10 minutes late, then when the class was over we left at 3:45 and didn't get home until 6:45. I'm tired today, but how I have all the tools to start this journey and life change. Since they want us to start the "new way of eating" as soon as we finish reading all the material they gave us, I might be skinnier by the time I see all of you.

Sal was correct, yes the address is still the same, except I think there was a typo for our city name. It should be North Highlands, CA 95660.

Look forward to seeing you all soon. Will post more the middle of next month.

Joan,
Best of luck with the surgery. We have 2 friends who've had the surgery and are doing well. I've been working on my weight and through diet and exercise I've lost over 20 pounds and over 3 inches. Now my clothes are too big. Now that's a nice problem you'll have also.

Joan, best of luck with the surgery.  I also know a couple people who have had it and they are "new" people.  It is definately a life change!!  See you in 6 weeks.

Hey, I guess I'm stealing our own thread!!!

Anyway, I have inspiration here at work.  One of the ladies in our office had it done about 6 months ago and has lost around 125 lbs.   She is my inspiration because her and I are the same height and close to the same weight and she looks wonderful.  Every time I see her she is smaller.  I'm not even purchasing any new clothing or shoes because I'm going to have to give them all away.  I specifically asked her if she lost anything in her feet and she has lost 1-2 shoe sizes!    Another thing to look forward to....new clothes and shoes!   Thanks for all the encouragement.

His are the ones that most folks here use.

I was in Columbia myself this past week, and I enjoyed that it had cooled down a little this year.  Did you get to the Parade?

I have several pictures on my webshots page if you missed it.

Ok, I have my gizmo ordered.  Any good ideas on fans for inside the trailer?  I have two fans that came with the pop up but they don't do a thing.  What type of fan would be good?  Do they sell small portable ac?  $900.00 is to steep for me to put in a ac this season.

Post by: Calstate361 on Jul 14, 2005, 08:31 AM
Patrina,

When we first had our PU we didn't have AC and took a trip to Montana.  It was seriously hot an humid.  We went to Billings (to Wally World) and purchased a stand up fan.   It worked well and we could put it outside also.  You could do that.  Sal said he saw one that could be used on a table top or as a stand, at OSCH (sp? Orchard Supply).   Since we will have full hook-up you won't need to worry about power, however adding extra stuff might blow the circuit in the PU so Sal always brings a heavy duty extension cord to plug directly into the power box and run the cord through the bunk end.   Sal also brings a Y adapter for the water hook up so he can hook up the water to one side and either leave the other open, so I can get the dogs water, or hooks up another hose to use for something else.  Last year, at this rally, he ran a line of misters around the awning.  It sure cooled the area down.  It was almost too much because we got a little wet.  I don't know if you can still find them any more, but we also had a single/individual one that was not as strong.  It was curvey shaped and you hooked the hose directly on to it.  Now if you want to spend $50+ you can purchase a mister fan.  That way you can use it outside during the day and inside, without the water, at night.   It does cool down there at night so you might not need it at night.  Last year it did get into the 90's so the days are warm, but cooled down to the 50s at night.  There is a swimming hole and a creek/small river running through the campground that you can use, and the clubhouses have AC.  You can do what ever you feel comfortable with.

Now is the time to start the un-lists for Saturday's Breakfast and Dinner/pot-luck. Please post what you will bring. Remember this place is outside a very small town and the nearest civilizaton is about 1-1/2 hr. drive back down Priest Grade! So, plan well. There is a small store at the top of the hill where you turn into the preserve, but they don't carry much and they are expensive.

I think I will bring some fresh melons for breakfast and a large tossed green salad for the pot-luck.

I tell people this every year that there is a very nice fruit stand (one of the first) just outside Manteca at the corner, right side and at a light, of Hwy. 120 (the road you will be on) and Jack Towne Road. They have a nice large parking area so there is no problem with parking. They have a nice selection of fruits and vegetables, olives, chutneys, salsas, dried fruits, nuts, some candy, etc. We stop there both going and coming home. I will probably pick up the melons there. There are other fruit stands along the way, but the parking is not as good and they don't have the selection this one does.

Then going through Oakdale where 120 turns left, at the turn is a small park, on the right side, by the Hershey's Chocolate Factory. It would be a good place to let the kids out for a bit and to stretch the legs.

Manteca (edited..ooops, it's Oakdale) is about the last place to get cheaper gas. Just before you hit the end of town there is an ARCO on the right side, at a light, across from a small Mall. We usually gas up there on the way back.

If anyone has any other questions, please ask.

We have the Fantastic Fan and we love it. It puts out a lot of air. I'll be going to the Kern River area tomorrow and it's expected to be between 98 and 107. It'll only get down to the low 60's in the early morning hours so will be using the fan. One reason I like it is that when we're dry camping, it uses very little juice.

FYI, it's Oakdale not Oakhurst. We have a house in Twain Harte and we drove through Manteca and Escalon and Oakdale so many times I have all the curves memorized.

I may lead the SoCal group a different way. When we go to Twain Harte, I take J59 out of Merced and end up on 108 before the Yosemite turn off. There is another way that may allow us to miss 108. I'll call TT to get their opinion.

Oakdale is where you want to gas up, it's the last place for cheaper gas before you get to the park.
As far as the pot luck Joan and I were both raised to let people know what you are bringing, that is especially true for this campout. You aren't going to make a quick trip down the road to the local Safeway. It's a three hour round trip including going down and back up Priest Grade again! Besides we are the hosts and this is the way we do it!!
Don't let Priest Grade worry you, there are lots bigger rigs take it than we have. Besides we make it and I travel overloaded. Make sure all your fluids are Full!!! If anyone is afraid of heights don't let them sit on the passenger side.
I will be posting directions later today when I get done with some concrete work.

A Fantastic Fan mounts where the AC does in the roof, so if you plan on adding AC it is a waste of money. They do work great though we have one in our popup. The stand fan I saw at OSH so Sears should have it also.
The mister fan I saw on the web someplace and don't remember where?

As for the mister that went around the awning, Sal got it at Home Depot last year.  It is the kind that goes around your patio.  Then you have to figure out how to hang it.  You can use those S hooks or Sal used some plastic clips (like laundry clothespins) and attached a plastic tie to the clip to run the mister hose through.

Do we start the countdown yet?    I can't wait.

It is a long long way!!! Last year we lost 3 tires and after we finally got there late the Television blew up. 2 hrs. round trip to Wally World:mad:
There was no place in Groveland to buy one.
Speaking of TV's the reception sucks, almost no TV and zilch for cell phones.
There are pay phones in the campground, and you can go in to Yosemite for cell on top of the peaks. If you want or need tv bring a dish or tall external antenna. No, no climbing into my trailer to watch on my dish.

Here are the directions from the north.
In MANTECA Turn onto SR-120
At Jack Tone Rd. is the fruit stand Joan mentioned.
If you are coming from the south on 99 take Jack Tone Rd. if you are not worried about Priest Grade.
Continue on 120.
In Oakdale when you get to the 4 way stop light you will see the park. Turn left. When you see the shopping center on the left, there is an Arco station on the right. The is the last chance for semi-reasonable priced gas.
Continue on 120 East.
When you get to Priest Grade do not take Old Priest Grade!!! It is straight down and back up.
Stay on Hwy 120 at Yosemite Junction, and continue 18 miles past Groveland to the preserve on your right.
At the entrance there is an Exxon station. This is the camp store also.
Go down the hill to the stop. Turn right. The check in is on the left about a long block forward. Give the guard your real name and tell them your with the popup group. So far we are scheduled to be to the right side of the guard shack.
If any thing changes or there are road construction updates I will post them on Wed night so check the board before you leave.

So bring your awnings, solar covers, or what have you.
Also we will have 2 very low use E-Z UPs for sale with us.
One was used at Olema 2 times. The other was used only 4 times.
They are both 8X8 size and we want $50 ea for them.
Were originally $90 ea.

NO SHADE??  Are there any trees nearby?  I don't do very well in the sun.:( .  Are the sites paved or dirt?

Does the cg allow fires  or do we need to bring our portable fire pits?  Sorry about all the questions.

I think we will be making DO chicken merlot.  Breakfast has to be donuts (like I have a choice on this one:D )

Nope no shade. There is a chance that we will be moved. One year we were put in a regular loop with lawn and trees. Everyone please remember that this is a membership campground and they have to save the best spots for members. If there are not a lot of reservations then they could move us. For a lot of people this is the last free weekend before school starts and so we never know how full they will be. To make it easy to find us, just look for my black pickup with the mural on the side of the shell. There is shade over yonder a ways ;)  next to the playground and golf. The best bet is an ez-up and some misters. If you plan on being in Yosemite during the day it is a lot cooler in the park. Or get friendly with someone with a big awning and misters.:) The Antelope Wallmart has single misters out by the garden dept. cash registers. We have a few of them and they work great. Fires are allowed and if there is no pit at your site they will bring you one. I just bring our own since it's up off the ground. I don't remember how much firewood is since I'm cheep and bring my own. I have seen a place up the road with a sign out for wood closer to Yosemite. I have no idea if they deliver. Dogs are free the leash rules apply. The sites are either gravel or dirt. It depends on how much they have been used this season.

I do believe they allow fires..always my first question...and don't worry about shade..we have my awning and A/C..Chris will probably be at our site anyway..and you know me "the more the merrier" (the fish squad will prevail)

Well, we're still very excited for this rally, but with the recent posts about no shade and the need for misters, I am starting to get a bit worried as well. Exactly how hot do you think it will be? :yikes: I'm not concerned for myself, but I'm worried for my mom (79 y/o) and Griffy (4 y/o). We don't have a/c in our camper. I've also never camped anywhere where I couldn't make a daily grocery and/or Wal-Mart run. You mean I'm going to have to plan my meals ahead of time!!! Yikes!! This will be a first for me! :eyecrazy: ;) Oh well, the fruit stand sounds wonderful!

I think we'll make monkey rolls for the breakfast potluck. I'm still trying to figure out what we'll make for dinner...maybe tamale pie and a cinnamon-apple spice cake cobbler?

Sal and Joan--is there a check-in time? If we arrive before that check-in time, will TT let us in early?

Moose and So Cal-ers--what is the route you suggest to get to the cg? Do we need to avoid Priest Grade like in Sal's post? Also, how long is the drive (approximately) in terms of time? What time is everyone planning on leaving SoCal? Is there a convoy in the works? (I'm feeling inquisitive today :p )

Lori..If it's too hot for Mom she can have the extra bunk in our trailer ..I hate the heat so you'll probably find me in my TT with a beer with Jacquai and her margarita :!   so maybe it will be how many ADULTS can we fit in Dee's trailer this time :p

and as far as meals..I always seem to bring enough food for 2 weeks so if you need something you can shop at Dee's pantry

aren't we caravaning up together with moose ??? I have the rolling kitchen/bathroom  we'll talk at O'neill

Ok lets try this again for some reason the first post did not show up?
The heat is no big deal we have not lost anyone in 3 years. There is shade by the playground and mini golf course. Also you have full use of the place just like a member. That includes the air conditioned lodge with big screen tv and satellite.
There are a couple of stores in Groveland but the prices won't be like your local Ralphs. Wallmart is a 3 hr. round trip.
Remember the fruit stand is before Priest Grade. It makes a nice rest stop as they have a line of portapotties by the picknick area.
Check in is 12 noon I think? But don't worry we will be there the day before and have it set up, besides the sites are reserved and will have signs on them saying so. I have never been made to wait at any TT park!
The family lodge has all sorts of toys for the kids. Don't forget the swimming hole on the river.

Hi Sal,

I'm sorry to say that me, Dave and Emily won't be able to make it this year.  My in-laws seem to have gotten the dates we were available for a visit mixed up.  They'll be visiting us Aug 5th, the only weekend in Aug we "weren't" available.  Grandma is flying in from Florida too, so we can't change it.  We'll sure miss all of you.  I was looking forward to seeing everyone and taking our inflatable kayak in the river.  Bummer!

Also, the Ferris family has to cancel as well.  Their son is in the Navy's Sea Cadets program and has some sort of activity he has to attend.

Hope yall have a wonderful time.  Chances are this heat wave will end before then.  Even if it doesn't you'll all have fun, the swimming hole is great and it was fun just to walk up and down the river, it was only about 1 to 2 ft deep.  Well, take care.

Title: SoCal Route
Post by: oldmoose on Jul 18, 2005, 11:22 PM
I was too busy today to call TT for info. I hope we can caravan early on Thursday. It's my suggestion we meet at the rest stop at the top of I5 at an agreed upon time. My usual route to get to our house near where we're going is to go I5 to Hwy 99. In Merced we jump off at G St and meet up with J59. The rest of the route will depend on what TT says. I will call tomorrow. I will top off the gas in Merced. There is an Albertsons and a big Railly's (sp) near gas. I can only go about 200 miles before I need gas. The temps though the valley will probably be in 100's depending on when everyone can leave. Friday I left here at 6:30 AM to go to Kernville and it was 89 2 hours later near Bakersfield. It takes us about 6 hours to get to our house in Twain Harte from Thousand Oaks. Depending on how many potty stops are needed I figure 6-7 hours.

More later

the will have plenty to do and if it's too hot they can read a book (what a concept) or play a game or Yu-Gi-oh..something to stimulate the brain instead of having it sucked dry by video games..I'm sure Kevin would love to challenge Dave in another game of Dominoes

Hey all, don't sweat (pun intended) about the daily temperaturs. If I remember correctly, last year it got up to 98, but the evenings cool down nicely so you can sleep. Also, other games the kids can play are volleyball, horeshoes, miniture golf, basket ball, and the family lodge has games and there is usually a puzzle on one of the tables that people keep adding to, a pool table (with a parent, 25 cents per game so bring quarters), and a playground. So there will be plenty for the kids to do, besides spending most of the time at the swimming hole. I don't remember, but I think you can rent paddle boats also. It's not any worse than the temperatures in the LA area.

Darcamps and Ferris Family, sorry you can't make it this time. I will try to get your deposits back but won't be able to find out until we get there. Just mark you calendar for next year, first weekend in August.

Post by: oldmoose on Jul 19, 2005, 02:11 PM
Here is the way I'm planning to go to Yosemite Lakes.

I travel most of this route many times each year and the ranger at YL said this is how he came up in his 34' rig. I5 to Hwy 99. In Merced take "G" St. and turn right. G St. will eventually deadend into J59. We'll take J59 to 132 east to Coulterville. In Coulterville we'll go north on Hwy 49 to Hwy 120 where we'll turn right and proceed to YL. We'll avoid the old Priest Grade. It's been years since I've driven 120. Growing up, we used to go to Yosemite all the time and after I got my license, it was a treat to drive. I even spent 2 years working in the high country, but they were not able to open them this year.

OK SOCal'ers, how to we get together to caravan. We can leave at any time on Thursday.

I'm up for anytime...I don't work Wed nite so early am is fine :morning:  but here's the deal. LA TRAFFIC  :banghead:  :swear:  so either we need to leave here by like 6 am or wait until 10am..I go the 57 N to 210 to the 5N it's a little longer miles wise but can be much faster the the 5N. I can make to Tragic mountain in about 1 to 1 1/2 hour...so I'm leaving the time decision to you and Lori..I'll just be there. I may even get a wild hair and stay at that place in Valencia Wed nite...where are we meeting exactly??

The deposit is a possibility. It depends on How uptight they are going to be this year. In years past it was no problem, but that was with a different host coordinator. But we can't find out until we get there.
As far as the rest of the money yes. Joan might have used it to pay deposits for some late payers and if so we will get it back at the rally. If not Joan will send it to you. I'm sure she will let you know tomorrow.
But we really know your afraid of the heat and just want to stay home with your AC.:frosty:

Hey - OldMoose. I'm the same age as you - 62 years young. So you played with the grandkids today in hot [102*] Ft Collins. I played with my grandkids today too. We went to the beach where it was a nice 75*. We paddled our surfboards out into the ocean and rode a few waves back in. Then, like you, I enjoyed a brew - maybe 2 or three. Now I'm home, the grandkids are at their home and I'm all sunburnt but it was a good day. I'm looking forward to meeting you [and the rest of the gang] at Yosemite in a week or so - Russ

If I can get some other parents to trust me with their kids for 4 days, I've told my boys they could each bring a friend. So there may also be a 13 and another 8 year old. Have to see how that goes.

Getting excited, I feel like a kid myself. Can't tell whose more excited around here, mom or the boys.

Keep Cool Petrina
Petrina I just came back from OSH and they had a mister fan. Since they are owned by Sears, they should have it also. I did not get a chance to look at it, it is too hot today and they had them by the front door with no water hooked up. If you still need one there you go.

Quote from: RussinatorHey - OldMoose.
Russ it sounds like you had a great time at the beach. Yesterday we took our oldest grandson to see Peter Pan. It was his first time to see a play. We go to the water park today, so will take the sunscreen so no sunburn. Cooler today. Low 90's.

I look forward to meeting you next week and tipping a couple. I worked in the Yosemite high country in the early 60's. Didn't want to work in the valley with the smog and lots of people. If I have time I want to take my wife to Tuolumne Meadows where I worked one year.

See you and everyone else in a little over a week.

Sal, Joan and everyone. I have some sad news - Donna and I have to back out of the rally. On Monday, July 18th, I had ear surgery. I told the surgeon before scheduling the surgery about the Yosemite trip and he said that it wouldn't be a problem. I saw him this afternoon and today [he said] that my recovery was going in the right direction but it was going shower than it should and that if I took my ear to the Yosemite area that the altitude would produce pressure in the ear, and due to the swelling inside the ear, I would be in a lot of pain and most likely permanent damage would occur. I feel really bad about backing out of the rally, Please let my know if you need anymore money - after all I did reserve a spot for five nights and only sent you a deposit. If anyone is interested in the problem I had and the reason I needed surgery you can read about it at: http://www.faldoc.co.uk/surfers_ear.htm

That sounds like it would be painful at the altitudes you would be hitting.
Sorry you cant make it but your hearing is a lot more important.
I suffer some hearing loss from the police academy and it is a royal pain in the butt. Don't despair there is always next year.

Russ sorry you won't be able to make it. I just got hearing aids last week and I didn't know what sounds I was missing. Hope to meet you at one of the SoCal outings. The temps here dropped dramatically from a day ago. It's 9 AM and 59 degrees here in Fort Collins, CO. We go home tonight. I'll miss the morning wake up by our oldest grandson. No more Good Morning Pooh & Pop Pop. Oh well, life moves on and we're looking forward to next week.

Hello Moose. I was looking forward to meeting you and the rest of the group but I think the smart thing to do is to listen to my doctor and follow his advice. About a month ago I was tested for hearing aids and ordered them. Naturally, right after my ear surgery the hearing aid place called saying the insurance company had okayed the aids and I needed to come in to be fitted. After telling them about my surgery we decided it was best to wait on the fitting until the swelling went away and the packing material was out of my ear [that should be in 2 weeks]. I can't wait to get the packing taken out of my left ear so I can hear in both ears again. In addition to that, I can't wait to get the hearing aids - to see what sounds I've been missing out on for several years now. In about two weeks this entire ordeal will be nothing but a bad memory, we can get back to camping and life in general. What are you doing in Fort Collins? Don't you live in Thousand Oaks? Please forget those questions, I just read the end of your post, where you said you are returning home tonight - have a safe trip. Yes, we will have to do a SoCal camping thing and talk in person, rather than on the Internet - sometime soon.

Thanks for the up date on the cost of fan.  Owee!! 84.00 !!  My kids have been home from school and sucking all my extra money out of me!!  May be with some luck I will go in and it will be on sale or some thing.   I am so exhited!!  I can't wait to get out of Hollister!!  I will have all my kids with me so this should be fun.  Are there mountan lion up there in yosomite or bears?   I was in columbia and a mountian lion jumped in the back of my truck!!  He didn't do much to any thing but left paw prints and a few scratches on the liner of my bed of the truck.  I talk to some locals and they did say thay have a few mountain lions in the area but there are so many dear abround they have never been a problem.   Yikes!!  Ok that freeked me out.  What do you do or bring to protect your self from wild animals?

Petrina, the only wild thing you will encounter on this trip might be drunk campers and rude people in the valley.   We have never had a problem with bears at Yosemite Lakes, in fact, they don't even have bear proof garbage cans.  We might get a skunk or racoon, so they say, but we have never had any problem and we have been going there every year in August for about 5-6 years now.  So not to worry.  They do have bears down in the Yosemite Valley so I guess that is why they don't bother coming where we are.  They get all the extra food they want down there.

The only animals I have ever seen there in 8 years are squirrels, birds and an occasional ripped camper. Plus the everywhere I go ant's. The rangers take care of the drunks and spray takes care of the ant's, and skeeters.

They are usually not bad in the campground. I just use my normal spray. Deet 100%, because I'm old arrogant and I picked some up out of State cheep. It has no health effects on me with all my health problems so I use it.
So just bring you normal spray, they are not bad, Joan uses Avon Skin So Soft
which I think is useless.

In all the years we have been going there we have only had problems with one drunk. Took care of that myself!!!
As far as things to do as a group? We are freewheeling Wagon-masters, and will not go into Yosemite until everyone leaves. We stay away until all the weekend tourists leave.:) So if you have any ideas post them and see if anyone responds.
As far as I know only the two potlucks are planed.

Title:
Post by: Calstate361 on Jul 27, 2005, 01:19 PM
We really don't plan anything because people like to go to Yosemite and just do anything they want during the day.  I know last year Kevin and Margaret (6Quigs) were busy taking their kids to the swimming hole, playing miniture golf, horseshoes, etc.  So there is plenty to do for the kids right at the campground.

We just bring whatever food out for breakfast and eat with each other, if you like.  So far we have people bringing: melons, breakfast burritos, muffins, and breakfast rolls. As for the dinner pot-luck, we try to get together around 6:00, but it tends to move toward 7:00.  It's all a matter of when people get their stuff together.  The campground has a large area that has tables and is covered that we can use, or like last year, the men can grab some of those tables and put them together between one of the sites.  We can decide that there.  As for what people are brining for the pot-luck so far:  tossed salad, spaghetti & meatballs, brushetta, and teriyaki chicken.  So, you can bring just about anything.  It really doesn't matter, we always end up with too much food anyway.

If you like fires, bring wood.  If I remember correctly, last year the campground sold bundles for about $7.00 (at the Ranger Station) and they were not very big.  Dee would probably burn that up just getting it lit!

Our youngest is 4 (7/31) so we will not be attempted any major hikes but do hope to visit the valley on Saturday - probably will do bridal veil falls, yosemite falls and take a hike to mirror lake.

We will bring Shrimp Scampi with Penne Pasta to the Dinner Potluck on Saturday.

Post by: oldmoose on Jul 28, 2005, 12:57 PM
Based on the information that was provided, we will meet at 8:30 AM at the Lebec rest stop just after the crest of I5. It will take us about 1-1/2-1/3/4 hours to get there from Thousand Oaks. We can plan the rest of the trip from there. I need to refuel about every 200 miles. There are a couple of gas stations in Lebec-a Chevron and a generic. Don't remeber if there's another one there. I would suggest we also use the GRS radio's. I suggest we have a primary channel and 2 alternates in case someone is using one. I suggest the primary channel to be 4 then 7 and then come 11.:)  I do not have the latest radios that split channels. In case of problems my cell number is 805-341-4333.

For Saturday night we're doing one of Paula's Mom's favorites called Chicken ada Lucy. Not sure about spelling, but love the casserole. I'll probably make my Chocoholics Cake. Paula make experiment with a dessert also. Still figuring out the breakfast dish.

We're ready to go camping.

Post by: oldmoose on Jul 28, 2005, 01:02 PM
In case there's a problem on the grapevine like this morning, we'll have to take the I14 to Mojave and then 58 to Bakersfield. I've done this route before with and without the trailer. If this is necessary, we'll contact via cell for a meeting location. I hope we don't have to use this option, but the way the grapevine has had problems this summer, I'm not holding my breath.

I have a set of radios with split channels Don't know if Lori has any or not but my set & your set will cover us. I think they are doing construction on the grapevine if I recall from my big trip in June.  If I leave at 6 am is that going to be enough time??? it should only take me 1 hr to 1/2  to get to Magic Mountain. I can't remember how much farther it is from Valencia.

Petrina, you will be happy to know that most of the spaces where we will be, can be "drive through", even though they are not necessarily set up that way. Because there are no trees, you just have to watch out for the power and water. SOOOOO, maybe we won't get to laugh at you, unless you decide to back in anyway.;)

Since we will be there already, we will see you checking in with the Ranger because we will be sitting on the end watching everyone coming in. We will direct traffic when you get there. The checking in can get rather lengthy because a lot of the time the Ranger is a volunteer and might not know what they are doing very well.

You will be able to see us because once you turn onto the street to the campgroung (by the gas station/store) you will go down a simi-long hill; at the bottom you will come to a stop sign, you will be facing the Family Lodge (on the left) and the Adult Lodge (on the right); turn right and look to the left, you will see a kiosk (Ranger Station) and you will have to drive a little bit to turn left to get to it.  Once you turn left look to your right and you will see us parked on the very end on the other side of the bushes.  Look for Sal's black truck with the mountian scene painted on the side of the shell, and our Hybred.

REMINDER: When checking in tell them you are with the Superhost group under Lutz-Vasquez. They keep the Superhost guest list seperate from the membership reservations. Also, REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR EASY-UPS and anything you want to help you keep cool. Last year it got up to 97, but it wasn't too bad in the shade. AND, don't forget to stop at that great fruit stand at the corner of 120 and Jack Towne Road. It's on the right side just before the light just out of Manteca (if you are coming that way).

coorect me if I'm wrong...if a spoon that was in a dish with peanuts gets put in a dish w/o peanuts doesn't it contaminate that the other dish???
Title:
Post by: oldmoose on Jul 29, 2005, 10:11 AM
You're right that it would contaminate the other dish. When we were in Colorado last week, we went to a Mongolian BBQ. They had a sign at the grill that if you had any allergy's to let them know. After Paula told them, they pulled out a clean grill pad, cleaned the grill and used separate tools to cook her dish.

If there is a peanut dish at a pot luck, she won't have anything close to it or pass all together. And me who loves any form of peanuts. Oh well!.

Pantry items and Griff's and my clothes are all packed.  Refrigerated food gets packed Thursday morning.  Dave brings thE PU home tonight so I can get stuff into it.  Nana bought Griffin his very first fishing pole and tackle box, and he's excited to fish for "treasure."  :)

We're leaving home at about 5:30 to meet the So Cal contingency at the rest stop at Lebec around 8:30 a.m. on Thursday morning.

Boy am I behind. We have not even finished our menu let alone buy food. We buy tonight and pack tomorrow pm. I had a meeting with my brother yesterday and he's taking 4 of his wife's nephews and a girlfriend backpacking out of Tuolumne Meadows on Friday morning. He asked if I would have the coffee ready at 7:30 as they drove by. I told him I would, but knowing those kids, it may be a battle getting them up early. He's an avid backpacker and rock climber. He's done El Capitan 3 times and Half Dome once. He loves it, but I'll keep my feet grounded.

Looking forward to Thursday.

Sal, maybe you know.  Because TT is a private preserve, do adults need fishing licenses?

You may want to let your brother know that if he (or the kids) snoozes, he loses.  You are going to be leaving the cg by 8:30--that's the morning we have our tour in the valley. :)

Yes all fishing conforms to Fish & Game rules. So no park permits, but you do need a license if you are an adult.

How long does it take to get into the Valley from the campground?  Yosemite Lodge offers an early morning photo walk, hosted by a retired Kodak photographer.  Most of the promo material that Yosemite puts out has pics taken by them.  I did one years ago, before digital, and would love to see what they have to say & share about shooting with the new cameras.  If I remember right, the walk started around 7:00.  Pretty early, but I'd like to go.  Any other takers?

Thast sounds like a cool tour, Laura.  We'll have to take a pass; my mom just can't do the walking.  We're taking an open air tram tour of Yosemite Valley on Fridfay morning which I'm looking forward to.  The guy I spoke with at the Yosemite Lodge told me to allow an hour to an hour and a half to get there from Groveland.  But then, I can't imagine there'll be a lot of traffic on the road at 6:00 a.m., so maybe you'll only have to allow for 30-45 minutes.     When Griffin gets older, I want to do a number of the hiking tours and if we can time it just right, especially the moonlight tour.

Lori-

You will enjoy the tram.  We took it when we were there right before Memorial Day.  Matthew really enjoyed it.  I think it is well worth the $$$.  Unfortunately I can't remember how long it took us to go from Groveland to the Valley floor (We drove this way on our way to our rented cabin) .  I believe it is 22 miles but they are twisty and curvy miles.  The worst part is trying to find a parking space on the valley floor.  Figure a thousand cars trying to park in a hundred parking spaces.  If your mom has a handicap plaquard bring it with you!!

Hour and a half, huh?  Well, I'll just call before I commit.   :D  That being said, I'm still headed into the valley.  I hear the falls are at an all-time high.  Even though it's late in the summer (kind of), there should still be lots of water.  As far as walking with your mom, Lori, there are great paved paths to places like Yosemite Falls & the nature center at Happy Isles.  A tram will take you close to both of them.  Honestly, Yosemite is one of my favorite places in the whole world -- crowds or not.

See you Thursday in Lebec!

Laura,
I have to agree--Yosemite is an absolutely amazing place.  The last time we were there was around 5 years ago so we are definitely due for a trip..

Have a fantastic weekend campers.  We are off to Pismo tomorrow for a non-camping vacation with the clan.  Happy trails everyone!

I'm not workiing tomorrow, so it's off to the gym about 5:45, hen home, then blood test, then car wash, then shop and of course then pack. ave to remember to get the cherry tomatoes & jalapeno's from the back yard. For the potluck Paula's doing the main DO and I'll be making my chocoholics cake. Sunday night Paula's refining her Hershey's chocolate cake. Oh damn, more chocolate.:D

An hour and a half is right. Forget the time, for a lot of people this is the last weekend before school. Be sure anyone who has a handicapped plate, bring it with you. It makes it free to enter the park.
Tomorrow when we get there I will post if there are any traffic delays for the route we are taking.

Okay, food's packed, dog bed in, clothes almost done, camera & other "toys" loaded, and house cleaned today (NOT by me, thankfully!) -- even had time to go to the beach (remember, it's an hour drive each way for me)!  Got myself a laptop, and just because I can, I'm bringing it.   :D  Will be getting up at 5 tomorrow to hook up, stop in La Crescenta for some "Skin so Soft", and then to Lebec.  Boy, sure hope I don't miss that off-ramp!  This is going to be fun!

We got home shortly before 10 PM and we were unpacked and in bed about 45 minutes later. Also found I had 2 bad tires at the campground. I was glad I had my air compressor as both mine and Lori's spare tire were almost a 0 pounds. Thanks to borrowing Griffsdad's spare, I was able to safely make it to the tire store. The irony is we eventually caught up to Diedre and Lori as they pulled on from a rest stop. It made the rest of the trip more enjoyable. More info later and have to sort the pics.

We had such a great time. Sure hope I dont have to wait until June to camp with ya'll again.

I'm already looking at walkie talkies to decide which ones I want to get, that was so much fun.  Mom got to play with a toy for awhile and I hogged it from the kids.  Caravaning is so much fun.

How were Dan's knuckles on the way home... :yikes:  :yikes:  :yikes:

We leave Tuesday the 16th for a twelve day trip, spending one day a disneylay, about 3 days at Zion National Park in Utah, maybe drive to Bryce Canyon, and then up to Salt Lake City to take Joshua to school.  Should be another great trip.

Glad everyone made it home safe and sound.

Patrina, hope everything works out well with your wheels. Have fun on your trip.

We spent a week at Zion River RV Park. It was very nice, clean and friendly people there. We did do the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and Bryce. They are all day trips from Zion. Allow at least one day for Zion. They use shuttles there so there. No cars allowed in the park unless you're staying at the lodge until after October. Expect warm to hot weather. Have fun and it was great seeing to and your family again. It was a blast Sunday on the river.

That's one and the same rv park we will be staying at.  Sure looks like a nice park.  We have chosen a back in site along the river.  They seem to have the trees for some nice shade.

It is good to here every one made it back in one piece.  :#  Bonnie!  I got my car back on Wednesday.  Ok so I learned some thing on this trip and I am sure Sal will give me a hard time but I wasn't wasn't gearing down going in to the valley and boy did I  mess up my break!!  :banghead:  O well... eight hundred dollar mistake!!  :yikes:  :swear:  At least I wont be making that mistake again.  Both break pads and rotters in front of the car needed to be replace, change the break flued and sanded down one of the break rotters in the back.and they checked my fluids in my car.

It was so nice camping with every one and the food was great.   The kids had a blast!!  For some reason my twin boys played with this log in the creek all week end.  Crazy kids! :) .  My daughter and I went for a little hike to the restroom on night and these to boys on their bike where so excited they found this frog.  As they where rideing buy they stuck this huge frog in my face.  I screamed so loud!!! :yikes: . My daughter and those boys are still laughing at me.   Ha Ha Ha!  That frog was as long as my arm if not longer!!  Any way great seeing all of you and we can't wait till next time.

                                     Love Petrina

Yup there's shade there and a nice view of the "muddy" river. It's a short drive to the parking lot to catch the shuttle bus.

:p Hey Campers

What a great trip!! Thanks to Sal and Joan for putting it together. Sign us up for next year. Maybe next year Terri and I can manage to get next to the group and not off in siberia.

Our Grandaughter Olivia had a great time it was great she got to come along. The trip going home was unevenful which is a good thing from the sounds of some of some of your trips home. The trip down the grade was interesting we were behind a large bus rv I was thinking if the breaks give out I'd ride his bumper all the way down. We made it down just fine.

I'm going to attempt to attach some pics of the trip hope everyone can access them. Looking forward to the next trip with you all. John Terri and Chellsee dog.

Hello everyone;
We made it home around 6pm with all the traffic, no problems with the grade at all. We left the rest of the wood for a neighbor and I moved all the rest of the leftover weight to the front of the truck. The slowdowns were 12 mi. of construction in Stockton and the vacation traffic in Sacramento.
Glad to see that everyone had a good time in spite of the problems at the campground. If you want to go again next year speak up. We make reservations a year in advance. Hopefully they will decide which way they are going to make reservations. What ever they decide who ever is going will make their own reservations and pay the park themselves. I have never had to threaten so many people in my life. I do not take being told I am wrong by a rookie who doesn't know their butt from a hole in the ground at all. Yosemite is the only park in the whole system that does it different than any other park in the whole system. They went through 2 managers this year, one was fired, the current one has only been there 3 weeks. The staff was at only 30 to 40% of normal, and were not aware of the differences in the reservation system at the park. To all who heard my tirade I apologize, I have a bad temper, and I will not take being told I am wrong when I know I am 100% right by anyone. So if next year is what you want those will be the changes. Same weekend and dates.
Sal

This is for all of you who wished me well for my upcoming Gastric Bypass Surgery...

We drove to So. San Francisco yesterday (8/16/05) to meet with one of the Surgeons.  She was pleased with how I'm doing because I have lost 12 lbs.  She wants me to lose another 8 and has put me on what they call the "fast track".  Which means that I am doing well enough that I do not need to go to any more than 1 "Life Change" course to educate me more on what to expect after the surgery and the way my life will change.  That appointment is 9/2/05.  She has placed me on the "wait list" to have an appointment with the Dr. who will do my surgery for sometime in October when the appointment books open up.  If I loose the 8 lbs. by then, the surgeon will schedule my surgery within a month.  So, it looks like I may have my surgery sometime in November.   Hey, new clothes for Xmas!!! YAHOO!!!

Yosemite Fire Crews Work To Extinguish Multiple Lightening Fires

Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 04:20 PM

Sabrina Sabbagh News Anchor

Yosemite National Park, CA -- Fire crews rappelled from helicopters and scaled mountain trails yesterday to combat a dozen lightening fires burning near inhabited areas inside Yosemite National Park.

The fires were sparked yesterday by intense thunderstorms. Between five and six acres near Crane Flat and Foresta have been burned so far.

It cleared up about an hour later. He said the mesquitos were terrible.

THANKS all of you for the on-line support.  I will keep you posted.  There is a lady here at work that was about my same size and weight and she has lost 125 lbs.   She's my model.  Everyone here at work knows about it also so I not only have you all, but everyone here at work.  AND of course, Sal keeps telling everyone how proud of me he is....

I think I found the "missing link" :

http://www.mymotherlode.com/News/article/kvml/1124321403

to the Yosemite fire, but there was only the briefest of news there.

Also Joan as you know I've been through the surgery and can tell you that the jittery feeling is normal.  It really gets bad the day they set "the date" of your surgery (at least for me it was) .  But just keep in mind that the goal makes the trip worthwhile.  If you have any questions or need any advice just email me.

How about this?
Yosemite fire crews work to extinguish multiple lightening fires.
The Associated Press
(Updated Wednesday, August 17, 2005, 6:10 PM)

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (AP) - Fire crews rappelled from helicopters and scaled mountain trails Wednesday to combat a dozen lightening fires burning near inhabited areas inside Yosemite National Park.
The fires, which were sparked by Tuesday afternoon's intense thunderstorms, burnt between five and six acres near Crane Flat and Foresta, a community of about 200 people.
"Anytime we have these lightening fires with dry conditions, there is a potential for them to go into a developed area," said Scott Gediman, a park ranger. "We've been fighting them aggressively, and they're just about out."
One of the lightening fires came close to the Yosemite Institute, an outdoor education program in Crane Flat, park officials said. The blazes burnt down dozens of cedars and pine trees inside the park, and ignited trees in the Sierra National Forest, just outside the park below Yosemite Flat.
Gediman said 60 Yosemite firefighters began attacking the blazes mid-afternoon Tuesday. Crews descended on ropes into the fires armed with axes to chop down smoldering trees, as the rain that accompanied the storm dampened the underbrush.
"Most of them were just one or two burning trees, but this was a lot of concentrated strikes at one time," he added.

It needed you to sign up for free, and if you sign up for one bee you get them all.

I do have a bunch of really cute pictures of Brandy, but I've been lazy about going through the pictures and uploading them.  I've been trying to finish a scarf/shawl that I'm knitting for my mom and it seems that I can't do more than one thing at a time.  :o

I feel better also. I know you'll feel so much better after all this is done and you'll have a lot more energy. Best to you and Sal.
