Just thought I'd mention in case you weren't aware...
Last night after we were informed of Birol's continued banning, our own mild mannered Cindy, Mommamia, was sooooo upset that she sent out a post that was more than a little inflammatory. As a result, she has now been blocked as well. Didn't want anyone to think she was ill or anything when they don't hear from her anymore.

This is a little unsettling from a few fronts! I didn't see Cindy's post but can't imagine what got her to get so riled that she became so upset as to get blocked. If it were because of Birol.... I dunno.... how could that be? His getting banned (temporarily or permanently) rests squarely on his shoulders..... no one elses.
A couple of our members (past and present) have been inexorably tied together because of some recent strife. This is, of course, Birol and Bearbait .... as mentioned in a recent thread. I'm not so sure that this is fair beyond the mere names in a Header...... perhaps the only commonality they share. As individuals, each person should be responsible for their own, individual, actions.
Plain and simple. As adults, this should be easy...taking responsibility for ones actions is the right thing to do. To blame one person for a second person's actions is to relieve the second person of their responsibilities.
If Birol was banned (temporarily or permanently) and Cindy is now banned (temporarily or permanently), they are each responsible for the actions that caused this. No one else.
I hate to see anyone leave.

I think she must have you fooled. :)
This is my opinion.

Couldn't agree more, Skip.
This shouldn't be a contest ... or a war. It should be about a bunch o' people concerned about PUT and what goes on in OUR community, plain and simple. It's Dave's board ~ he gets to make the rules AND enforce them, whether we agree with them or not. We agreed to that when we signed on.
I don't think I can add anything more that hasn't already been said ~ except that I love PUT, the place that it has in my life and all the people I have met here. I look forward to spending some good quality time with ALL of you ...

Could not have worded it any better, SkipP & Kelly!
hey what's happening 'round here. I didn't notice any post last night about Birol's continued banning and I certainly didn't see Cindy's post. I felt like I was never off the computer last night 'cause I was feeling crummy and just kept stopping bye the site as entertainment and seemed to have missed all this? Could someone fill me in on what happened? I have found Cindy to be of great help and kindness toward me in our plans to move to FL, I'd hate to see her banned long-term. If anyone knows her email address please PM me. Thanks!
Maybe I should post the email she sent tearing me a new one and then finsihing by saying CANCEL MY SUBSCRIBPTION!

Admin...you have to be a little more professional and objective than that!! Your post disappoints me as you should be able to raise yourself up to a higher standard than the rest of us...after all your the admin!!! As a business you have to get use to someone eventually having a tirade but being customer service oriented, you have to go back to what this person is all about and has contributed to your business. A cooling off maybe.
I'd like to know what the heck is going on. Personally, the thread on Birol went on too long. I think anything that gets that too personal and private and full of emotional despair such as Birol's was, should be locked stating simply that the issue is becoming far too personal than should be posted on the forum and members are welcome to email the poster if they want to stay in touch with the subject at hand. Now that's JUST a suggestion...
Sorry if you got torn into, I don't know what transpired except to hear it doesn't sound pleasant, but she's probably very caught up in Birol situation and emotions just boiled over. I hope everyone calms down and this gets back to the PUT board of quality that I first came upon 4 yrs. ago....
Dave (admin) is getting fed up (sick & tired) of this NONsense. Hopefully we can get back "on topic" and put all of this behind us. Otherwise it is going to be a looooooooooooooooooooooong winter.
Camp On!!!!!
can we please get off this topic, and back to camping topics, this is getting old, and is getting to be a bed sore.
Am I the only one that feels like I'm back in middle school? I just wish everyone would lighten up and stop antagonizing/fighting. Our board would have less problems if we just let things roll and not jump on everyone - how about we try to just ignore the bait? This is the same technique that I try to use at my family's get togethers or else it seems we're all at each others' throats, while my brother (who starts the mess) just sits back and laughs at everyone.
In any case, rather than b....ing about those that were banned, give them a call or an email. If you're such good friends, you can easily continue to keep in touch. Birol emailed me yesterday and for those that care, he's doing fine. My daughter would like to keep in touch with his daughter. Some of us have been on PUT for many years and still keep in touch, even though many of the original members have left for one reason or another. I'm glad to see some of them returning.
Ok, I'm off to Boston now so hopefully all will be calm when I return.
Diane
I've witnesses a lot of arguments on these forums over the years and this one has escalated into what seems to be one of the worst yet. Personally I don't mind Birol's exit, I rarely read his silly posts or those of several others.
I have noticed Dave doesn't post much anymore unless there's a conflict. I'll bet it's because he's tired of it all. I give him until the end of the year and he'll pull the plug.
Dave doesn't want to pull any plugs but I'll bet times like these are very trying. His business is the magazine and he added boards a long time ago so subscribers and non-subscribers would have a place to congregate and share info.
The original boards were pretty close to the busiest on the web at the time. He responded to complaints about connectivity issues and speed by upgrading time and time again. He finally got to the point where his cost for paying for the bandwidth was compromising the magazine as a business and had to charge for the boards. He took a lot of guff from people for charging. They were in reality giving him a hard time for not paying for them to use the boards.
He did say he wished the boards were fun like they used to be.
Don't you all think he deserves a big hand for keeping this up through all of this and things in the past??
I say cheers to Dave for persevering and keeping these boards going...
:!
Thanks Dave!!!

"He did say he wished the boards were fun like they used to be. " I am sure this is a statement everyone could agree with :yikes:
And by the way, Charlie, it is "persevering" :J ;)

Thank you, I am now embarrassed because I have a trophy for winning the 6th grade spelling bee.
For those that can't see what I fixed, it is a private joke between me and Elisa. Too bad!!!!!!!!
(Sorry, Elisa and I)

Charlie, what did the trophy look like? Do you still have it? Is it proudly displayed for your kids to see? (I promise not to tell them about this little slip-up--or the members ;))
All right ~ I'm not so good at spelling and have no idea how to spell persevere without a dictionary, but I second what Charlie said ~
Thanks Dave!

It's always nice to be appreciated.
Thanks
Well said, Charlie. I appreciate Dave putting up with all of this. And I respect the business decision that HAD to be made last year.

Let the party BEGIN !
Time to get back to where we belong. Having FUN!

I couldn't have said it better myself Marcy!!

(Sorry, Elisa and I) For those of you who are using the PUT boards to help with home schooling, the correct usage is: "Elisa and me"
This is a common grammatical error. People often get confused on whether to use the subjective pronoun or the objective pronoun when mixing a person's name with I or ME. An easy test is to use WE or US in the sentance just to check: For example: Which sounds "right"
It is a private joke between WE. (Subjective pronoun)
It is a private joke between US. (Objective pronoun)
Most will agree US sounds right, and it is. So "Elisa and me" is right also.
Lesson over....no offense intended. But I have a feeling that there are a few home schooler teachers on this board who four or five times a day say, "Time for reading lessons. Let's go check the boards." :)

I think Kelly should eat before reading the boards. :)
Thanks for the correction on sentence. If there was one word I misspell more than any other, that is probably it. I should make up a little saying like Georgeanne used to make with her son to help him with spelling.
"All the sentences in a letter go in an envelope."
That will work...all e's in sentences...all e's in envelope.
It's never to late to learn. You can teach on old dog new tricks; it just takes more rewards. G, what's my reward?

Me think all this sentance stuff is oven done anyway.:D
Your name is the only word I EVER dispronounce.

Excellent point Larry. There were many people who screamed when this happened and attacked Dave viciously, and others who whined a lot; some of them left and others stayed and continued to whine for awhile at having to pay. Others stayed and supported Dave with total loyalty both financially and verbally and that is why the board continues today.
It has been a wonderful place for people to come and gather and have fun and discuss camping and other things that interest them.
NightOwl is being very modest. I don't know if anyone else in the membership expended the energy, and finances and moral support to help keep PUT afloat during those times as Elisa did. She was tireless in her support, and was constant in her awareness of those who claimed not to have the money to pay for a membership. She burned up the phone lines with Dave to 'sponsor' those that she felt would like to stay here, and didn't crow about who or exactly how many she quietly paid for. She, and a few others also were loyal behind the scenes, choosing not to patronize those message boards that were formed by disgruntled former PUT members, who went there to complain about Dave's business practices. She never missed a chance to praise the many features of this "family".
There were others who couldn't wait to grumble about how Dave's idea would fail, and that this wasn't fair, and they were going to go somewhere else. Many of those are suddenly making a triumphant comeback to this board now, and Dave has decided that they are desirable members here.
She hasn't mentioned to you how she left this board for months last year, because of BB and his sarcasm. Angelsmom hasn't come forward to tell you how long it took several of us to talk her into coming back after she was driven away by his attitude toward her. I left, for weeks, and then decided not to let someone who has a grudge against people ruin something that I had come to think of as very important to me. Al, Topcat, wouldn't allow any of to say a bad word about Dave or PUT in his presence, you should ask him what he thinks now.
This isn't about Birol, or about Cindy, and whoever said that we must all take responsibility for our own actions was right. As I said before, I was one of PUT's top cheerleaders, always having lots of good things to say about the magazine and message board. I am now taking the responsibility to hang up my pom poms.

Most forums develop severe hiccups when they start an "around the campfire" section because most people believe that it is a way to not have to stick to camping topics and rather just shoot out subjects they may discuss with friends around a fire type of thing. Those subjects could range anywhere from treating diaper rash to political bashing. If you've got An Around the Campfire forum, you have to expect some rocky conversations. Nipping it in the bud if they start to get out of control is a way to control the chatter but not just because someone doesn't like what someone else said. One can always just not read a post or opt to not respond if it isn't their cup of tea.
Remember...discretion is a good thing. This forum is very tame compared to so many others. Though trailer life did finally put a ban on political postings on their campfire section because some people were literally taking over the forum with their postings and were really getting nasty. There's no place or excuse for that. They were just using it as target practice to blast members who responded to their posts. But The Campfire is a far different forum than General Rving, etc. so your going to get some very different subject contents!
Have patience all, and if the moderator chooses to cut out a thread, then so be it as long as it's within their own guidelines and not personal opinion.
Now...time to hunt for some more firewood to get a comfy fire going again.. :!
Some excellent points made by several people. However, I think we need to move on and talk about other things. Some of these discussions and posts could possibly lead, eventually, to more animosity. I don't want to lock this thread, as Charlie has HAD to do to several others. So, let's get back to positive campfire talk!
