Title: Looking for a campground in the Poconos
Post by: tlhdoc on Jan 23, 2005, 12:46 PM
COTOC is looking for a new place to hold their fall rally.  We have held it at Hickory Run SP for the last several years, but people want a new location.  Any suggestions???:)

Frances Slocum (http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/parks/francesslocum.aspx) is a pretty nice park, but it's on the small side. It does have a pool though.

Ricketts Glen (http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/parks/rickettsglen.aspx) is one of our favorites, and has a really nice hike that meanders through the woods with about a dozen waterfalls. It's a really cool hike.

Both of these parks are a bit small, compared to Hickory Run anyway (but since Hickory is the biggest in the PA park system that's not surprising).

Promised Land (http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/parks/promisedland.aspx) is pretty close to the size of Hickory -- and it's spread out in a number of different "areas" -- but I can't say I liked that one too much. The sites are laid out in a less then ideal manner.

Locust Lake (http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/parks/locustlake.aspx) is one of our favorites, and has some nice sites. The hikes aren't all that great, but they're decent (if you take the long way around the mountain make sure you're wearing comfortable shoes, because you go up some pretty steep slopes). There's a lake too, so you can swim and fish. Just make sure you don't get any of the sites number 214 and up. Those are on the side of a hill, and they're really pretty crappy.

Thanks for the information.:)  Do you have any recommendations for sites in the pet loop (51 to 75) at Locust Lake?

I don't have any pets, so I can't vouch for those sites. But just about all the sites on that side of the lake are pretty good. There's some really nice ones in the 80's too.
