Title: Summer Campfires
Post by: hoppy on Feb 03, 2005, 02:47 PM
Posted this topic on another forum, and got a lot of responses.

Thought I would try it out here also.

Anyone else out there besides me have a fire going in 85 degree heat on a summers night?

Granted, it's not like the crankers that I have to stay warm during the winter months, just a small one for the effect.

I tried on several occassions not to set one, but I always feel that I cheated myself during those trips.

IMHO, camping without a campfire (regardless of temperature) is like camping without beer. :!  It just shouldn't be done!

We've overheard people say as they walked by our campsite..."a fire in this heat". As was stated above, camping without a campfire aint campin

I think it's in the Code of Federal Regulations or something. "Campers, when camping, are required to have a camp fire, at a camp site, in a camp ground, from approximately sun down until at least ten O'clock, with a choice of carbonated beverage, aka a cold one.  Telling fishing stories, remember whens, school escapades, and other outrageous tales while desirable, is not mandatory"

How can you possibly carry on a conversation in the evening without one?

Is it May yet??  I'm ready.

May, why wait so long?:yikes:  We start in March.:)

We don't have a fire every night on long trips, but a campfire is part of camping.

My DH has been known to have a campfire when the temps were 104 in the shade! As he calls a campfire "caveman TV" you all can understand. A campfire and a cold one are necessary ingredients for a good campout!

Gotta have a fire, that's the camping rule!
We do most of our cooking over the fire, without a fire we'd starve!
With high temps we still have the fire, but the morning cooking gets done on the stove.

Morning coffee isn't the same staring at an empty firepit  :morning:

We also do most of our cooking on the fire...and I'm in agreement on camping and campfire just go together. We've had them while sitting several feet away with a fan blowing on us! It's just...cozy. :>

Of course...more than once I've had a fire in the fireplace at home using a duraflame log with the airconditioner on!

Hoppy, my kids required one even when we were camping in 100 degree weather with blistering humitdity.  DH felt guilty about adding to the heat in the air!

VJM1639,
I do the same thing with the fan. One trick I use is while I'm up getting a beer, I place my head in the cooler for a moment or two. This helps a lot.

4campinfoxes, (Sharon)
Ah.... the things we do for our kids.

thldoc,
Isn't that what the people who live in AZ say?
You know, " It's hot out here..... but it's a dry heat"
Always laugh when I hear that one... Dry heat makes me think of being in a Blast Furnace.

Great replies everyone.... keep them coming.

Last August we had a great fire going.  Popped out the cell phone took a picture and I can go to what I call my happy place.  In the middle of that boring meeting at work or just having a trying day I pop open the cell phone & there's my fire ahhhhhhhhh! Great in all weather.

Camping is not camping unless you have that campfire....the beer, or wine does just not taste as good with out it :!

We love campfires too, no matter the temp. As long as I can get some of the dadburn wet wood to light! A whole lotta rain in the past couple of years has made it hard.
