Does anyone know if there is such a thing as a battery operated LP gas detector, for use when, for example, you are primitive camping or for whatever reason, not connected to a land electric connection. I am trying not to be paranoid, but I do want to "camp safe"?

The LP Detector in your trailer should be a 12V DC unit that will work off of your trailer's battery. They usually have an audilbe trouble sound, like a chirp, that sounds if your battery charge is too low for the detector to be reliable.

Would be alright, except my trailer doesn't have a battery. grrr
I think your best option would be to buy a Deep cycle RV/Marine Battery for your trailer - I presume you have leads and mounting bracket on your A-frame? Battery powered CO detectors run ~$50 and offer some level of safety but do not detect LP gas only carbon monoxide.
A portable LP detector is a much more expensive propostion
I think the simplest way to go would be to get a small 12 volt battery. If you don't want to get a full size deep cycle battery, you could get a small 12 volt battery (like the batteries for the brake away brake system).:)
