Title: popup prices
Post by: GeneF on Apr 01, 2005, 06:29 AM
I went to Sam's Club yesterday and a local dealer had a popup on display along with prices for several different models.

I guess I suffered a little sticker shock.

Cheapest one listed was an 8 footer with fridge, furnace, awning for $5710.  There may have been a couple of options that I missed.

Prices went up past $10,000.

The prices were supposed to be special at Sam's.

At a local RV show, I think the lowest I found a popup, again an 8 footer was for around $4700.

Maybe this explains the demand for used popups.

We bought our Jayco Qwest 10 new in 1999 for $3800.00.isted for $4500.00. Then added a Furnace, Battery, etc so ended up at about $4500.00 anyways!
I've been looking around at different options (as you know, thank you again for the tours!) and I am surprised at the prices for Pop-ups. Many of the prices on Hybrids are lower than a high end pop-up! Especially if you look at RV wholesalers or the RV place in Albany, NY. (Sorry, I forget the name!)
We've waffled back and forth, first it's a hybrid, then it's a pop-up, and back and forth. With Gas Prices, we're looking at Pop-ups orTrail Manors (speaking of sticker shock!) once again. We love sleeping in the pop-up, so I think a move to a full fledged trailer is out, BUT it really doesn't make sense that a pop-up would cost MORE than a Hybrid or TT!

According to a survey that I saw on RVB, price is a major reason that pop up sales have declined by half since 1998. Last year less than 32000 units were sold.

Dave

Thanks for your comment.

With the cost of the popups and campground fees jumping, I wonder how many younger families will miss out on the fun of camping in a popup.

Example on cg fees is that about 12 years ago we went to a private cg and paid aobut 12 to 14 dollars with electric and water.  The cg is now a state cg and it is costing me $31 dollars plus a $3 reservation fee for the same site.

I know what you mean, Gene. Although state cg prices haven't gone up much (maybe a dollar or two) in the three years I have been married/camping, the really nice cg's can cost a lot. It takes away from my argument that camping is cheaper than a motel (although it still is, the gap is closing).

Not that it makes it any easier to swallow but I'm sure it is all about supply and demand!

Campgrounds raise their fees because they are booked all the time, (or at last every weekend), their expenses: Fuel, insurance, etc are going up. I'm sure it's the same with the pop-up makers!

On the other hand, how would you like to be sitting on the inventories of huge Class A's and C's that some dealers are, with gas and diesel prices going to record levels! I'm willing to bet that pop-ups sales are going to rebound even with the inflated prices. On the other hand, perhaps TENT sales will be the most affected! We just bought a new tent to use for our Maine trips! Brings our TTO (total Tents owned) back up to 4 after we gave away 2 to less fortunate families that liked camping last year.

Still paying up near $50.00 per night to camp is a little steep!

You can get an entry level travel trailer (and not a small one!) for less than the high end popups.  I've been pretty surprised looking at the prices of 10 year old popups.  They sure hold their value - that's one way of looking at it.
Title: Prices
Post by: StarVol on Apr 29, 2005, 07:39 AM
I hear you. As a Dealer every four-six months we are getting a price increase notice from the factory or the transport company.  The only good news latley has been the interest rates are still very low. Our Starcraft Pop Ups 8' Fully Loaded range from $5,488-$5,988.
10' Box $6,488-$6,988 12' Box $7,788-$9,988 The Centennial Range from $9,988-$12,988. Most used units range in the $3,500-7,900 price range but with no warranty. Warranty is very important in a Pop Up Camper (if you plan on keeping it long term). If you have any questions feel free to email or call.

Happy Camping
Title: Pop Up vs Hybrids
Post by: StarVol on Apr 29, 2005, 07:43 AM
Pop Up Times,

I agree with you. Plus the fact the Hybrid is taking over the Pop Up Market. Pop Up Bathroom vs Hybrid Bathroom  Pop Up Price vs Hybrid Price. hmmmmmmm see what I am talking about First Time Buyers look at it and say why would anyone want a Pop Up.  We use to stock 35-50 Pop Ups at all time now we have cut it in half and raised the Stock of Hybrids.

Happy Camping

I just bought a 98 coachmen with a/c for $4,000.  Based on what have seen on used ones in the paper, it seems like I got a fair price.  The used ones are selling like hot cakes around here (Central Arkansas).  It seemed like every time I called about one it was sold before I could look at it.

Warranty or not I cannot afford 8 to 10K.

Starvol,
What's your out the door price on a Starcraft 2106 w/ awning, furnace, a/c, fridge, lp tank & cover, battery, spare tire & cover, and RVQ?  I have been looking at these and the prices I am getting are all over the board!
Thanks!

I have a New 2005 2106 In Stock Now
If you do not live in the State of Tennessee it would be $6,488
we do not collect any out of state taxes in Tennessee.
If you do live in Tennessee it would be $7,000. This also includes your State Tag's.

Thank you

I wish pop-up's were in that much demand out here in SoCal.  I'm having a bit of a time selling mine. I think the only serious inquiry has been from a scam artist.

Thanks StarVol!  I assume that I would have to pay my state taxes and title fees when brought home.  Seems like a pretty good price from what I've been seeing.

StarVol may have hit the nail on the head.  Supply and demand rules only work on commodity items.  Because manufacturing efficiencies dramatically effect prices on lower volume products (like campers) reduced demand results in increased prices.  This means that we will probably continue to pay higher prices for an equivalent pop up until the cost of fuel makes paying extra for a pop up a better economic decision.

So I guess all of us pop up lovers need to hope that gas prices hit $4/gal soon, then you won't be able to give away a hybrid and manufacturers will start competing to get our pop up business again.  Dropping the prices of the toys we love to a more reasonable range.  (Of course this really helps new comers more than us because the trade in value of our pop ups will drop when it is cheaper to buy new than used...)

:yikes: I just gave myself a headache, I better stop while I am ahead.  (I am ahead, right   )
