wssfetchthis follows the previous Fla camping thread.  But when I got to Koreshan there was no vacancy - people in campers aren t affected by the cold and there were lots of tenters and lots of campfires.

There were 8 in my group.  Two of us slept in the PU the first night.  Frankly, I d go again, because it was great during the day and we even went kayaking.  On the Monday it was warm enough to put shorts on.

I m scheduled to camp on Feb. 1st at JD Easterlin Park in Broward Co. and then do the Jungle Queen dinner cruise...and then Fisheating Creek on Feb. 15-17.

wssfetchThe last time I had the PU out it was snowing and blowing like a ........ well, you know.  It was extremely relaxing and a lot of fun.  I don t worry about the cold, I worry about the roads.  If the roads are clear..... I m outta here!

wssfetchDid all of you Florida folks winterize your PUs? [;)]

 wssfetchVenatic,

 Winterize?  Whats that?

Actually I did semi-winterizing since I do not have a water tank or water heater.  We just use city water hookup when camping.  So at the suggestion of several of the PUT campers, I blew out the line after the last camping trip in December.  And emptied the porta potty fresh water tank.

Usually here in north Fla. our overnight lows are in the upper 20s or low 30s with daytimes in the 50s.  But we re not used to single digit temps.  Our houses are designed more to keep us cool in the summer than to keep us warm in the winter.

I seem to remember a certain member who was in chat bragging about how he was going to be camping all winter while all us northerners were suffering through the winter. He said something about wearing shorts and t-shirts year round, I wonder if he has changed his mind? Maybe all of you can blame it on him.........So how about it Giffster, any reply?

And on another note, I wonder how those snow birds are all doing down there right now? Do you think they are wishing they stayed home this winter?

In theory it should work the same.  You have your homes insulated against the heat of the day, and to keep the cool air-conditioned atmosphere inside your home.... so that should help to keep the heat in your homes too.  Now, if you don t have a furnace... well that s another whole new problem.

 Have a great day!

wssfetchMany of the houses in the south were built before central AC became common. As a result they aren t very air tight, and lack good insulation. Shade and ventilation were the best ways to keep cool without AC. It s hard to build a house that will take advantage of the breeze in the summer and then seal up airtight in the winter.

wssfetchJaycoCampers is right.  Even with A/C, houses are built for the heat since our springs and falls are nice enough to keep everything open without the expense of running the air conditioning.  And a lot of people have heat pumps rather than furnaces so when the temps drop below 30 or so, their heating systems are pretty ineffective.

Southern homes tend to have lots and lots of windows for cross ventilation (and most people don t have storm windows or insulated glass), deep porches to shade those windows, high ceilings, shade trees, tile or terrazo floors, etc. Many older homes, homes in coastal and low lying areas, and rural homes are wood frame without solid foundations but are built up on piers.  So plumbing is exposed under the house and more vulnerable to freezing.

wssfetch[font=" Comic Sans MS" ]Well, I camped last weekend, glad I had the little heater,  and I m going next weekend, but was very happy to be home this weekend.  We re just not used to temps in the 20 s and 30 s here in South Florida.  Today is beautiful though.  mid 60 s, clear blue skies and next weekend looks to be even warmer.

It s not nice to brag though.  Shame on you Giffster [;)]

bearbaitWell...let s see.  It s 27 Jan.  I camped for 5 days over the new year.  And I believe I do have reservations at Falling Waters SP for Friday (a 3 day trip) [;)][:D].  The weather should be in the mid 60 s and mid 40 s.  My coldest trip yet!  Guess I ll take some sweat pants to put over my shorts.

 Cheers
