Title: tools to carry
Post by: flamedpop on May 11, 2005, 04:52 PM
What kind of tools do you usually keep packed in the camper? I've been trying to make a list, but I don't want to pack my whole garage and don't want to be caught without something I need.

Let's see....In my tool kit I've got a vice-grip, a multi-end screwdriver, a crescent wrench, a pry-bar, a razor-blade knife, a hammer, a multi-meter, needle-nose pliers, some rubber gasket material, plastic tape, bungee cords, and of course, duct tape. I'm working from memory here, so I may have left something out. If I think of something else I'll post again.

DH brings along a full set of sockets, wrenches and screw drivers. The camper tool box has an assortment of stuff. Pipe wrench (good for the propane tank) , pliers regular and needle nose, wire cutters, spare fuses, more screw drivers, duct tape (something everyone should have), a small tube of silicone caulking, super glue, foam weather sealer, thermo coupler, and a bunch of misc odds and ends I can't think of right now.

My bungie cords have a rubbermaid container of their own...I think I've made a hobby of collecting them.

I keep fuses, Teflon tape, Marine Goop, duct tape, PU light bulbs, electrical tape, plumbing tape, and the wrench and socket for the water heater in the PU.  The other tools I keep in the TV.  If I am camping I will have the TV there, so I don't carry duplicates in the camper.  In the TV I keep duct tape, wrenches, screwdrivers, gloves, hammer, cotter pins, wire, wire nuts, WD-40, silicone spray, etc.:)   There is more I just can't think of what else now.

Tie-wraps. Lowe's or Home Depot sell a cylinder shaped container with various lengths.

- screwdriver with interchangeable bits
- piece of flexible hose with hose clamps on either end. the hose has a large enough inside diameter to fit over my plumbing. I look at this as a emergency band-aid

I've picked up some extra tools at yard sales such as socket sets

Somewhat of a tool...don't forget an air pump or compressor. When we go ATV'ing to far away places, I even carry a tank of air (though this is not necessary).

Add channel locks, hatchet, folding shovel (aka entrenching tool), waterless hand cleaner, some small hose clamps, and you are ready for anything.

Add to all the above a torque wrench with a socket that fits the lug nuts on the wheels.  I read several horror stories on this board about wheels coming loose - PoPuP owner's manuals stress the importance of insuring that the nuts are properly torqued (usually when new, but if one were to take a wheel off...).  The torque wrench may be over kill, but what the heck...

I also carry a torque wrench and sockets, but not necessarily for popup or camping. They just happen to be in the toolbox. I can see how a good torque wrench would be a good idea, though, for checking the lugs.
