Title: YAHBR! (Yet another home-made bike rack)
Post by: astropunk on Jul 20, 2005, 11:31 PM
It was evident from the first day we went camping, I needed a bike rack of some kind.  I liked the pro-rac style that mounts to the trailer tongue.  However I thought for $450 it was rediculously overpriced.

I made my own pro-rac style bike rack.  Here is a webpage with pictures.

enjoy!

Nice job.  You might want to run a line from the part the bikes mount to, up around the seat post of the bikes and then back to the mounting bar, for each bike.  That way the back end of the bikes will not slide around.:)

I came across this link http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/RA707A02-Saris+Traps+Single+Track.aspx (//%22http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/RA707A02-Saris+Traps+Single+Track.aspx%22) on their site for exactly what I was looking for.

I was going to buy a couple of the clamps shown in the first post and then a couple wheel holders and mount them to a 2x4 "I" piece I'm making for a roof top bike rack, but for $35 bucks (cheaper than buying all the pieces separate) I can get a pre-assembled piece that all I'll need to do is mount to the 2x4.

I was planning to buy one of those to use in the bed of my truck.  Are you going to mount it to your popup?  I considered it, but I was afraid to drill holes in the roof.  Thats why I liked the frame mounted option.

It won't be a permanent mount setup.  I'm going to make an "I" frame out of 2x4's & 2x6's with two eye hooks on each end and use ratchet straps hooked to the hooks down to the frame to hold it down.  Remove it when get to camp and set it under the camper.

It's on my x-mas list, so it'll be a nice winter project for this year.

Have you tried it out yet on a trip...if so how did it do?  I'm very interested in making one like it.
