Title: Another bed question
Post by: springer02 on Sep 11, 2005, 05:21 PM
I guess DH and I just aren't as young as we used to be.  We're both waking up feeling stiff and sore after a night in the PU.  I know I've read somewhere about using egg crate material or air mattresses but how?

Do you use the egg crate stuff with the "points" (for the lack of a better term) up or down?  Do you put in under or on top of the PU mattress?

We had a very old air mattress so we tried it this weekend but I think one of the doggies popped it as it didn't hold air for the entire night.  The air mattress was a bit smaller than our king bunk and I never got comfortable on it.  We put it on top of the mattress but under the sleeping bag.

What does everyone else do?

Thanks in advance,

Tena

I use foam, that has slits in in making rectangle blocks in the foam.  I like that better than the pointy eggcrate pads.  I have mine above the mattress.  A friend of mine uses memory foam.  She loves it on top of the mattress, but her DH hates it.  He wakes up with a back ache when she has it on top.  So they tried it under the mattress and they are both happy with it that way.  It is a matter of personal preference.:)

We tried the egg crate foam on our old camper and, to my wife, it just wasn't comfortable. Even though it was quite pricey, we bought a memory foam mattress for the Mesa and it has really made a difference! Seems like it was about $80 at Target for the king size. Haven't tried it below the mattress, just above.

Tena,

We have tried egg crate foam, adding standard air materesses on top of the bunk and 2 ThermARest  self inflating mattresses under the bunk.

We have now settled on an Aero (http://www.thinkaero.com/retail/MinuteBedNew.asp)

we have the two inch foam, if you order it from JC penny's on line its 50.00 any size, in the store its much more. we have it on top of the mattress, and in the winter we put the open sleeping bag on top of the foam, and it holds the body heat.
