:) I am very excited. Two of my best friends just bought a campground. The campground was once a Jellystone, but then became It's A Wonderful Life. It is in Arcadia off of I-81 (not too far from Lexington and Natural Bridge). The place needs some work, which they have already started. I am so happy for them, this has always been a dream of theirs. I am excited since it is so close to Roanoke, where I live. They are planning to call it Middle Creek Campground. As soon as I have more information, I will post it!

Yes, I know! These are the friends that I always go camping with. They are planning to live there, so it will not seem like camping for them anymore! It will also be a huge amount of work. I admire them for doing it. They are so excited! I hope they make a go of it.
Sounds real good. If I get the opportunity to stop there and spend a few days with them, I will let them know you sent us.
My wife's cousin will be work camping in VA again this year and my wife is going to fly down to San Antonio in April and spend a couple of weeks in her Class A driving back to VA. She's a remarkable gal - 71 years young and drives that rig and tows a Jeep Cherokee toad. Been all over and just loves what she does. Anyway, we hope to spend some time camping with her as well as other locations in VA. Perhaps our paths will cross.
Jimmy and Sandy, also Roanokers
Yes, I hope you can swing by! They are so cute, planning what to put in the store. They have been working on a campground logo. I hope to camp the 1st of April. My husband will be in Greensboro, and he doesn't like the idea of me going camping without him. We'll just see about that! My kids need to see an independent Mommy! As a Roanoker, where do you camp most often? We tried Natural Bridge Jellystone, Montebello, and Fairy Stone last summer. I liked Fairy Stone the best. Montebello was beautiful, but quite a mountainous climb. I am definitely the camper in the family. My husband really doesn't mind it, but he thinks it is a huge production for what he says amounts to "Living like a homeless person for the weekend." I love it. And the children do as well!
I assume they don't have a website yet. Why don't you have them take some pictures and scan their logo, and we'll do a little publicity here for them.

Weezy...if you liked Fairy Stone, try just a very few miles past that at Goose Point...doesn't get much better than that in my opinion! :>
Look forward to seeing/hearing more about the new campground your friends are opening. I wish them the very best! :>
Weezy, if your DH likes fishing - he can stay busy while you camp at Douthat State Park in Clifton Forge. It's a beautiful park with lots to do for you and the kids..and if he really doesn't like "roughing it" - they have a real good restaurant.
Douthat State Park is our all time favorite place to camp. Like stateparkgirl said, it's a gorgeous park with lots to do -- the fishing is awesome, I even catch trout. (If I can catch them, anyone can!)
We also like Loft Mountain on Skyline Drive. It's a bit of a steep drive to get there but the park is wonderful, not much to do, but watching the deer and bear make up for it.

Please let me know when it opens. I live in Lynchburg, and because of my DH's work schedule, me and my DS will be camping on our own some. We usually camp at Otter Creek or Peaks of Otter, but I am looking for a new place.
I am hoping that we have our camper ready for April 1st....we received it as a gift back in September, and since it wasn't "camping ready", we haven't taken her out yet. I can't wait!!!

They are planning to open the March 31-April 1 weekend. The place really got run down with the former owners, but my friends are really trying to make a lot improvements. They have invested so much money and time already! I hope they are very successful with it. I noticed that you and I are both born in 1969, and your son and my daughter are close in age. She is Sept. 1999. Too cool! I also have a son who will be four in April. Do you camp solo? I am in the same boat, wanting to go camping soon, but DH has other plans for that weekend. I am trying to get some other folks to go. I am not really worried about taking the kids alone, but DH doesn't like it! They are calling the place Middle Creek Campground. It is about a 10 minute drive from the Arcadia exit off of I81. I am going down there this Saturday to help paint. My kids go to play with their best friends (who are six and four). Let me know if you are going to try to go that weekend.

Can you give me the street and city that the campground is located at so that I can mapquest it? I am a little hesitant about driving on I81 with a camper...especially since it will be my first time!!
I do plan on camping that weekend, weather permitting, of course! I will more than likely be alone with the little one, but that isn't a problem. I used to camp all by myself before we were married (of course, my mother didn't think it was such a good idea, lol), and have even ventured out a few times with just the kid. Well, I say alone, but I don't count my husband showing up at midnight as really being there.
Anyway, I will keep checking this thread for your reply. By the way, how did the painting, etc. go?

Basically, you get off at the Arcadia exit, turn right, drive 4-5 miles, turn left on Middle Creek Road (Buchanan Virginia). The campground is just up that road 1164 is the street number. They are close to having their website finished. I'll post a link soon. They are primarily trying to renovate the store since that will be the base of operation. They have an excavator working also. The previous owner thought it would be nice to make some money clearing an entire hillside. I guess he made some cash, but left a huge mess. It's sad because my friends are paying over $20,000 in fees to the excavator. They bought the place knowing it needed a lot of work. My friend's husband is living there 24/7 working to get it ready. She comes up Friday with the kids and stays all weekend. Some of the campers who have yearly sites have pitched in to help. They have a lot of long range plans. It is just a shame that the previous owner cared so little for the place. I used to camp there years ago, before my kids were born. It ajoins the National Forest, and there are a lot good fishing streams. They have 2 ponds, a pool, horseshoes, and are working to build a new pavillion. It has a way to go, but it has so much potential. I hope a lot of people give it a chance. I just had the bearings packed on my pop today. I am looking forward to getting out there soon. If you were coming from Lynchburg, you could cut over to Rt.11 and come that way. You would never have to even get on 81. I hate driving on 81 too, even without the camper!

Weezy,
We went by Middle Creek CG Sunday and I spoke with Susan. She told me of your loss and I wanted to pass along our sympathies to you and your family.
We hope your return trip is a safe one.
Jimmy and Sandy
ColemanCampingFamily,
I think we will be at Paradise Lake the week of May 16th. The TV gets a checkup on the 15th so can't make the Monday date. We are scheduled to return to Goose Point COE at Philpott Lake on the 21st - 25th then on to Smith Mt SP for Memorial weekend.
Perhaps our paths will cross sometime.

Yes, Susan said you visited. I appreciate the well wishes. it has been a rough week or so. My mother in law was hit by a car and killed by a drunk driver. It was a huge shock. We are just now returning to our "normal" lives.
I am going to try to camp during Spring break during the week of April 17th. Maybe Tuesday- Thursday. We'll see how the weather is, and if the burn bans are lifted. I just can't camp without a campfire! :)
I have been doing a lot of mods to my Starcraft lately, and I'm eager to try them out! I want to take some pictures soon to show what we've done! GemmySam, thanks for the GoosePoint link. It was neat to see ACTUAL pictures of each campsite. I would love to go there sometime this summer. It looks awesome!
Is this the campground that was once called "the campground at Natural Bridge" that is on the James River?

Sherry,
Middle Creek CG and "The CG at Natural Bridge" are 2 different cg's.
MC is near Buchanan - Arcadia and on Middle Creek Rd.
The CG @ NB is near NB then east on route 130 then south across the James River at Greenlee. Turn left on James River Rd and follow to cg. <2 miles and on the south side of the river.
Hope this helps.

I was thinking of SMSP for Memorial weekend as well. Our first trip out this year will be April 22nd. Thinking of Middle Creek for that one, or Otter Creek.

Weezy...OT a bit here, but I noticed in an old post that you have been to Montebello CG and had a good experience. We have reservations for Memorial Day weekend!! Exactly how bad is the "mountainous" drive? Our PUP is very light, but I don't want to have problems (4 cyl vehicle).
We were supposed to go camping this weekend but the weather made me cancel our reservations at Wildwood CG. Perhaps we can get to Middle Creek CG in two weeks.

Hey there! We loved Montebello, but the mountain was a bear. But, if you get on the parkway, you can hop off near the campground and the climb isn't as steep. (This is what I heard). Check mapquest. I spent Tuesday and Wednesday at Middle Creek with my kids. We had an o.k. time, just a Murphy's Law kind of adventure, if you know what I mean. I think the idea of camping with a four and six year old alone was better in theory than reality. Setting up and breaking camp alone was hard with the kids. My daughter was especially whiney (too many bugs) and my son was slightly sick with alergy type stuff. I probably won't try this again alone for a while! My friend's two boys, also four and six hung out with us for many hours, and while I love these kids, I was exhausted watching after four kids for two days. Middle Creek is coming along nicely. They are currently renovating the bath houses and doing excavations on the hillside that was logged years ago. It is not perfect now, but it really has a lot of potential. I hope that those who do try it out this year will realize how far it has come in a short time, and how much improvement will be happening in the future. I hope our paths will cross sometime soon. Keep me posted on your plans!

I went to the campground today...OUCH it looks like a trailer park. A bunch of dumpy trailer campers from 1940's all on blocks trash everywhere. I think I would just assume stay in a city park on the bench. I went to the store but it was closed I was hoping that I had the wrong place. I was very disappointed because I was looking forward to having aplace to go camping so close to home(Roanoke). Im sorry but I would stay away from here for now.
TonyM,
We will be at Goose Point May 7th - May 12th...60mi south of Roanoke.
Stop by C18 if you are down that way.

Tony,
Yes, the campground is far from being perfect. They bought it a few months ago and have already dumped $30,000 + into renovations. If you could have seen it months ago, then you would see my point. As far as the older trailers go, these people are ones who had yearly contracts with the former owner. My friends are in the process of having some of these folks either clean up or leave. But they can't just exactly boot these people out of their seasonal sites because they have older campers. I am sorry that you had such a bad impression. As I have said before, the campground does need a lot of work, and will for some time to come. I think that it will improve over the next few months. I hope that maybe you'll give it another chance sometime!

I was simply shocked because you gave the impression of this decent campground when it really looks like a shanty town in Africa. Im sorry but this is the way it is now....If I was you I would not tell anyone about it until it is the way you want people to see it. I want to make sure that no-one here makes plans to go until they know the facts about it or anywhere else for that matter. If I had loaded my two kids and wife up for a few days at a camp ground and got what I saw I would have been furious with you. Let me tell you they have about 2 years worth of clean up and another 150,000 in work before I will take may family there. If it was a couple of buddys wanting to get drunk and fish or hunt then maybe it wouldn't be so bad to fall over the waste high trash and junked cars. The campers that you so nicely said were, "seasonal" had not moved in 20 years. They are permanent. I feel bad to say this but after you wrote so many nice things about it I was very disappointed.

WOW Tony! I started this thread because of my excitement about an opportunity that two of my best friends got to really do something cool. I have said repeatedly that the place was in need of many repairs. As a camper, and one who is always looking for a new place, I am proud of two young (30ish) people who are trying to make a campground come back to life. I camped there two weeks ago, and I did not see waist high trash or junked cars. It is probably not best for anyone to try it (and I'm sure no one will now), since you described it as a "shanty town in Africa." That's pretty harsh, don't you think? If you were expecting a Goose Point or Fairy Stone, sorry. These places have been lovingly cared for and maintained for many years. It is a campground that does need to be brought back to life after years of neglect. I would hate for you to be "furious" with me! I was simply expressing my excitement about two friends and their new venture. The questions about the place were a result. I feel like the camping community should give these decent, HARD WORKING people a chance. Sorry to sound off, but your comments were so harsh!

I am with you on the excitement I too love to see people making something out of nothing. I am excited for them but and a big but, people should be aware of what I said. Maybe I missed something but Jim also went out there and he took pictures. He agreed with me. I will be that way next week I will bring my camera and take some photos maybe you can tell me if I have the right place but it looked like the road dead ended in the area I described. I am sorry if my sharing offended you and surely your friends know what they got into or they wouldnt have made the decision. If they are pop-up fans they will turn it around and I look forward to visiting when they do.
Tony,
Susan shared with me some of your recent emails to her regarding the campground. She too was shocked by your comments on this forumn. Judging from your most recent communications with her, it appears that maybe you would possibly like to visit Middle Creek some time in the future. This is quite a change from "I'd rather sleep on a park bench" and "it looks like a "shanty town in Africa." What led to your change of opinion?
Here is what you said to Susan:
Thank you. I am very excited about your venture. It is too bad they ran

Just Curious!
Elizabeth
Wow, look at all this talk about our new campground. After telling my friend Weezy about a kind of mean email I received, she confessed to knowing the origin of it. I felt the need to come on here and give a little perspective and history on Middle Creek Campground. This campground was originally founded in the late 50's by Mr Campbell as a hunting camp at the edge of the Jefferson National Forest. It later became the Jellystone at Arcadia and later A Wonderful Life Campground. My family and I purchased it on Feb 10, 2006. The campground has suffered from YEARS of neglect, however in past three months we have re-roofed the stores and bath houses, painted and renovated the store and game room, excavated and hauled off 8 acres worth of fallen trees and debris, seeded the 8 acres, begun renovations on the bath houses including new sinks, toilets etc, gave them EXTENSIVE cleaning, torn down a dilapidated pavilion have a new one under roof waiting for the floor to be poured, and are re-piping the pool to have it ready for Memorial Day weekend. And we realize that we have LOTS more work to do.
We are close to the Appalachian Trail, Jennings Creek - a state stocked stream, we have a playground, two stocked fish ponds, lots of places to ride bikes, hike, picnic, and just enjoy nature.
We DO NOT have junk cars, piles of trash, or campers from the 1940's. We DO have seasonal campers who rent spaces by the year, yes some of them have been there for a few years and have decks built, stacks of fire wood and other stuff. We DO have some seasonal campers whos sites look like shanty towns, but the entire campground DOES NOT look like a shanty town. These issues will be addressed as we continue to make progress.
Our website tells everyone that the campground is under renovation in the very first line. I do not want to mislead anyone into thinking that it is in pristine condition- although check back and I think you'll find it will be as nice as any state park. This is a campground in progress, yes it will take several years to get it into the condition that we are happy with although probably never satisfied. It is still a fun place to camp and there are lots of things to do besides get drunk and hunt. We have arts and crafts on Saturday mornings, we will be having wagon rides, pool tournaments, horseshoe tournaments, air hockey tournaments, scavenger hunts and other activities for the kids including toddler activities.
I hope that Tony M's comments will not stop any one from checking it out and making their own decision to visit or better yet come stay the night and make your decision. Please check out our website at middlecreekcampground.com we will be updating it regularly and showing the progress that is being made. If you've camped there in the past I think you'll be pleased with the progress that is being made.
Here are a few things that we will be working on:
adding more sites on the hill above the pond
updating the electric
new playground with fence
volleyball court
adding more sewer sites
adding camping cabins
rebuilding the foot bridge across the creek
adding seperate sites specifically for seasonal campers
adding more water features, mushrooms, water slide
converting upper pond back into a swim pond with deck and fountain
building mtn biking trails on site
Thanks for your time and consideration
Susan Martin
co-owner, Middle Creek Campground
Buchanan VA
I have been talking to the owners about my impressions. It took them several weeks to get back to me so that is why I posted here. They let me know all the info above. The problem is that You told me that the area I was seeing is the campground but as I have discovered it is actually up on the hill far from the shanty town. I did tell your freind that I cannot wait for them to get things turned around and their facilities up and running.
Publically I will say it is awesome you guys have this place and it is shameful that the previous people were permitted to let this fall apart as they did. I did not get out to verify that the trailer park on the left is the campgroound so I guess that is my fault. I am sure if you look at it from my perspective coming down that road and seeing that area and the green store building and nothing else it would appear as I stated. If not than I am sorry.
We just got home from a two day visit to Middle Creek. We had an awesome time! The weather was a bit rainy Thursday night, but it was really nice Friday and early Saturday. We had to come home today due to an obligation my DH had. We had a really nice, private, shady site with a cool path short cut through the woods down to the store, pool, game room, etc... I had a great time playing with my new bal leveler. That is just the coolest invention ever!!The kids and I did not want to come home. Middle Creek had a full house for the weekend and when I left, everyone seemed to be having a blast! They just finished building their new pavilion, and will be having a band play tonight. I hate having to miss it!!! We are planning to return to Middle Creek on Father's Day weekend. :)
Greetings from the camp!
Things are progressing as we learn more and get the swing of things. This weekend was great we had Christmas in July with a visit from Santa! We had to cancel the "Sl-hay" ride and karaoke because of the rain that seemed to arrive just in time to catch it. But once the rain cleared up and the humidity returned we had an impromtu late night swim that was enjoyed by all the kids and a good deal of adults!
We had a great 4th of July weekend with performances by Midnight Thunder, everyone had a great time dancing, on Saturday night. Then Tim Martin and Mike Armstrong of the Key West band on Sunday night jammed the place with some great tunes! An awesome fireworks display rounded off the celebration of our nation's birthday. The kids had a blast making firecracker hats and flags in arts and crafts. We had greased watermelons in the pool, ice cream sundaes and face painting. The place was packed and everyone had a great time.
We are making plans for Labor Day weekend, including the Moonshine Express playing live at the Pavilion. If you haven't heard them they are great! A cover band that sounds remarkably close to whomever they are covering. They were here for Memorial Day and rocked the place with classic rock and country to the latest tunes on the radio. We will have lots of activities for kids and adults, including arts and crafts, ice cream, water games, horseshoe tournament, pool tournament, and an air hockey tournament for the kids.
Our website is up and running at middlecreekcampground.com, check it out and we hope to see you at the campground!
Your new web-site looks great...just wish you had some pictures of the sites, etc. On the other hand, we have camped at places that had great pictures and they were the pitts!! Anyway, we hope to camp here this season.

You should check it out. We will be camping there from Sunday through Wednesday. DH finally has some vacation time. And I am eager to camp in my new camper. We sold the pup and got a Cikira 16cc. It has sleeping for five, a fridge, ac, furnace, hw heater, stove, bathroom, and I can pull it with my Honda Pilot. I just got tired of the setup/takedown which I often do alone, and wanted the hardwall security. I am really excited!! I hope to run into you sometime. Maybe you could come for a day trip to check out the CG before coming for a weekend. They have made a lot of progress, and have a lot more ideas to come. It really does just take time! I hate that I haven't been camping lately, I've been sick and taking classes toward my Master's degree. It's been soooo busy. I need to relax and enjoy the rest of my summer off.
