Title: Absolutely LOVELY trip!
Post by: PITPOP27 on Feb 28, 2006, 11:39 AM
Well, our first official trip and all went beautifully! Set up was great.  We've already decided to go back in Sept to this camp graound and have a trip in April planned for Leo Carillo State Beach.  We had great weather, and when we returned a horrible storm is going on until friday!  So we were blessed to have such a great weekend.

Friends helped us with lighting the hot water pilot (the instructions were so inaccurate about lighting position), figured out the furnace, shower (lovely but takes a lot of water up!)  Cooking inside and great (although people seemed to be shocked we were cooking inside... I mean what's it there for we bought it to be used)!

Hubby has decided top priority on mods is the two drawers - they need to be taken out turned into shelves and the faceplates put back on for flip closing.

He also wants to build a box for the table to sit on to raise the dinette table up (it's very low).

I only have two pictures so far as my digital died (very glad I brought another camera along)  so here's our only current photos - one is the set  up and one is the messy interior!

I'll have more pictures either later today or tomorrow.  Oor dog was great and had a really good time camping.  There were alot of dogs there!

Glad it went well and everyone had a good time.  I'm sure there will be many more in the future.  As for the stove, I doubt we will use the inside one much, probably during bad weather, but we tend to cook outside.

:frosty: it was a little cold for the DH, and no complaints for momma, he made breakfast burritos, french toast, and eggs, bacon and tortillas!  Yummy breakfasts and everyone kept coming over to see what he was making :D

What weekend are you going to Leo Carrillo State Beach? We are going to Refugio (right down the road) the weekend of the 7th - 9th. If that's the same weekend, maybe we'll stop by and say "Howdy" :D .

Leo Carrillo is our favorite CG on the coast, so far. Have you camped there before? We haven't been to Refugio yet and thought that we would give it a try. I hear that the trains are sort of a nuisance, but not bad. At Leo Carrillo, you can get as far back off of the road as you want. You get a lot of road noise if you take the beach side campsites. However, if you get toooooooo far inland, it's a long walk to the beach.

Sounds like a great first trip!  You're so lucky to be able to get out this time of year!   :frosty:

I've never cooked inside this PU ~ in fact the indoor/outdoor stove is stashed in a cabinet in the garage!  Only cooked inside the previous PU once ~ it was too windy outside to keep the stove lit!

We've been NO WHERE before  :D We are going the weekend of the 28th.  Glad to hear you liked it as we are totally clueless about it, just going off a recommendation. We are going with another friend so we have to drive together as it's first come, we thought about asking for closer to the beach so less walking, I think we are just aiming for a spot together - any other little hints would be great.  Anywhere semi neat to eat out at night clsoe by? It will be my birthday as well as my friends  husband that weekend.

Carpenteria was awesome!  So close to the quaint little town.  I wont stay in Santa Cruz again, Santa Rosa looks better - busier, but I hate being totally quiet in the morning and feeling like my kids are too loud. In Santa Cruz you can smell some sort of refuse place in the mornings, and the trains....UGH, why do they blow the horns in the middle of the night?  There's no one there!  Otherwise great place for kids and dogs, LOVED the tide pools, I had never seen so many sea stars the large and altogether in MY LIFE!

Do you know what camp ground - if it even is one - tat you see from the Ventura freeway, where people are simply parked facing the ocean in RV spots all down what looks like PCH?  My hubby and I were trying to figure out how to get there....it's on the left going north on the 101 before you get to Carpenteria.  I'm wondering if it's FCFS as well, it didn't even look as if it had bathrooms, gates ..NADA!

Might be Carpinteria SP.

EDIT-------I removed the pictures :D

I can't find any info on it (yet :p ). It may be day use only.

You THOUGHT! you found it (I've presented a challange haven't I?)  It's farther south than Carpenteria...I can't remember if it's south of Rincon.  The Street is lterally walk out onto the beach...trailers have been seend as late as 12pm...so I think it's an overnighter....It's definitely Ventura CO.
Maybe it's Emma Wood - I'm gonna look at the details.

I like your arial, I think it's south of that....Now I'm off to look too!

THIS is it, Emma Woods State Beach....it's hard to tell in the photo, but it's just RIGHT on the ocean shore that you park, lovely.

Don't know why that link is not working....anyway, it says it's closed by storm damage but it isn't.  We saw people camped there.  Very primitive, but for a weekend it looks great!

We did camp at Emma Wood one time. The trains are just a little toooooooo close. They startled us half to death in the middle of the night. They roar through there at about 80MPH and it sounds like a cannon going off inside your camper. I'll never go back there.

Refugio has trains too but they're not as close and you have some warning because they are not traveling at high speed there (So I've been told). I'll report back on that later.

If you like that sort of spot, Point Mugu is the best IMO. You are RIGHT on the beach. No trains but you do get a little highway noise. Night time is pretty quiet except for the occasional truck but the surf is so loud that it drowns them out :p . We go there about once a month. It's our weekend home :D .

Most of the time, we don't even make reservations and it is $11 a night, $9 for us seniors (& senioritas). I just watch the reservations and see if it looks like they may book up. If there are only a few spaces open, we will reserve a site at the last minute, just to be safe. Then it costs $30 (incl $7.50 reservation fee rip-off) instead of $18.

When we were at Pt Mugu last time, someone turned us on to this place:
http://www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=607

Haven't tried it yet but they just raved about it. It's right in Oxnard and 5 miles off the main highway. NO TRAINS!!! :D

I was wondering about McGrath..but you haven't been there yet?

I was telling some friends about your (I didn't mention your name but you know what I mean, a friend recommended to me..blahblahblah) about Point Magu and they were like, that place is a hole and full of ticks, and they went on and on about how horrible it was ....yada yada yada...but everyone's opinions are different you know?  So now I don't know what to think about PM..But you really like it, right?

TICKS  :yikes:  :J

We've been there about 5 times in the last 4 months. Now, mind you, we haven't been making whoopie in the bushes...but ...........ticks :p

The only bad experience that we have had was high winds after a cold front passes through. It was awesome :yikes: . There were water spouts out on the ocean and everything. Now that I know to watch the weather before leaving and what to look out for, I love it there.  Ticks????.....Come-on, you've gotta be pulling my leg :p

Most of the people that we have met there, are regulars with pretty fancy rigs and most have dogs. I sometimes feel kinda outa place in my PU but other than that............TICKS :D     Yee-gads :p  Maybe my parrot (Doofus) ate 'em all

That looks like McGrath to me.  Nice, but the road is a bit noisy for me.  Can't stand hearing cars!  And because of the sand dunes, it's kind of hard to hear the surf at night.  I've been several times, mostly in a Class C, but it's delightful -- especially in the summer when it's stifling in town.  It books up pretty fast, though.

Glad to hear you had a great time...
BUT I have to ask...that parking lot is really a camp ground???

Guess I'm a little spoiled with Michigan State Parks. We do have 1 that squeezes them in like that on Lk Michigan..we always drove by scratching our heads.  Here  is our favorite local CG site.

I think all those trees are great but i also think if we had those on the beach it take away from the view.   The one bright spot about living in SoCal is, drive a bit and camp at the beach, or drive a bit more and camp in the Sequoia's. Not many state's have that luxury.

Ya....we used to add........."drive a bit more and you are in the desert" ....but now what used to be desert is all new housing developments, amusement parks and shopping malls. :p

Caused by the influx of people from the mid-west :p

Nope, Emma Wood is next to McGrath State Beach.

Mc Grath is a good place to go too.  If you camp in an inner loop, you can't really hear any traffic, in my experience.  If you camp as close to the ranger station as you can, of course you'll hear it.  We've been there several times and we took our Girl Scout troop there as well.  There is a nature trail that's quite long you can hike, guided or not.  They have an awesome ranger program Saturday nights.  Nearby is a marina shopping center that has quirky little shops and a great ice cream store.  There is also a beach nearby for the summer months that is perfect for kids -- little bit of waves, but not so much you have to be too concerned they'll get washed out to sea.  The beach at Mc Grath is too rough for swimming.  I've seen people fishing there though.  There are no hook-ups, so you need to bring your jugs of water.  The showers are pay and solar heated, so keep that in mind.

My son was playing in the off season club league (OCWP) at El Dorado last year, but the drive twice a week along with too much homework and the fact that he'd get out of swim practice about 4:00 and have to leave for
El Dorado by 5:15 got to be too much. Several of the boys joined at the recommendation of our former head coach, but most dropped for these same reasons by the next sign-up period. I heard a few are doing it this time around though. My son broke his hand his freshman season and missed basically the whole season, so El Dorado was good for him and helped him catch up to the other kids who had played when he was injured. Plus it's fun when he plays against kids from other schools that knows from OCWP.

Send me a private message with his name. I'll ask my son if he knows him.  Does Rachel's last name start with a "M"?  If so, my son knows her.
