Title: Got insurance on your pu?
Post by: madkatz1 on Apr 16, 2006, 10:02 AM
State Farm wants about $200 a year for a new $7000 pu.

I've had auto insurance with SF for about 25+ yrs - no accidents.
I also have my homeowners with them - no claims.

I think it's a bit expensive.... what are your educated opinions? (You guys/gals are so smart & saavy!)

First, my usual disclaimer:

Insurance is different in every state and province and you should only take advice on coverage from a licensed professional in your local area. No two individual cases are alike and therefore should not be compared to each other. If your state licenses independent brokers, I would suggest speaking to one of them as they are not employed by any insurance company and usually have the broadest range of experience. Do not avoid this issue, while your auto policy MAY cover the trailer while towing, any damage to the camper, theft from the camper or injuries to persons visiting the camper may not be covered.

Now, We have our auto and homeowners insurance with the same company, so adding coverage for the camper was easy and relatively inexpensive.  You should check around for insurance every couple of years as compaines rates change often.

Ditto that.  I added  coverage for my 1995 Jayco relatively inexpensively.  Check to see what your current auto/homeowner policies will cover on your PU.  There is some overlap in coverage for me ...

That is expensive. Sorry. Could be because you live in hurricane country. I live in Southern California. I have SF insurance on everyhting. For my pop up, it's $36/year. My pop up is a 2002 Coleman Sun Valley which I bought new. It's always been $36.

I have to agree that insurance rates cannot be compared to others. Even in the same county but different towns or villages our rates vary quite a bit.

With that said we have Met Life for our house and auto so we get a discount and another discount because we buy from a group insurance (my wife's work) and another discount because she has payroll deductible. So when we added our 2006 Fleetwood Sante Fe it cost us a additional $82 per year for $100 deductible or we could of went with a $200 deductible for $70. As long as the trailer is new we will carry the insurance but after 7 or 8 years we will probably drop it like we did for our boat.

I had origionally insured my camper with State Farm (I've had State Farm for more than 25 yrs) but it was so expensive :yikes:  that I switched to someone that only handled campers and I now pay $125/yr. The company I use is Foremost.

I'm in Illinois.  My insurance is through USAA.  If liability is all I wanted for the PU it would have been free and covered in with my current auto plan.

But we opted for full coverage.  250 deductible on collissions. 50 deductible for those things covered under "comprehensive".  For that coverage on my 2006 Jayco Jay Series 1007 I pay $76 per year.

Try the online quote for Progressive (http://www.progressive.com) Insurance.  I let my PU insurance with CampingWorld's GMAC lapse because progressive had a much better price.

Price will vary based on your location, and other factors, as mentioned.

Our insurance is also with USAA.  We have a $250 deductible and pay $60 per year.  We live in the northwest Chicago suburbs.

Please note you must be eligible for USAA.  It used to only be open for officers families but I believe they started offering the coverage to all military years ago.

It never hurts to check around.

Should I get more quotes?  SF maybe?

Ditto from us.  We have Home, Life, 2 Auto, Drift Boat, Jewelry with State Farm.
Our PUP was very cheap and quick to insure.

I have farmers Insurance and my PU would of been cheaper with them. but the dealer was promoting  RvAmerica insurance. I wound up taking the RvAmerica insurance for a few reasons even though it was more money.
RvAmerica included the following:
full coverage on PU,
towing coverage for PU,
plus a lot more items
but the biggie for me is GUARANTEED total loss replacement for get this 5 YEARS.
they will replace my PU even if it cost more than what I paid for it.
I believe my cost per year is $140.00 and totally worth it on a brand new PU.

Off my head, I don't know what we pay for insurance.  But our insurance agent suggested we drop the comprehensive over the winter, and put it back on in the spring.  We've been doing that since moving to Minnesota, because the winters are long and it ends up being worth the bother.

Last spring, before we had put up the insurance, we got a call...Uncle Carl had passed away.  We needed to go to far northern New York, and we needed to leave now.  We left early in the morning, hours before the insurance agent was out of bed, under-insured (yes, it was legal).  We left a message, policy number, plate number, & our cell phone number on her answering machine.  She called back needing more info, and left a message (we were in rural Wisconsin at the time).  When we got the message and returned her call, she was out.  She called back when we were again out of range...we were insured, and we never actually spoke to each other.

We have had SF ins for everything including our house for about 30 yrs.  I added the pup and it cost me $6.00 a month. It covers hail and wind and all the other things that are acts of God and anything else that could happen.

We have Erie insurance with our vehicles and to add our Viking with comp and collision and a $100 deducable it cost us $75 a year in PA. For full coverage on a 2005 Viking that is good I think.

Title: Update on pu insurance costs...
Post by: madkatz1 on Apr 24, 2006, 07:15 PM
Thanks to all for your replys about what you pay for pu insurance.

Armed with all this information I called back SF and asked them again what it would cost me. The $200/yr. previously quoted to me now went down to $66/yr!  I asked why such a difference in prices and she didn't have any idea. So, it pays to do your homework.... and to get great advice from all you forum folks out there!

I just bought a policy from Wayfarer (//www.wayfarerinsurance.com) on a new Coachmen Clipper 1265ST (same as the Viking) at a cost of $234 per year.  Its a fairly comprehensive policy.  I don't believe the price changes by region (of Canada) but it is definitely reflective of the cost of the trailer (mine was $14K incl taxes)

Update - 1st telephone quote: $200/yr ---
2nd telephone quote: $66/yr (bought it) ---
Recently received in the mail: Policy for 2005 PU, $28 premium for 6 months ($56/yr), $500 deductible Comprehensive, $500 deductible Collision and a $38 refund check (overpayment or rating change which reduced my premium).
Then SF issued the policy based on a 4 wheel trailer rather than the 2 wheel trailer that I have.
Is this a good policy? Comp/Col too high? Should I tell them I have a 2 wheel instead of the 4? Does it matter?
All the confusing tow rating numbers and now insurance numbers??? I'm about 2 seconds away from going insane!:eyecrazy:

Ours is 57.96/year on a 20 year old popup. Not sure what it covers. We got it when we were poor(er). May have to revisit this. It may just be liability...not sure. I wanted insurance in case the trailer became disconnected and caused an accident.

Jeanie, does your policy cover full replacement in case your PU is stolen or destroyed?.........Ed

I just logged onto my State Farm site.  On my '06 Cobalt $250 deductible for $89/year, here is the policy description:
"Physical Damage
For travel and camping trailers Physical Damage Coverage includes comprehensive, collision and emergency road service. "

As far as I know, comp covers weather damage, theft, vandalism, and other damages that are out of my control.  Collision covers things that are my fault.  I have had emergency road service on my auto and they have paid every claim I have made, although they reduced payment when I tried to claim towing further than the closest decent sized town.
I could probably get the deductible reduced, but I am not uncomfortable with $250 at all.

That is good to know. I have USAA too and plan on purchasing coverage for our Pop-up through the as well.

By the way all Military personnel are authorized, as are their dependants. I love USAA!

Hi Ed - I've been trying to decipher the lawyer-ese writing on my policy. Nothing about full replacement, but comprehensive does pay for theft, fire, vandalism, malicious mischief and other acts of nature.  How much they pay is another story and I have to cough up $500 for the deductible.
The collision pays for "collision with another object" and excludes most acts of nature. (another $500 deductible!)  I guess when the comp doesn't cover something the collision takes over and v/versus. I will have to see my agent in person to see what the hell I really have and what's really covered.
They really shouldn't make it so difficult to understand!
