I am looking on EBay for a Prodigy brake controller. I have seen versions 2.4 and the newer 2.6 for sale. Anyone know the difference between the two and is there any reason not to buy the older version 2.4?
I'm also looking to upgrade to the prodigy from a voyager and am seeing V2.4 and V2.6. I just called 1-800-STOP-YOU. The Tekonsha help line. According to them there is no difference between the two. They are identical. The 2.4 or 2.6 is just a callorbation number that the engineers use? I work in the computer industry and am used to seeing version numbers change as a result of a software update.
I've seen a lot of comments with a O.L (overload) return on the prodigy. Some threads you read people are basically stripping their axle assemblies down in the trailer trying to find a short. I want to upgrade to the prodigy for ease of use not to give me another headache :D I did see in one thread that the person had not grounded to the negative on his battery. When he did, his O.L went away.

You have to wire the brake controller to your vehicle. My Explorer came pre-wired for a brake controller. With the vehicle there was the "Ford" side of the wire harness. With the Prodigy came the "controller" side of the wire harness. By buying the wire harness I didn't have to connect the 2 sets of wires together. I just plugged the purchased wire harness into the Prodigy and the other end of the harness into the plug on my Explorer. Plug and play simple. :)

Yes, more than likely. Your truck is pre-wired up to a point under the dash. You will then need a harness to plug into that point and bring the wires out to plug into the control head (Prodigy, etc.).

You can buy it if you like, but you should have received a pigtail for that plug from Ford with the vehicle. Wiring should be as follows:
Green - stop lamps
Red - Battery Feed
Brown - Illumination feed
Blue - Trailer Brakes
White - Ground
When you get your controller it will also include a pigtail that plugs into the controller and has a bunch of wires at the other end. There will be instuctions explaining what the colored wires should be hooked up to. If you can read directions and have a wire crimping tool, you do not need to buy the pre-made pigtail. The only thing to keep in mind is follow the directions and NOT the colors as the color codes are not standardized. Just place both sets of instructions side by side and match up the appropriate wires. Keep in mind you may not use all the wires coming from the Ford pigtail. I made one for my last controller and it took about 5 minutes. If you buy a used controller with the pigtail already made up for someone else's vehicle, just cut of the end you don't need and match the wires using the instructions.

Thanks guys - I'll pass along to the hubby all your info, I guess we'll go for it and if it looks horrible we'll by the ford thing, however, he if mechanically inclined I doubt he'll have issues.
You could just get a bunch of Scotchlock wiring connectors. That's what I had to do on my TV because there was no trailer adapter available. The Scotchlock splices into an existing wire with the squeeze of a pliers and ads an extension wire that you can hook into your controller. It makes a good safe connection. Although, I highly suggest getting the adapter. It makes a much cleaner, easier installation. I just thought that I would point this out as an option for others that may be reading this thread. I alway keep a box of these around, just in case I need to splice into a wire somewhere.
