Title: mildew mildew mildew
Post by: jsesere on May 24, 2006, 11:31 PM
We are new to the northwest and found that after opening our p/u after the winter rains that we had been attacked by the dreaded mildew. We have it on our canvas, curtains and matress covers. Help! How do we clean the affected areas?

We had small black dots of mildew on our bunkend tops one year, after a particualrly rainy season. I took a spray bottle and put 1 part bleach to 3 parts water in it, lightly sprayed and then wiped with a towel. The spots did fade.

I'm not sure how extensive your mildew is, though.

Since we've been using Damp-Rid consistently, we have not had the problem again.

I think all PUPers have had this problem at one time or another.  As a preventative, the Damp Rid that comes in the little buckets works pretty good.  We keep four in our PUP.  It may be overkill, but it works.  Damp Rid also has a spray to clean mildew, and it works great.  You don't have to scrub or anything, just spray on.  We get some condensation when the camper is closed up, so we use this every now and then.  You need to be able to unzip your windows though because it smells like it's 110% bleach.  Make sure the camper canvas is dry when you pack up.  If it isn't, set it back up to dry when you get home.  Hope this helps.

Can you purchase Damp Rid at most stores like Walmart or Kmart?

Yes, it is usually found in the household cleaner aisle at Wal-Mart.

A friend recommended a product called X-14.  I sprayed in on the awning mildew.  It was gone within thirty seconds.  Don't use it on cloth, it's like bleach with an attitude.

I got a tub of silica for drying flowers at Hobby Lobby, pretty cheaply.  It's lasted a couple of seasons so far & when we popped it up this weekend, after more than a year put in storage everything was just fine.  The towels that were accidentally left in the PU didn't even have a musty cooped up smell.
