Title: raising roof with canoe on roof?
Post by: PLJ on Jun 04, 2006, 08:20 PM
We are looking at buying a canoe and/or a kayak. We are a family of 5 so one canoe is going to be a bit of a squeeze  :p  They will sit happily on the pup, we have the yakima rails already installed.

My question is when at home and opening the camper to check things out pre-trip etc, would it be an issue to raise the roof with the canoe/kayaks still attached. We do not have an A/C on the pup. The canoe would weigh approx 65 pounds. The Kayak approx 50 pounds

thanks

Do you have an A/C on the PU?  Most manufacturers have a roof limitation of somewhere around 300 lbs with the roof down and 150 lbs with the roof up.  An A/C weighs around 110 lbs.

So, if you have an A/c, no it would not be recomended to raise with the stuff on the roof.  But, if there is no A/c it should be OK.

Most all PU's since the begining of time have had a 150 pound weight limit when raised. That includes the awning and racks as well as anything you put on them.

Considering you don't have an A/C and total weight is around 115# you should be all right with that... How much does that rack weigh?

You might want to make sure you didn't pick a windy day to do it.  An A/C unit may way 110 pounds but a canoe can create a lot of twisting motion if a wind comes up.

You should be ok with them on the roof.:)
