Title: Howls with Wolves
Post by: AustinBoston on Aug 31, 2006, 08:42 AM
My appologies to the Kevin Costner movie...

We will be camping near Ely, MN this weekend, where we will visit the International Wolf Center (http://www.wolf.org/wolves/index.asp).  Among other programs, we have reservations for the Wolf Communication program.  This will end with an attempt to get the local wolves to answer our "howls".

We will also be visiting the Soudan Underground Mine State Park (http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/soudan_underground_mine/index.html) and the Soudan Underground Labaratory (http://www.soudan.umn.edu/).

The State Park includes an old iron ore mine (taconite) and includes a tour that goes over 1/2 mile underground.

The lab is (among other things) attepting to track neutrinos fired at it from Chicago, Ill. (almost 500 miles away).

Anybody else camping in Northern Minnesota this weekend?

Austin

I wish I could, but that certainly sounds intresting. I'll make sure to add it to my list.

I wish.  Sounds like an awesome weekend ... course I haven't heard you howl yet.   ;)

My parents really liked the Soudan Underground Mine tour.  I haven't had the chance to see it yet.  Haven't been to Ely yet either.  They're both on the 'to do someday' list!  It's still kind of a long drive with the kids.

If you run into Spirit Deer while you're there ~ say hello for me.

Oh!  and have a great time!
