Title: Different type of Camper
Post by: southpennrailroad on Sep 14, 2006, 08:28 PM
Just because some people don't have pop ups doesn't mean they can't have a decent cover over their heads, enjoying the comforts of pop ups or hybrids. I have a new enclosed trailer and enjoy it maybe even more then a PU. I can pull into a site and just park it and off I go to see the local sites. Isn't it possible to have a topic on different ideas others may have on this? It has electric that I installed, as well as a queen size bed. Plenty of storage and I am working on an awning as well as possible water hook ups. I've checked other camper sites on the web and feel that this might be worth looking into. Many people look when I pull in and just like Fiberglass trailers they look close.

Aren't there completely other forums for this?  Other than a PopUp forum?

Kind of like a Chevy owner complaining nobody posts about them on a Ford forum...LOL

Try http://www.rv.net/forum/ (//%22http://www.rv.net/forum/%22) or http://irv2.infopop.cc/ (//%22http://irv2.infopop.cc/%22)

Well now, since the 'locals' feel the need to run you out of town, you could try the two mentioned above. There is also a new site for ANY & ALL RV's created by the owner of PUX/HYX called RV Itch (http://hyx316.win.aplus.net/rvitch/forum/default.asp) which you'll fit right in there too!

I am interested in seeing what you have.  My father talked about converting a enclosed trailer into a camper once.  Do you have any problems with campgrounds turning you away for not having a "real" camper?  Before I purchased the pop up from my dad, I had thought of building a "teardrop".  But, at that time, I was still single, and wouldn't have minded it.  Now, married with a baby on the way, I wouldn't think of putting my wife and child through "roughing it" that way.  Post some pics.

I just saw an Antigua camper in a dealership lot.  It had hardsides with pull-out canvas bunks on the ends, much like a PU but does not fold down.  Is this sort of what you're talking about?  Or is yours a really heavily modified PU?  There's also hardside PU's that fold down, no canvas, and no bunk ends to pull out.  Like Brainpause I would LOVE to see some pics, too.  Been looking into a hardside PU, even though I just bought my Westlake this past July (boy am I hooked on PU's :D !)

Yeah, stick around and lets see the trailer!
Title: Danzer Trailer
Post by: southpennrailroad on Sep 24, 2006, 10:29 PM
The reason I decided upon this type of trailer was the quick drop off of the trailer so I can get out into the woods as well as research documents in Harrisburg to do the history of the South Penn railroad. I really wanted a pop up but the cost was high for my budget as well as I would have to waste set up time. Like some of you I wanted everything set up and leave when I wanted. But the other reason I didn't want a PU was the heat that is stored up in it if left in the sun. I spent a year deciding what I wanted as well as making payments on this trailer. I bought it new from the factory in Hagerstown MD. Saved the shipping cost and my wife and I spent that money on the trip down to pick it up. Better spent on us then a shipper. Money is real tight for us and two reasons for getting it was better then picking it up at the dealer.

I actually went to a trailer dealer in Apollo, Pa to see just how hot they (PU) gets and was sweating as I walked inside a brand new display and afterward, I went straight home afterward and opened my Danzer and it was cooler inside. The sky was still coudless when I got home in mid afternoon. I will post photos tomorrow.

I so far have only camped in SP (Gilford Pinchot SP) and a lot of private property owners that the railroad right of way is on have given me permission to use their land as base sites. Have not used their lands yet, but will probably do so next year.

My bed and yes I can expand it for my wife to come along. I just happened to be on a single person trip and needed storage for my material that I display.

Looking through the screen the porta pottie is seen and is layed on drawer hardware for storage beneath the bed. I want a fridge installed later for next year.

That looks interesting.

Does it have any windows?

Yiou may want to look into putting in skylights like they have on sheds to improve the lighting.  Very interesting.

Money is the problem in the first place that I decided to buy this trailer. Second, the vent puts out enough light. Third. It is a single piece roof. I will not want to create leaks. I spend a lot of time thinking before doing anything. I purchased it a year ago or made payents and read the forums that long as to do things like POP UP owners do to make camping simple.

I've enjoyed reading the forums and getting ideas from your great experiences. I've learned a lot as to what I wanted for the price. Windows are being thought over, but I may  want to park on streets over night and this set up is less conspiculous then a camper. A trailer with window doesn't look normal to triailers parked on streets. If I do it will be in the back doors only.

Thanks all for your understanding and intereat.

By the way it cost me... taxes and plates, on the road $2,502.00 It's mine and paid for and I've used it four times this year already. It's cooler then a POP UP (direct sun) and I sleep in it in the summer and even now. I use a fan and when I want to take a nap I use it also.

Sounds like you have the most important factor; the best camper is the one you will use.

Cool!  That is exactly what my dad had thought of building.  The only thing that prevented him from doing it was that we were afraid that some of the private campgrounds may have not let him camp during a trip that he took earlier this year.  He had purchased the pop up, but didn't try raising it at the dealer before he purchased it.  He's 75 and tried to raise it while he was at my home and it was a bit much for him, especially after driving all day.  He opted to just stay in motels, much easier on him.  Windows would be nice, but would take away from the "stealth camping factor".  I like the idea that you can just park about anywhere and nobody knows you're there....

Well, it depends on how tall you are as to the comfort of laying side ways in the trailer. I am 5.5 and my wife is 5.2 and we sleep comfortably this way. Sometimes I don't like my feet touching a wall as that happens at times. But I just climb right back up onto the pillow when that happens. .5" is all the room I have. I also plan not to be staying in private campgrounds as I will mostly stay in SP. Also I am plannig on private property along the turnpike as it is my center of my research on my hobby. At least I am not spending $80.00 a night any longer.

Thanks for the welcome. I was always one to try and get done with what others have without spending what I don't have as in money. I thought about this for a number of years. Wife wasn't happy at first. At times she just out right was nasty about it but once I got  the trailer, she now wants to camp out more. I took a year to pay forit and during that period I read many forums and picked up many ideas. As soon as we  did our first trip I felt like a pro. Your experiences became my experiences. I recall when we did (not often)  went tent camping, our site always looked dis-organized. Now we only keep the cooler outside the trailer.

Below is our first trip to Gilford Pinchot, State Park. Harrisburg, Pa.

IT LOOKS GREAT!  It's almost like the old "scampies", simple but effective.  Glad to hear your other half loves it as much as you do, nothing better than to share something as great as that with someone you love!

OH! I am working on that. I am just looking for the right ones. For a while I will use christmas lights. I have to get an outlet installed outside first.
