Title: Who is going camping for Thanksgiving?
Post by: Starryart on Oct 15, 2006, 11:25 AM
I can't wait!!!! We are going camping for Thanksgiving at nearby Lake Texana SP. We are taking the PU down on Nov 16 and stay until the 26. 10 days-Yahoo!!!
We do have to work some during that time but since the CG is only 35 min from home we can drive in to work. I teach middle school and I only work the Tues and Th of Thanksgiving week. Think I'll take a personal day off on the 18th just to start the trip. DH has to work on more days but he will travel to and from.
My brother and his family are camping too. We are going to cook the feast together. Last year we did the same Thanksgiving campout and brother did brisket  and I cooked a large dutch oven baked chicken. Yum Yum YUM! Then my mom and step dad join us for the day. We ate and sat by the lake having a good ol' family time. :-()
We had decent south Texas weather last year, let's hope for the same this year.
If the weather is clear on Sat the 25 the local Astronomy club I belong to will host a star gaze at the park. That is always a fun event. Gotta take my telescope! Can't wait!!!!!!
Any one else got plans?

I have a 4 day weekend, Thursday through Sunday, but dinner is at my Mom's house on Thursday.  I am thinking about camping at Assateague Island National Seashore in MD, so that I can go to the Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge in VA to see the snow geese.  Usually on Thanksgiving weekend they allow you do drive on parts of the refuge that are closed except for foot traffic.:)

We may do something local...depending on leave availability and the willingness to use it...We will likely go to Killens Pond if we do and the weather permits.

Humm would you want company?  That would be less towing for me, but more driving to get to Chincoteague.  I might have to think about going there and I would have electric.:D

I agree with that.

You are picking up your new trailer on my Mom's birthday.  I have a doctors appointment that day and DS has an orthodontist appointment.  You have the most fun thing going on.  Picking up your new PU.:D

We have the extended family at our house for Thanksgiving, but weather permitting usually get in one more weekend starting Friday morning.

Fall camping is my favorite, but won't go if it is too terribly cold.  Not into winter camping!

Well.  Happy Birthday to your Mom.

I don't know -- signing up for a bunch of payments may not be much fun...But probably better than the Doctor or Dentist. ;)

Ocean Lakes CG Myrtle Beach, SC
11/20-26....I will be down all week. my family well arrive by Wednesday morning..
We will have 7-8 other families coming down by Wednesday evening. So we will have a traditional Thanksgiving day meal with some type of Turkey and /or ham.
We have fried one, cooked one on grill, crock-potted a turkey breast and have had 10 lbs of potatoes one other time..SO we are open to doing something different this year.
You ever see 10lbs of potatoes at one time thats a big ole' bowl of mashed taters...
We assign each family 2 different choices on the veggie, dessert, bread side and we all chip in on the turkey or ham or both.
We can feed our group and another if needed most years..
That will be my last trip of the year until sometime in late Feb or March 2007.

I'm going to take the week off and head out Sunday with my 3 year old son.  My wife and daughter will hop on Amtrak after school on Wednesday to meet us in San Luis Obisbo.  We'll have about 34 people from my dad's extended family at the KOA there.

Thanksgiving dinner will be some sort of potluck affair.  I plan to cook two turkeys in my Weber Smokey Mountain cooker and my brother will deep fry another.  There will be three RV's with ovens in the group so all the traditional fixin's should be available.

We will be camping at a NACO/Thousand Trails Resort that we belong to called Turtle Beach.  It is located outside Manteca, CA, about 1-1/2 hours from Sacramento.   We will be with my full-timer friends and her parents.   This will be the 3rd year we will be doing Turkey Day with them.  We fry a turkey as well, but we brine it first.  I'll post the brine recipe in the recipe forum again.  If you try it I want to warn you, because there is soy sauce in the brine it will turn the skin on the turkey brown and when you fry it, it will make the skin much darker, but it is still OK and good.

Wow and I'm worried about camping in VA this weekend...I have a campground timeshare/membership in Frederickburg, VA

Assateaque Island is about 8 miles from where I will be during Thanksgiving.  My mother lives in Mystic Harbour about 1 mile down on the left after you get on Rt 611 from RT 50.
Hey - maybe my son and I could come down and say "Hi"  :W

:%   I want to go somewhere, anywhere, preferably warm!
Alas, I'll be camping in my usual Thanksgiving spot - the breakroom at work.  Yep, work.  Doing double duty that day so others can be with family (ain't I nice?).  At least there's a big screen TV in the breakroom.  Picnic basket full of turkey treats, football on TV, camp lounge chair, maybe a good book to read.  What more can a working gal want?  :p

We go by Mystic Harbor all the time when we camp at Assateague.  We have to go to West Ocean City several times when we are there.  I am hoping to make down to the Chincoteague Wild Life Refuge during the trip.  I think the snow geese are there during that time.  It would be nice to meet you.  Check out the thread in the COTOC club section here at PUT.  There is information in the November camping thread.:)

Not going camping, but we are going to see Mickey Mouse in Florida the following week. I'll have almost two weeks (11 days) off! Only have to take 5 days vacation for it, too!

Killens would be about 60 miles NNW of Ocean City, just South of Felton, Delaware.

StarryArt, I envy you!  This evening I went online to get Reservations for Thanksgiving Day and the two days after.  I was surprised to see how few sites are left for those looking for W&E hookups within three hours drive, and I thought I was being early!

I haven't progressed yet into being able to camp without hook ups, but it seems that maybe on Holiday weekends that would make it easier to find places.

Holiday weekends usually book up faster than a non-holiday weekend, at least in my area.  Dry camping is very doable, enjoy if you give it a try.:)

Tracy is right. OurTX Cgs book up full for any Holiday. We make our reservations. months in advance even if we are not sure we can go. I figure we can cancel later if it is a no go. Better safe than sorry.
Funny how on Thanksgiving day, you can walk down the road passing by the rvs and smell the turkeys baking or frying in the propane fryers. AAHH! Then there are some who buy their turkey dinner from Luby's so they don't have to spend the day cookin'.
Like I said, we cook a big ol chicken in the dutch oven. Yum! Smack!

We've decided that the weather is not condusive to a pop-up at the beach this weekend. the outer banks are going to be rainy 40-50 degrees and wind gusts in the 40-60 mph range, not pop-up weather. so we're staying home this year. Happy Thanksgiving everybody.
