Title: Wow! The Prices of Fleetwood's Highlander Series
Post by: kimrb266 on Dec 03, 2006, 09:49 PM
I was checking things out on RVtrader.com and found that Fleetwood's Highlander Series' prices are over the top.

Avalon - $20,000+
Sequoia - $16,500+
Niagara - $ $18,000+

Americana Series - Utah - $14,700+

Even if they took a couple thousand off the top, the prices are outragous.  We paid $13,000 for our 05 Niagara and thought that was alot but now, WOW!  Most of the prices above are more expensive than our new hybrid.

What are they thinking?

That is why it's not unusual for Fleetwood PU dealers to "knock off" 40-50% when push comes to shove.  And still make a profit.

My theory is that they know that PUPs are the very first introduction to RVs for many new and green off the street customers.  Most don't know what any RVs cost, so the salesmen simply throw out a price for a PU ,(with a rediculous profit margin for them), hoping that the newbee will bite.  It's not until a newbee PU shopper does their due diligence that they discover what others have paid.

There has never been an RV "Window Sticker".  Unlike the Monroney Sticker (http://autopedia.com/html/monroneysticker.html) we are all familair with on automobiles, RV dealers can charge whatever the free market will bear. Caveat emptor!

It's also not a coincidence that as soon as it became common for fulltimers to liquidate ALL of their stick-based real estate holdings, that the prices of ClassA motorhomes quickly shot through the roof.  The free-market economy in action.  Capitalism, ya gotta love it!

As a newbie, I bought my 2004 Fleetwood Westlake for $9K.  The actual sale price was about $13K.  I had done some homework before purchasing and knew what my budget was.  I wasn't going to budge from the budget!  With taxes I think it came to about $10,500 which was very reasonable considering that it had a lot more features than the new ones for $17K!

Point is, do your homework, know your budget, and negotiate like heck... did the same thing with my TV, too.

Yup, Mike has it right.

Peco prices:
Avalon - $15,395
Sequoia - None in stock
Niagara - $ $13,895+

Americana Series - Utah - $10,295

So you see there is quite a difference between MSRP and real world prices.

You are soooo right about Pecos. We jus bought a 2007 fleetwood bayside from them fully loaded a/c furnace etc. and only paid $10,950. They were the nicest people that you could ask for. No pushy sales people or trying to get you to buy things you did not want nor need. Check them out

When I first thought about buying a trailer I started looking at manufacturer sites and then checked out prices.

I live in Saskatchewan Canada and no one here would bring one in.  I asked on dealer to check on a price and he quoted a niagara at $24 500.00 plus taxes etc.  He said that was his bottom line price.

He said they are beautiful trailers but is people are going to spend that kind of money they will just by a hybrid or travel trailer.

A new hybrid with the same amenities etc he sels for $18 900.00

Bet the amount of Niagara's in Canada sold is very far and few between.

Then I started to look at prices and found a great Coleman Shenandoah with shower, cassette toilet, furnace and awning and all the other goodies for $5900

Penguinluvr welcome to PUT.  It sounds like you have a nice trailer at a reasonable price.

My dealer Rhone's Travel Trailers near Williamsport, PA has the following prices as of September 2006.

Sequoia $11,516
Niagara $12,795
Arcadia $12,695
Avalon $14,195

Utah HW $9,295
Williamsburg $9,895
Bayside HW $9,695

When I orignially started this thead I thought how rediculous it is that the dealers would advertise at those outragious prices.  If someone who didn't know anything about pup's looked there to purchase, they would be scared away from their pricing.  Sure, if you bargain, you will get them down but someone who's green might think that price is it and that they can't afford one.

Here in CA, the prices from Peco's aren't realistic.  We paid $13,000 for our 05 Niagara and now they're over $14,000+.  Everything is more expensive here.

K&R it depends. One of the members over at RV.net; Beacher is from somewhere in CA and he's helped a couple of folks with dealerships that he claims actually beat Peco's prices.
Whether or not he full of it I can't say, but for any CA folks that are paying higher prices you could contact him for some help.

Hello kinrb266,

If we havn't met already at a previous SCCampers rally, I'll be right next door to you at Flying Flags.:D

People pay more in Southern California, only if they don't know any better!  We have the luxury of having many Fleetwood PU dealers in the area, and they compete very aggressively four your business.

IF you know HOW to negotiate, (and are willing to work a little), you can get as much as 40% off, I did it.  I paid $8,000 for a fully loaded "$12,500 posted price" 2004 GTE Niagara.  I did it again for my sister's PU, and a few neighbors.  Always far better than Peco's prices.

BTW, you should have not paid more than $13,000 "out the door" for a fully loaded 2005 Niagara with ALL the options, A/C, battery, 2nd propane tank, hitch, and sales tax included!

I believe we got a decent deal for our 05 Niagara.  We did our homework and even had the salesman doing some phone calls.

We definitely got a deal on our 07 Kodiak 214.  We were quoted almost $20k earlier in the year and was told that it was going up due to higher fuel charge.  We came in a month or so ago and started talking options to the same salesman and he quoted us $17,200, in writing.  He made a mistake and should have quoted the 20k.  He notified us of the mistake and they are sticking to it.  Good for us and bad for them.  They can make it up on another customer.

I feel a little ripped off. :(  We paid $10,500 for our 2007 Williamsburg.
We thought it was a good price when we purchased it 2 months ago.:yikes:
I guess like anything else, be happy with what your deal at the time, because there is always a better deal somewhere else. (and always after you paid for yours!:( )
Really other than a few shake down bugs, we really enjoy our new PUP.
After 20+ years of sleeping on the ground we decided it was time for a change.

Do your homework, checkout other dealers and then negotiate the best deal you can.

Title: eye on a 2004 Sequoia
Post by: Rawhide Kid on Jan 30, 2007, 12:59 PM
Hi all. I have been in search of a nice pop-up for the last year..:(

Negotiated on a few but didn't bite. My HOA doesn't allow hybrid's or I'd go that way I think.

Just found a nice 2004 Sequoia for about 8k - with ac (a must in Az).

Wondering if that is a good deal. Don't see any at Peco's but will look around on other sites for comp's. Wonder what you all think.

It looks like a nice one. We are a family of 6 total - wife and me and four kids ranging from 1 1/2 to 6 and two dogs. Have a nice Ford f150 that we just got for a TV and second vehicle. (balances out my Burgman Scooter for gas guzzling)

Thanks for any comments. Wondering if 8k is too much compared to an 06 out the door for 10k or so...

Rawhide Kid (sigh - will we ever get a popup?)

We sold our 05 Niagara to a guy who lives in AZ and he told us that there aren'[t very many 05 Niagaras in AZ.  The ones he found, he missed out on .  He even purchased w/o AC.

Rawhide Kid - We are a family of 5 and the Niagara was perfect for us.  The slide out gave us the extra room that we needed.  You may want to look at the Niagara's, you may be happier than in the Sequoia.
Title:
Post by: Rawhide Kid on Jan 30, 2007, 02:54 PM
Yes - I've looked at Niagara's but they are a bit too pricey here in AZ it seems.

I fully expect to be crowded in a Sequioa compared to a Niagara - but I do like the ability for all 6 of us to sit at that big table in the Sequioa. The slide out table area of the Niagara would be tight for all 6 of us - esp. as the kids get older.

We likely will sit outside a lot - under the awning. The AZ high country should offer nice temps to be able to do so.

thx for the note.

RK, 8K is a good price for a 2004 Sequoia. We bought a 2004 leftover with AC and a few added accessories (25 gal. gray water tank & an installed Prodigy brake controller) for $10,500. It is a great camper! There are only 2 of us and our dog Smokey. The dinette is huge and the galley has plenty of room and options if you're stuck inside. You also have 3 king sized beds for sleeping. We love the hardsided shower stall and the privacy it provides for using the cassette potti. The only negative I can think of is that there is no trunk. However, there is plenty of inside storage.

It tows great behind our 4.6L Mountaineer. We get about 15mpg on long distance trips.

If we had to do it all over again, I would buy another Sequoia in a heartbeat!  :)

If the family really likes it, I would offer them $7k and see what kind of response you get. If they won't budge on the price, maybe they will add a few accessories as added incentive.

Good luck!

If it is in good shape, it sounds reasonable.  Do what Wild Wild Quest suggest and low ball them.  See how bad they want to move the trailer.  Good luck and let us know how it comes out.:)

UGH!!! Got outbid at the LAST second!!! (sorry folks - this was on ebay)

Literally was high bidder with 3 seconds left and then was outbid. I'm ok but the emotional roller coaster is the PITS!! I've heard of sites were you can "snipe" a bid on ebay at the last second but never been the brunt of one. Wonder if it was a dealer bidding on it.

Wow. Oh well, I was at my high limit on it with my last bid so I would not have gone higher anyway.

Here's the ebay link if anyone is interested: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=003&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=130073520394&rd=1,1 (//%22http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=003&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=130073520394&rd=1,1%22)

Quote from: Rawhide Kid....Wonder if it was a dealer bidding on it. .

The shill has become an annoyance with Ebay.

I have recently participated in a few very similar auctions during the past couple of years.

Some red flags that there is a shill at work:

1. Hidden bidders, or "private listing - bidders' identities protected".
2. Losing an auction during the last few seconds, not minutes, or hours.
3. A small privately owned home Ebay business, or dealership usually are the culprits.  They want to raise the price.
4. You quickly see the same item relisted on Ebay a short time later, (even with the same artwork and description).

I just purchased a fleetwood arcadia.  base price was 12,699.  Out the door price with most available options and tax and license (CA) total was around 14,500.  This was 1500 to 2000 cheaper than other local dealers.  Not much to choose from in popups in So. Cal.  Would have bought used but there are no used Highlanders with the Arcadia's configuration so we were stuck.

We have a family of 5 and the slide-out dinette in the Niagara couldn't fit us all.  Once of us was always standing or the kids would get down to play while the the one standing snuck a spot.  This is why we purchased a hybrid with a U-shaped dinette.

Interesting...the exact same camper is back up for sale from the same seller.

$3,000 starting "bid" by one bidder. Must be a 3 days sale because i've been watching, it just came up, and there are only 2 days 15 hours left on it.

I'm going to try to go see it in person tomorrow. This is quite strange.

Shill at work? I'm starting to really wonder. No matter what, I won't bid any higher than I did last time. Maybe less given my suspicions.

Of course those of you in or around more populated areas have an advantage- Competition! When we were looking to replace  our totaled pop-up last summer, I was VERY interested in a Niagara. The best price we could find was $16+K, way too much for any pop-up in my opinion.
We ended up going with a Starcraft w/slideout dinette, kind of wish we'd gone with a a hybrid though.

We got ours at Marjon in Moreno Valley. Great dealership. Goes off of invoice and adds for whatever you need like hitch or anything xtra.

Great bunch of people over there.
We passed two dealerships to get to them!!

And the avalon is great! I figured out why we went with the avalon Popup. I t fits in the drive way! And there is 6 of us!

I have been looking for a Avalon for months now. I am in Utah, want to sell our 2005 niagara and get the Avalon. Where did you find your Avalon?
Title:
Post by: kimrb266 on Jul 10, 2007, 04:41 PM
I've seen an Avalon at Pacific Sales in Stanton, CA but that's a long way from UTAH.  Check with your local dealer and see if they have one or can get one for you.  You never know, you might get an 07 for a good price now.

We also had an 05 Niagara and LOVED it but sold it for a Hybrid.  When we went to our local RV show, I saw it and fell in love with the dinette.  The reason why we sold our Niagara was because the dinette wasn't big enough for 5 and the Avalon could accomodate us.  Instead, we purchased our hybrid for about the same price as the Avalon and we don't have to pop up/down.

Good luck in your search

It seems Salt Lake is a huge Rv community, they cannot keep them in stock, but I might wait until this fall. I am not positive I want to switch, but I love the dining area in the Avalon

Just want to thank everyone for their replies to this thread. The DW and I are in the process of making the transition from a tent.  I have to admit that while I did know the basics of what to look for as far a floorplans, extras, etc. Dealing with list  and "sale" pricing from dealers is new to me in this area and after visiting a few different places, I've been left with my head spinning.

I agree. They have great prices.  Price for Niagara without A/C was about $12900.  I am still debating between Niagara and Jayco Select.   Anybody have opinion?
