DH is on the South Beach and doing really well.  Thanks in part to my cooking to help him stick with it  :eyecrazy:   There is  alot of info out there on these diets and I had my doubts but he in down 25 pounds now and has a lot more info.  I am not as fortunate because with the diabetes I find it really hard to control my sugar without the carbs.  I feel better and eat a lot better cooking for him and have dropped some but no where near as much as him.  The book and the website have some great info.  The substitute potatoes (mashed cauliflower) went over ok but the sweet potato fries didn't cut the muster around here.  It is amazing though the hidden carbs and sugar we eat daily.  :yikes:   A good basic diet is probably the best way to go  that and regular exercise has helped me now control my blood sugars without the meds which is a bonus!!

I've tried various diets over the years (Atkins, my own plan, and South Beach) and have lost substantial weight, but eventually gained it back in each case!  The dedication and willpower doesn't seem to last.  Exercize always helps for any diet!!  Also, it is more supportive and helpfull when the DH and DW are in it together!

Both my doctor and dentist highly recommend weight-watchers, so that may be the next try!

Good luck!
Bob

I have been on the HMR program "Health Management Resourse".  It is one of the only diet programs that is endorced by the FDA, and is medically supervised.  It changes your thinking about calories in and out.  I have been on it for 7 weeks now and have lost 33lbs.  I average 4lbs a week.  This is a life style, not a diet....I was at a family gathering the other day and they had all kinds of goodies...I practically ran to the table to my delight because I was after pineapple!!! Not cookies or cake.  Have no desire for that stuff anymore....I have a lot of weight to loose still.  About 90lbs to go....After the initial weight loss period you go on maintenace for 18 months to help with the transition....I have tried them all in the past...Atkins, South Beach, etc.  But with this one, I don't feel like their is an end....

We have found that almonds and low fat string cheese are good snacks in between meals.

May be TMI, but we have also found that, although tasty, the Atkins chocolate stuff can make you have more gas than Exxon.

I've been  on the Girl Scout cookie diet lately. I can't say no to the cute little girls in their uniforms and I can't stop eating the cookies :eyecrazy:

I have several friends who have been on the Atkins Diet.  They lost lots of weight but eventually gained it back.  They found it hard to survive on the high protein diet and eventually gained it back.

Have you tried Weight Watcher?  I have found that it is the easiest way to lose weight.  You stay within a certain amount of points and you lose.  You can eat anything you want and still lose weight.

Well, so far, so good for me.  I've been on this about 12 days now, lost 10.5 lbs.  I can monitor blood sugar, it's dropped from 208 to 115 during the period.  I'm not hungry, and enjoying the foods I'm eating.  No cravings.  And I'm doing this with no exercise yet!  First I've ever lost serious weight without fiendish exercise.  Seems like something I could do for a  long time.

Have tried many other types of diets, same comments as above, "hard to survive and eventually gained it back".  Don't think that's specific to Atkins, they all take serious lifetime committment and control.

Life and weather situations haven't given me the opportunity to exercise yet.   Hoping to be able to start, maybe tomorrow (Saturday).  I've been contracted to play violin in the pit for a local High School musical (Oklahoma) that's been getting in the way of exercise, but the run is this weekend and will free up some time when it's over.   So, the show hasn't helped the exercise cause, but the money I make will pay for a camping trip or two!
