Title: Forced mod and chain mount question.
Post by: jakelaw on Mar 27, 2007, 09:03 PM
Ok, when we were leaving for our trip last weekend, the tongue jack gave out while I was cranking it up to hitch up.  Undaunted, I ran to Harbor Freight, and purchased a tilt up bolt on jack that works great.  It has been something I wanted to do for a while, mostly to create more room on the tongue, but could not bring myself to take off a perfectly good piece of equipment.  On to the question portion.  The safety chains were wrapped around the main part of the jack inside the tongue.  Now that I have removed the jack, I need suggestions on how to mount the chains.  I am assuming some type of bolts, but don't know what kind, etc.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks again.

The only suggestion that I have is to get grade "8" bolts and either double nut them or get lock-nuts.

Did you get the jack with the inflatable tire?

Grade 8 bolts as big as will fit thru the link.

Can I get these bolts at Lowes or somewhere?  Also, can I use standard washers, or are there special strong ones?

You should be able to get them at Lowe's but they will be in a special section, not with the regular bolts. Any washer will do. You just want to be sure that it is a good hard bolt that can take the shock.

Lowes also has grade eight washers (thicker) and nuts too. I've used these for mounting heavy duty jacks in my truck for off roading. It's worth the money for security.
