Title: Visited my local Camping World
Post by: CajunCamper on Jun 14, 2007, 11:20 AM
I visited my local Camping World last weekend. I know everyone has their own idea of what the camping experience should be like, but I gotta tell you. I didn't find much there that would add to or enhance my camping experience at all. Oh sure they had lots of things for your tow vehicle and a few neat gadgets, but man, they should change the name to "$400,000 Motor Home World". I'm sorry but I was not impressed. I guess I'm just a simple little southern boy that enjoys the fact that camping has the ability to get me away from all of that stuff.

I was disappointed when I went there for the first time as well.

You just gotta hit the sporting good stores for what you and I call camping.

CW's inventory is usually 30% to 100% overpriced compared to virtually any other RV related store, (even with their President's club discount).  If you don't mind overspending for the same Coleman stuff found anywhere else, in the past year they have expanded their Coleman "camping" section a tiny bit.

They really should have originally named the store "RVing World", being that very little of what they actually sell is considered strictly camping equipment.

I agree we went and were not impressed.  Very little good things, and the prices seemed high.

We found this place locally and visited last week, I would say a much better selection of things, and pretty good prices.

We have a camping world in our city.  We have lived here for 3 years and I have only gone in the store 2 times.  Both times was to try and get a part for the camper.  Both times they didn't have it.  No need to go there ever again.

Jacqui:

Thanks.  That's interesting to hear.  I have been thinking of heading up to the Rocklin store.  Never been to one.  I have been kind of hesitant because of the prices I saw on the website.  Even for the members the prices seem high.

I guess a call before I go would be a good idea to make sure they have what I need...and to check the price.

If you know what you need it would be worth a call.  If you need something for a motorhome like a $200 lounge chair or a new sofa it is the place but if you need a simple something or other go to Wally World.

I went there this weekend.  Forgot to call ahead.  Was feeling like an idiot cause I couldn't find what I needed.  Thought they were out.  Couldn't find anyone to help me.  Eventually I found it on my own.  Bought a Bal leveler.  Can't wait to try it out.

I saw that $200 lounge chair.  It looked just like the one I bought at Sports Authority for $40!

We love Bass Pro Shops and Cabella's but a good place to get good prices on camping gear would be local garage sales.  Most items are half of what you would pay in a store and people buy them and never use them so most are in great shape.

We've had good luck with sleeping bags, blankets, cooking utensils. etc at the Salvation Army Family Thrift Store.  Some of the stuff looked like it had never been used.  They get alot of camping/sporting goods too.
