Title: Naming Your Popup
Post by: Techrangerbrad on Jun 22, 2007, 12:51 PM
So the wife and I are debating whether or not the popup needs a name - quite frankly, I feel it personalizes it a bit.  So in honor of its size, I decided to name it:  "The Beast"  however she doesn't like that name so now the great debate ensues - So did you name your popup and what did you name it?  For those of you who like to pontificate, why did you name it what you named it?

I named our popup Eugene. It just fit. Kind of like when you pick a name for your dog.

In our case, someone else picked the name.  In 2002, we were camping in Mammoth Cave National Park with a pop-upper who goes by GeeMan.  There was a friendly banter about how tiny his pop-up was and how big our pop-up was, and he used the term Taj Majal to describe ours.  We adjusted it to Taj MaHaul and have used it ever since.

Well, since we're both from the mountains (me:VA, her: KY), and she's related to the Hatfield's of the Hatfield McCoy feud, we figured we're really hillbillies at heart.  But the pup is in 100% mint condition, with all options and a few mods.  So Hilton came to mind.  Hence, The "Hillbilly Hilton"!

If you remember, a few years ago, California elected a new governor. Many people started calling him "The Governator" after his Terminator movies.

Right about that time I bought a Ford van, had it raised, installed a 4x4 system and had the interior made into a class B motor Home. The first time I took the van to the beach, my buddies started calling it "The Russinator"

A year or so later we decided that the van was just too small for us so we bought our first PU. I don't remember who decided to name it, but, it's been know as "The Donnanator" ever since [Donna's my wife's name].

If I did this the correct way, below will be a photo of both units.

Yes...we named our PUP. Quite frankly, I am not sure if we would have had it not been for seeing all the unique names the folks on this (and other) board came up with. So, when deciding on a name, we went with "Patches"...for VERY obvious reasons. There were quite a few areas on the canvas that were in need of repair, and instead of spending $800 on new canvas, I went about putting canvas patches all over the place. I didn't even bother trying to match the existing canvas, I just went with whatever they had on sale at the fabric store, lol. The original canvas is a royal blue, and her patches are rust, denim, and navy. She is truly worthy of her name...but we love her nonetheless!! I even painted the word "Patches" on her door in the same color and script as the wording on the camper. This year I added a wooden sign that I made myself (learned how to use a dremel) that we hang on the bunk end. I have been known to describe her as true "trailer trash"...all in good humor, though!

we had god intentions of naming the PUP, but we find ourselves referring to it always as "the Little camper" slurring over little (lil), so I guess that is what it's name will be.

Ours is quite simply named the pop up house.  We chose it because it is how we describe it to our great dane.  He gets excited every time we start loading the "pop up house" cause he knows he gets to go.  We have a canary yellow Nissan Xterra that we tow with.  So if you see "big bird" towing the "pop up house" with Harley the great dane hanging is head out the window be sure to honk at us.

My first camper was a Jayco, and the DH called it...Beckie's Folly.....but now we have another and it is just called...the camper.  Oh well, maybe we should name her.

Beckie's Folly ~ I like that.

When Beckie's Folly moved from Hershey PA to Minnesota, my kids renamed her Hershey cuz that's where she came from.  My son still wants to paint it so it looks like a giant chocolate bar!  And we think she's the sweetes thing on Earth.   :D

Our son named our PU Clarabel-from the Thomas the Train characters. That's what we refer to the PU as. For those of you who aren't up on Thomas-Clarabel is a coach that is pulled by an engine.
In my signature I refer to the PU as the DNC camper. That what I planned to call the camper. During summer of 04 the Democratic National Convention came to Boston. I spent many weeks working and was not able to camp as much that summer. But it did enable me to make extra money to buy the camper. Maybe I'll change my signature.

We weren't too creative in naming our Rockwood popup "Rocky."

While following a Hornet trailer on the interstate, my son quipped "I'm glad, dad, that you didn't get a Hornet."

When we came home with our PUP 2 years ago, a friend saw it and said sarcastically,"Boy that's really Roughing It!" so the name kinda stuck.
We just altered the spelling a bit for our dog's sake."Ruffin' It"

Wife and I tried out several names and kept calling it "The Pup." I know it's not original, but Pup (being also diminuative for "puppy") sounds cute, as is "The Pup."

It is so much fun to see that we all share a common love of camping.  And a unique relationship with our campers, well-loved all.  Our Taj MaHaul is our first, and although she is showing some signs of travelling hard there are memories inside those canvas walls!
