Title: How many amps do I need?
Post by: sandykayak on Jul 31, 2007, 02:00 PM
I'm having a hard time finding a CG in north/central Fl over the labor day weekend.

Frequently the messages says that there is nothing available with my selections in the "spot with" section.

I am selecting "pets allowed," "water hook-up," and "30 amps" electricity.

Assuming that "water hook-up" is the same as having a plain ol faucet to connect a hose to, that leaves the electricity selection as an option I might be able to change.

I have an 8' box Jayco Qwest with a/c.  Do I have to have a min of 30 amps, or could I select 20 amps, or 15 amps to see if that will show some available sites.

thanks, y'all

If you don't want limitations on your A/C, you need 30 amps

Agree. If no AC, and no other high-draw items (microwave, hair dryer, etc.), you can go to 15amp.

If you leave the ac off :eyecrazy: then you could probably get away with 15 amp.

If you turn everything else off, you might get away with 20 amp and use the a/c, depending on the size of the a/c, how stable the voltage is at the campground (most are only OK, some are terrible), and how well the breaker will sustain the startup surge.  In other words, you're on your own...

On the other hand, the campgrounds may only have 50A sites available. I would check them all and take whatever is available.

Most campsites that have 50A service are also equipped with 15A outlets that you can plug in a regular extension cord (preferable a HD 12G cord).

Try 30, then 50, then 20.  15 isn't enough and for Labor Day in Florida going without AC isn't even funny.

Thanks everyone.  Answered the question perfectly... need a/c ergo need min 30 amps.  did not think of looking for up to 50 amps.
