Title: Tow Vehicles
Post by: MoJoCamping on Sep 13, 2007, 06:40 PM
we have a 2005 tundra, E-2 Fleetwood.  Tundra pulls like a dream, we just visit gas stations a little more often.

Pull my '86 Coleman Sun Valley with my 1997 Kia Sportage 4cyl (168,000+ miles). Tows it fine, without any sway and gets about 23 mpg while towing (26-27 during normal driving).

Well if we're going to unusual tow vehicles, I use a 1990 model year 6' 1" boy to help me move mine around the driveway.  Works great once you get past the girlfriend and the tempramental attitude.

:D

My "road going" tow vehicle is a '98 Ford Explorer 4WD. I don't have any pics of it since they are a dime a dozen. It's got a Yakima rack on top for the other toys. It has a 4.0 SOHC six cylinder motor which is surprisingly strong and totes the toys pretty well.

I also have a '79 F100 with a super six (300ci six with a 4brrl Holley, plus a few extras) that I can tow with if I need to bring along the buggy. I've still got to add power brakes, better gearing, and possbily power steering to better tote the camper.
More info here if interested: http://www.fordtrucks.com/user_gallery/displayalbum.php?&userid=104856&albumid=21535

I've got too many hobbies as it's hard to keep up with all the forums I'm on now. This one seems like a great one, so I'll probably "camp-out" here for awhile.

I'm digging your camper Mojo. That's sweet with the ground clearance and the rack on front. I like the different look it has compared to the typical PUPs.

There was a thread just like this here (//%22http://www.arveeclub.com/showthread.php?t=64348%22) recently.

Anyhow, here's my rig. A 2005 Pathfinder with 270 Hp @ 5600 rpm, 291 lbs of torque @ 4000 rpm, 6000 lbs tow rating, 600 lbs hitch rating, and 1307 lbs payload rating, pulling a 2007 Starcraft 2406.

Our TV is a Ford one ton van, it has a V10 gas engine and 4 wheel drive.

To get out PU to look right [with the lifted van] we did an axle flip.

I had a 2000 Tundra, and then traded it for a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe LX AWD.  However, last Sunday my Santa Fe sustained substantial damage. I hit a full-grown escaped cow that was wandering across a rural highway at dusk. :yikes:

I hope to have it replaced with a 2007 or '08 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited AWD as soon as the dealer can locate one with the color and options we want.

Just changed tow vehicles from a 4.0L V6 266 Hp/ 288 lbs of torque (new revised rating system) 4X4 2005 Pathfinder to a new 2008 Ford Explorer Sport Trac 4.6L V8 4X4 with 292 Hp/ 300 lbs of torque.

Pathfinder was rated for 6000 lbs of towing and 600 lbs of tongue weight with a 112" wheelbase. The new Sport Track is rated for 7000 lbs of towing and 730 lbs of tongue weight with a 131" wheelbase.

The Sport Trac should be a better tow vehicle.

1961 Mercedes 190C Gas.  Originally purchased in Norway, spent many years in France and was finally shipped here when the serviceman's tour was over.  Sat exposed to the elements in a car port from about 1981 until it was given to me in '07. There was almost nothing left that was useable other than the engine, transmission and radiator.  I used the engine to put a very nice '66 230 back on the road as a 200.

THANKS!!! I have a real weakness for the fintail mercedes. I had a 64 220B but I didn't have the $$ or time to properly restore it so I sold it! I miss that car, though now I have parts I can't use. Those old Benz are just great!

They are wonderfully built cars, fantastic looking, and they make excellent daily drivers.  I've been lucky enough to rescue 3 of the w110 chassis cars (single headlamp, short nose) in the last 3 years and then once finished, find excellent homes for them.

Hope you renew your enthusiasm and pick one up.  They are an excellent value right now, and their following is pretty intense.

My own is a '66 mechanically injected coupe with electric sliding roof and 4 on the floor.  Very rusty from a horrid previous life, and almost not worth saving, but I love her and enjoy her anyway....
