I would like to purchase a metal detector to add another activity to our family's camping adventures. I think it would be fun to look for treasure (or at least loose change). When we camp at Ocean Lakes Campground at Myrtle Beach SC, my children and I have seen people use their detectors at the ocean's edge. We would like to find a detector that is simple, yet effective and will work in the surf. I found a model that seemed to fit this called a "Viper" http://store.aardvarkdetectors.com/products.php?cat=60&src=google&q=viper+metal+detector. Does anyone have experience with this or other detectors? Any help or advice would be appreciated.
My suggestion would be to buy the best detector you can afford. I bought a lower-line White Coinmaster in 1985. While it has been fun, ever since I have been wishing for a better model. With my cheap detector (it was about $105.00 new) I have sometimes found coins by sight before the detector picks them up. I had bought mine from a local archery shop.
Although I have no experience with them myself, the amount of information at http://www.kellycodetectors.com/indexmain.htm has always impressed me.

FYI if you plan on doing some treasure hunting I suggest to ask around first where ever you go metal detecting. Most Campgrounds both state/national and private have lots of rules now about where you can hunt. In fact I know it's altogether banned on Govt. Property and must beaches during the season. just an FYI
