Title: Demographic
Post by: Used 2B PopUPTimes on Nov 21, 2007, 10:04 AM
I'm constantly asked about the demographics of the average popupper. I don't want personal info, just a few honest answers.

you might have asked about purchasing new/used, and various amenities, current camping style (boondocking/campground), (state parks)(weekends/holidays/vacation).

Many of us might have been former tent campers, some of us might even be retired, and, as to purchasing a new unit - would it be a popup with more features, amenities, or travel trailer, etc.

In addition, the children question - you might have said "under 18", as some of us have grown children and grandchildren who will join us.

You could also find out if any Puppers are 'members' or use camping discount programs.

Another question would be how far do you travel to camp?

I could only ask 15 questions

I am finding this poll a bit interesting so I just thought I would bump it back up.

Couple of things in the poll that seem to stick out are:

1.  No one in their 20's has answered.  Does this mean:

A.  They can't afford a popup
B.  They only tent camp
C.  They think it is only old poops that own popups.

2.  Amount of income it seems to take to own a popup

A.  75+ is not earned generally by someone in there 20's.  Some of this figure could be attributed to double incomes.

B.  20 year olds are hoping to save for a house and don't have the discretionary income.

I just find it interesting that people who are into their 30's to 50's make up the majority of popuppers.

Just my own observations.

Gene, I think all of the reasons you hit on are factors.

I didn't have one in my 20's for pretty much all of those reasons.

Another one to add is the addition of kids.  More and more these days, many couples aren't having kids until into their late 20's or early 30's.  I was 30 when my first was born (33 now.)   One of the reasons I wanted a pop up was to re-live with my kids the fun I had camping with my parents.

Camping is a fun, normally safe, affordable family-friendly form of entertainment.  Hence many getting involved after kids come along.

Great observations folks ... I'm in my 50's now, and thankfully my two children are grown.  As to income to have a PUP - I never considered a PU when raising my kids - did the tent thing as tent camping was such a great inexpensive vacation.  I will note that the majority of my co-workers (married/single) over the years were highly into 'status'....their idea of vacations was to fly somewhere, stay in a condo or luxury motel, incur lots of credit card debt and cry over finances until the next vacation!   I've always had a motto to live cheaply so I would have the funds to enjoy life!

Not sure if I fit the mold or not.  I was 39 and 43 when my kids were born.  Didn't start camping until I was 45 when I was given a 1969 tent camper.  Never camped other than a couple of Boy Scout outings when I was a kid.  But DW and I have made up for lost camping time over the past 20 years.

Just another item, I noted that there are not many that own popups in the over 60 category.  I guess many of the seniors are now into the 5'er, MH or TT.  At 60, I did own a popup then the htt and now the tt.

I'd still say you fit the mold as you didn't start until after kids came along.

In my 20's I had a used slide-in truck camper (dinette/bed, sink, furnace, icebox, cabinets, and of course, built-in stereo) on a 4WD pickup truck.  This made a lot more sense in my 20's as it was an inexpensive purchase, and there were no kids, and it was used year-round.
