I did it twice.  Once when DS wanted to see the John Lennon art show at Virginia beach, and a second time when same DS wanted to go to a Dave Matthews concert in Va Beach. DD came on that trip.

I didn't have any problems either time.   Go for it, and enjoy!

DH never camps with us.  I go with the kids, friends or alone.:)

I go camping both with and without DH also.  Womens weekends come to mind first. When we camp local I often show up first with the camper and set up cause he has to work Saturdays quite often.

No reason you can't do it.

Hi,

I camp quite a bit without my husband.  We had a Palomino Filly which wasn't all that complicated so I learned the basics with that camper.  When we bought the Hemlock I was a little intimidated at first but once I towed it, it wasn't all that bad...just a bigger rig.  There's quite a bit more to know since there are some differences and quite a few more amenities that need some tending to.  What I did to help myself was go around with my husband as he did each task and ask questions as we went along.  Interestly enough I did find that I was more capable than I thought which stemmed from me doing the research on the pop up boards and all.  That always helps one's confidence.

I did have an incident this fall where I allowed myself to be distracted and forgot to remove my friction bar which ended up causing some damage to my coupler...I guarantee that'll never happen again. :)

You are only going to learn by doing.  It is a very freeing thing to know I can pack up and take off whenever the opportunity presents itself.  I can also go earlier and DH can join us after work on Fridays...so that benefits him too.

Stepping out on my own allowed me to take my daughter away for a conference my DH didn't want to attend...and allowed me to take the kids off on our own with their friends when DH didn't want to go.  So everyone wins.

Try it...it's almost as addicting as doing mods.

CC

I DO ALL THE TIME!!!!

piece of cake... I take the kids for an extended trip each summer. DH works on a contract basis and if he is not at work he doesn't get paid. we try to arrange for him to meet us by train and drive home with us.
My longest trip with the kids was just over 2 weeks and we went up to Washington state and back...

YOU GO GIRL!!!

I take the kids and go camping without DH most of the time.  There are many other women on the board that do the same thing.  Then there are others that have non-camping DH's, so what is a girl to do?  They go and camp with out him is what they do.  Girl camping trips are lots of fun.

I'm single, no kids.  I camp with my sister(s) - often with a group of friends but just as often not.  My parents taught us the joys of camping and we decided we wanted to continue even though we may not be a "traditional" family group.  Sure, there have been some challenges and I will freely admit that backing up is still not fun but I wouldn't give it up for anything.  We laugh that we we probably cook more when we are out camping than we do at home.

The times we have gone camping, more often than not, hubby follows us up several hours later, which means me and the kids have to get everything set up, so far, we have had no issues, unless you count the mysterious hole next to the rock when we pitched our tent in Sedona....but we won't go there.... lol  We are planning several trips next summer when hubby can't go due to work.  His job is typically slow in the winter and work like a madman in summer.  So this summer he won't be tagging along, which is fine, he tends to drive me nuts anyway.. lol

I do it all the time - heck it's "MY" camper.  I hookup, tow, back in, set up and enjoy -- solo.

Back in the day...SO would sometimes go with me, or maybe join me at the CG, or not.  He had the idea that it was a 'man' thing to do the sewer dump (yea - right - so where was he when diapers needed changing?).

Actually, I was just trying to encourage more participation.

A lot of woman in the SCCAMPERS group tow & set-up by themselves. Shoot, my wife is in her 60's (I didn't say that :p ) and she can do everything but the backing of the trailer. Actually, she could do that too.....she's just intimidated by it.  That's where "Superman" takes over :sombraro: .

Then again.....they are hardy and fit SoCal woman........I doubt woman from other areas could do it on their own. :J

I go every spring and fall with a group of male friends, we camp, fish, lie, eat , hunt, fart, and drink. Mostly drink. We stay in pups, tents, travel trailers, cars, trucks, or where ever. A few years back one of the group said he purchased a pop up. After a few years of not seeing it I asked him why he did not take it. He said Sandy would kill me, I don't know how to set it up, she's the only one who knows how. She goes with the DD and grandkids all the time.....Shredder

I know my wife could do it...if she would try. However, she always does a beautiful job on the inside of the trailer, and we never go camping without the other, so that leaves the outside MANLY MAN  :p stuff for me to do.

A year or two after we married, she did tell me that she thought about getting my truck for some bogus excuse, taking the popup to a favorite campground, and setting up while I was at work, and surprising me. But, for whatever reason, she decided not to do it. I think towing intimidated her. I have tried to get her to at least drive a few miles with me in the passenger seat, just so her first time wouldn't be under duress (me sick or absent). I know she could do it; she just needs some experience.

I like it when I see females camping without their male counterparts! Hey...at least they are camping!

(Boy...wish I had known some single female campers, when I was single...  :p  :p )

BRAT!!!  lol  Just for that, I'll go camping this weekend by myself in my huge cabin tent.. LMAO  NOT!!!

I do very much prefer hubby coming with us, I do enjoy his company, but it's not necessary.  I like my big bulkingly strong superman with me, because I am but a petite fragile woman that can't do anything by myself.. lol  Oh lord, if only that were true... NAHHH  I like being my big self.. lol.  Hubby is 6'3" 185 lbs, and I am a BIG girl.. lol  I can handle myself.  Never been much for the princess type.  Comes with being a tomboy growing up.

I bought the camper and usually my dd and her sons go along with me. Occasionally my DS goes but only if it is a private campground with "stuff to do".
I've been camping by ourselves for many years. It was tent camping for a long time until I got too old to bring up all the camping stuff out of the basement all the time. Much easier now. I don't need no stinkin' men!!!  :D

I do!  Camp without a male partner ~ I mean.   :p

The kids and I have camped by ourselves for 4.5 seasons now.  I had towed a camper prior to separating from their dad and I was always the one to set everything up anyway.  I did have to learn how to back up ... and I'm proud to say I can do that.  Sometimes!  :D  Sometimes it just takes a long long time!  The kids know to be quiet while I try and try again.  As they've gotten older they've got to be really good helpers.

We camp a lot with a group of Minnesotans ~ in fact for the first few years they didn't count it as camping unless we went with a group!  This past summer we spent 10 days in the UP and northern Wisconsin all by ourselves and lived to tell the tale!!  Next summer we're off to Montana for about 2 weeks.

It always amazes me when people (usually non-campers) say ~ "You really tow that and take your kids all over the country?" ~  um ... yep.  If I didn't, who would?  I want to see those places as much as I want the kids to see them!!

You know what's REALLY cool?  When you (a woman) take it out by yourself and camp by yourself.  You don't have to take care of other people, prepare their food, or do what THEY want to do.

I take books, mending jobs (sewing), a portable DVD and plenty of vino!!

Had 'er five years now and I STILL can't reverse it worth a darn!  Most of the time, I can find some kind gentleman to park it for me.

We have been known for one to carry the camper to the campground and then the other join later (particularly during the school year).  DD and I have camped by ourselves on a couple of occasions and really enjoyed it.  The only problem I've ever had was with the backing.  When we had the popup (which I'm sort of missing these days), I could back it in rather well because I could see the over the camper and see the way it was reacting to my turning of the steering wheel.

You can do it; there's always someone willing to help if you get in a bind at the campground.  I've always taken some pepper spray with me for "security" when we camp by ourselves but never used it.  If you have kids, give them a chore to help with setup and make yourself a checklist to go through for the first couple of times.

DH and I always swap off the towing duties - except the trip to Disney that I drove the whole way (all 13 hours of it).  We made sure I was OK with towing it bringing it home from Ohio.  So I wasn't afraid to tow it later.

Kerri

When camping solo I make sure I put out all three chairs, a Miami-Dade Police (where I work as a civilian) Dept. baseball cap visible.  I heard that having a man's pair of shoes in front of the door is also a good protective device!  :)

Of course, two barking dogs help.

I think I enjoy the solo aspect of the great getaways....I don't have to pack up and hit the road by a certain time to be home to "catch the game".  If I want to broil a steak for breakfast - or have pancakes for dinner - noone there to tell me I've got life reversed!  If I just feel like laying on the bunk and reading a book all day - no one telling me not to.

I do enjoy being able to do what I want to, when I want to - with no static!  Of course it's nice to share experiences, but part of my desire to 'get away' - is just that - some time to regroup!

Significant Other had never been camping - and I took him tent camping a few years back and he really enjoyed it.  Then my RA hit really hard and I couldn't do the packup, set up - and sleeping on the ground was miserable.  So, I bought the PUP (Fleetwood Niagara), towed it home, and drug him with me for our first camping trip - a visit to his daughter.  He loved it. And, we took two vehicles for one camping trip which worked out great - he was able to go help his buddy remodel his house and I wasn't stranded at the campground.  Then too, I would tow, set up and be all cozy and he could join me when he got off work, and he'd go from the campground to work and I'd break camp at my leisure.  He and I have since separated, but still speak.  He's in FL hoping I will come visit.  I camped last year in FL and he joined me for a week and loved it.

Up until I bought the PUP, I had little to no experience towing and/or backing into a space.  But, it wasn't difficult to learn, and it took some practice.  I used my local schools parking lot on a Sunday morning.  I read my owners manual and made a set up/take down list which really helped.  I also bought a "Couple-Mate" (V shaped fitting for the hitch which will guide the tongue over the ball).

Heck - if I can do it - anyone can!

Wavery - ever hear this?

"A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle!"

Men are amusing.  Nice for cuddling on a cold night. (but then, so is my dog, Fizzy)

But there isn't anything a man can do that I can't (except pee standing up!)

I grew up camping in a tent, and I love my PUP.  I've been a single mom for 15 yrs, and my son learned all his camping/ scouting skills from ME.  :tent: I started him camping with my church singles group when he wasn't even 2.  His dad wouldn't know a sheepshank from a square knot, or how to start a campfire without gasoline - much less without matches!

Many males are physically stronger than I am - and I'm not a small, petite woman. But not everything takes brute strength, and most often, I can figure out a way to compensate for the strength factor, when necessary.

My SO, Paul, loves that I'm more than capable of taking care of myself, (and him!)  and I appreciate that he likes to spoil and pamper me sometimes.  Paul had camped before - but he admits that he would not have trusted anyone else to talk him into an over night canoe trip on a river - except for me - as he had never been canoeing before.  He may be better at taking care of our vehicles - because cars are a lifetime hobby of his - but he readily defers to me when it came to rebuilding his water- damaged condo, as I know much more about construction.

Wavery - I know you're goading us females with your tongue-in-cheek humor - so I have a  :Z proposition for you -

Next time you're up here in the Midwest, lets have a trailer backing, campsite setup, camp skills contest - guys against gals - and let a girly-muscled, blonde, middle aged Girl Scout show you how it's done!

Deal? :p

I do believe you've rendered him speechless -- no small feat!!!

Thanks to all of you who've chimed in.  I've traveled solo since starting this venture, first with a friend's Class C, then my own PUP, and now my own HTT.  Sure, guys are helpful when setting up/taking down sometimes, but then so is anyone who can speak coherently & has an extra set of hands.  I'm short, and putting the bunkends up on the HTT sometimes requires another set of hands, just because I need to climb a stepstool to get them latched.  But I found a telescoping pole that does just fine when there aren't extra hands available.  As far as the backing up part ... hitching is easy, with my little magnetized hitching poles (courtesy of CW).  Backing up is still a pain in the patutty, and I don't make any excuses.  I can do it, but if given the chance will always let someone else if they volunteer -- be they man or woman.  I just don't like doing it.

Again, it's not about brawn.  It's about figuring things out & doing them in a way that makes sens to us.

BTW, Wavery will NEVER meet you in the Midwest -- you all have way too many mosquitos!  Maybe you ought to come our way.  His wife, Carolyn, would dearly love to meet you -- as would I!

Wavery must be taking the day off - I don't think anyone could actually render him speechless! LOL!

I'd Love to come out west - I've seen some other camper's photos of camping in the rockies, and I'd love to bring my PUP out to visit my sister - she lives in Las Vegas, NV - but with only 5 vacation days a year, it isn't likely to happen
:(

At least, not until I retire, and with my job and pay, that'll probably be ... never!

I generally save my few days off to add to holidays and have 'mini-vacations'.  It the only thing that keeps me sane!

I hate the mosquitoes here, too - but they LOVE me!  I get bit when no one else does, and I'm highly allergice to bug bites, too.  Still, they've never kept me from enjoying the outdoors!

Did it all the time during the 2006 season because of my hubby's work schedule. I would take the PUP & kid to the campground on Friday after work, and hubby would join us for the night (usually by 9pm). He would go back to town (20-30 minutes) for a Saturday afternoon shift, then join us again in the evening. We normally had Sunday without him having to work. 2007 season, ironically enough, he was working M-F and we went camping less!! But we did have a whole week camping in late August plus a few weekends here and there.

Azusateach, you have answered one of my question about being in a HTT and camping by yourself... I wonder how you would open those bed ends...They are heavy.   We would love to up grade to HTT, our 10 foot box is so small for the four of us...

What did happen to Waverly???? I hope he is camping because it snowing here in Michigan.  So our girly muscles is shoveling snow!

Brenda, it's not the weight on the HTT bunk-ends -- it's the height.  They're really not bad to push up, as long as you can reach high enough to latch them.  Again, it's not a matter of brawn -- it's the brains to figure out how to get the job done.  So, go shopping for a HTT & don't worry about a thing.  If a 5'2" squirt can do it solo, anyone can!

Next time you're up here in the Midwest, lets have a trailer backing, campsite setup, camp skills contest - guys against gals - and let a girly-muscled, blonde, middle aged Girl Scout show you how it's done!

Deal? :p

Laura

 :U

Michigan cold air will not be good for that Broncitis.  You think it hurts to breathe now, breathe that cold air in, its like having razors in your chest....

I would love to get out of this cold winter stuff and go camping!

But who put the whammy on Waverly?  Hopefully you have a nice nurse with girly muscles to take care of you! :S

Welconme back,Wavery!

See I knew you couldn't be rendered speechless - breathless maybe :p  - but not speechless!

I've been out, too, for almost 2 weeks with that nasty bronchitis/ sinus infection.  Got to the point last Wed where I couldn't breathe & my mom called 911 and had me taken to the hosp.  I don't have pnuemonia, but close. They loaded me up with monster antibiotics, steroids and breathing treatments and finally got my lungs open again. But that 'nasty cold air' actually feels good to me!  Of couse, it's getting ready to snow again today, so it's not all that cold and it's nice & fresh & humid.  Why do they keep hospitals so hot? I felt like I was being baked to death in there! After 36 hrs in that hot, dry hospital, I'm enjoying a bit of fresh air. ( But not too much!)
I've  missed more than a week of work. since we don't have sick days, I'll probably have to use my vacation time. Which will mean less camping time this summer.
I need a better job.

The ER nurses here said there's been alot of this going around all over - people start with what seems to be a cold, but quickly settles in your chest, often with a sinus infection, too.  then they either get fluid in the lungs, (pnumonia) or bronchial swelling - either way -you can't breathe. not fun.    I get these little spurts of energy - try to tackle the laundry or make something to eat - then I run out of air quick, and my ambition pops like a deflated balloon!

So if any of you are exposed to this bronchial thingy - eat properly, get loads of sleep, and STAY HEALTHY!  it's no fun and the Dr says it will be 6 weeks or so before I feel "normal' again.   (Just in time to spend a month or so  working on the camper and start camping?)

then, when we get all our wind back - maybe we'll have us a contest, huh Wavery?

Wow, you all just keep those germs! Better yet get rid of them! That's the only part of winter I hate... everyone is germy...  That why we need to get out in the fresh air and get rid of those germs...

I am glad to see you are feeling better waverly... and scoutermom, you need to get better soon, can't take that camping time away...

I have been winterized for  2 months now and starting to go crazy... I need to go camping...  :eyecrazy:   Might just have to sleep in front of the fireplace in the livingroom... ;)  Just to smell the smoke from a fire might ease my craving.. Or it could make it worse...

Holly and I are also recovering from a GI bug. Fortunately, we had a friend who volunteered to keep Jessie overnight so we could spend our night in the bathroom. :eyecrazy:

Most of our camping is simply my girls and me. DH goes along once in a while--does help with the set up and take down--but seriously, we're fine alone too.

Wow, sorry to hear everyone's gotten so sick!  Man, serious stuff there.  Hope you are all doing better soon.

And....I still haven't camped with a male partner.  Not that there's anything wrong with that!

Our camping trips usually consist of long weekends since DH hasn't been able to take off a lot of time lately (except for the big 1-weeker when we go to Maine).  So, the boys and I usually will get there on a Weds or Thurs and set up.  DH joins us directly from work on Friday, sleeps over Fri & Sat, then either go home on Sunday or commutes Mon morning (usually if it's under 2 hours).  We usually will leave later Monday (to avoid traffic).
