Title: Natchez Trace
Post by: CajunCamper on Dec 10, 2007, 11:58 AM
Has anyone driven the Natchez Trace and camped along the way? What campgrounds did you stay in and what was your opinion of them? Also what sites did you see along the way.

My wife and I are thinking of spending a weekend on the Trace. Probably won't travel that far, but will get on the Trace in Natchez Ms.

I have not yet traveled the Trace, but have done a smidget of research.  I am a member of thousand trails, so would probably spend time at their Preserve.  However, there is a national park website for the Trace, with a listing of campgrounds along the route.  The listing is from south to north, indicating the mile post/by state, and some amenities, as well as phone numbers.
If interested in boondocking, Meriwether Lewis (NPS) gets a good review.

I have travelled the entire Trace but have not camped on it.  Beautiful drive and should be great for towing.  Natchez is ALWAYS a great place to start!!

I have been to, but not camped at Meriwether Lewis. Very quiet area. We live near the Trace in Middle Tennessee. It is a beautiful drive. Don't expect to cover a lot of miles, though. Most places we traveled, the speed limit was 40-50mph.

ON EDIT: I remembered that I have some pictures from the ML cg:

Meriwether Lewis in Tn is a nice quiet park but it's primitive camping only and I "think" the bathhouse closes at the end of October. It's part of the National Park Service. It's a beautiful area around there. Here's a link to the 3 park service campgrounds on the trace.

I have tried tracing it, but it is difficult to get back very far. However, my grandfather thought that I was a descendant of one of Davy's brothers. Therefore, I guess he is my uncle.
