I am helping a friend shop for a used Pup. Their budget is small, but their, and my own, repair skills are high. I came across a 1991 Coleman Plantation for sale. It appears in good shape from the pics, but the seller says it needs new lift cable(s), which he has to go with it. I am sure it will need tires, and typical maintenance.
I am not familiar with the model, but it appears to have been a high end unit. It has a hard walled shower/potty area, huge bunks (it's 26'+ long when openend), all typical appliances (except A/C), and double propane tanks.
Does anyone have any experience with these units? Did they come with brakes?
They are only asking $500 for the unit, so we are keeping our expectations low. But it seems worth the 2 hour road trip to go check it out.
Thanks for any input.
jim,
i think you would be safe on this, in 1991 it was THE top of the line. It had a retail price of around $10,000.00. On any coleman/fleetwood it will be easy to replace the lift cable(s) since the cables are ALL seperate from each other and they are attatched together via a "wiffle" tree. I think that it would definetly be worth the 2 hour road trip and the $500. Just make sure sure that canvas is in good shape and there arent any leaks, if it has leaked, see how far it has gone, but keep in mind a saturday afternoon and some new wood and a cold barley pop can fix it!

Thanks CF. I appreciate the feedback. The plan is to go look at it on Sunday. If it is a keeper, I'll throw some pics up here. I sure hope it has brakes already.

I have an 88 Plantation which ironically I also got for $500. There are six of us and we love it! I had to replace one of the lift cables and though I am not what you would call mechanically inclined I was able to do the job by myself and it wasn't all that hard. If he has the cables they may be factory cables that are pre-cut to size. I had to make my own. ($12 for all the parts at Home Depot. Not including the tool to crimp the clamps on the cable ends) I would suggest getting that tool if needed. I forget what it's called.
We also have the toilet and shower though they are separate and not walled. Mine does have trailer brakes. My pup is 18' 5 1/4" closed and about 28'3" open. I tow it with an 05 Expedition and it pulls great.
I have enclosed a link with some pictures of our Plantation. If it's in decent shape I would go ahead and get it. I had an offer of 3 times what I paid for it the day I brought it home.

Jim where is the trailer located?
Gary - Thanks for the link to your pictures. I am not sure if my friend has made contact with the seller yet. Hopefully it is still available.
Tracy - It is in Southern NJ. Hopefully it will be worth the trip.

You're welcom Jim. I had a guy tell me last fall that he and his wife full timed in their Plantation for 2 1/2 years. A little hardcore for me.
