Post by: orion nebula on Apr 08, 2008, 06:21 PM
Hello everyone, I'm thinking of trading in my 96 coleman laredo on a new quicksilver 10.0. Does anyone have any experience with these pop up's. I like the fact that they are all aluminum and very lite. I looked at one today and was quite impressed. any opintion's?

Orion,

Welcome to PUT!

We seriously considered getting a quiksilver10 when we were researching campers.  Ultimately we decided that a more "traditional" popup would be better for a number of reasons.  Although the aluminum floor is lightweight, we were concerned about cold weather use, and keeping the camper warm.  We also wanted a traditional door rather than the soft tent door, as I know with our boys the zipper door would never get closed and the 'skeeters would fill the camper.  Setup in the rain looked dicey with respect to the bedding potentially getting wet.  Perhaps if we did not have kids it would have gotten more consideration, but ultimately we found our Viking and are quite happy.

The Quicksilver really is much more of a tent trailer much like the industry standard was 40-50+ years ago.  If it suits your needs and you are willing to exchange some conveniences and comforts for the light weight, go for it!

I also originally considered a Quicksilver, as we have a local dealer.  They appeared very well built and lightweight.  However, they were quite expensive and many options are not available, so it was quickly dropped off our list of possible purchases.  For not much more money, we got heated matresses, stove, refrigerator, roof AC, storage trunk, and furnace, none of which were available on the Quicksilver. We have found that we use the furnace, stove, and heated matresses quite a bit, extending the camping season into the 20 degree temperatures.

I have the 10.0 and really like it.  If your idea of camping is watching satellite TV and waiting for the lean cuisine to come out of the microwave, then you had best look elsewhere.  If you like to have a more simple camping experience, then the quick silver is a good option.  It tows like a dream and sets up easy.  There is almost nothing to go wrong on them.  The tent part is $500 bucks, so if it ever goes bad $500 has got you into a like new camper again.  For me it's the camper that fits the bill.  But, everyone has different needs and there are lots of good campers out there.

When the dealer showed one to me he showed me the two-burner standard green coleman stove and electric space heater that came with the camper.  With the vinyl upolstetery and the aluminum floors, and full fabric instead of laminated roof, I was concerned that it would be quite hard to keep warm when camping below freezing.  Have you had any experience in using the Quicksilver off-season yet?  How did it do in cold weather?
