We are not new to camping but have downsized after 5 years of camping in an RV. We purchased a Coleman Sante Fe. We have water storage tank but no hot water. Would appreciate any suggestions on the best ways to heat water for shower, dishes, etc. We have looked into the Zodiac and Coleman hot water on demand. I am enjoying this site and hoping to get some good ideas. Thanks !
I have heard a lot of good comments about the Coleman hot water on demand and it is one of the items on my "wish list". The only thing I have heard bad about the Zodi unit is that you must keep water flowing all the while it is in use.
I have a Coleman Hot water on Damand and just love it...best thing since sliced bread. I highly recommend it and use it often for many other uses outside of camping.

We had one also, HAD. It was a GOD send, they work great! Didn't need anymore as our Bayside has hot water :-() ! Great for dishes and it is instant HW. Never had a problem with it. NOw SIL has it and loves it.
I too have been looking at these water heaters but I have seen prices from $200.00 to $135.00 what is the best deal anyone has seen? :U
How many gallons or cups does the CHOD heat at any one time? How long does it take to heat it? Is the carafe safe enough that you can carry water outside to wash dishes?

CW has them in their stores on sale right now for $145. I purchased mine about 18 months ago on clearance at Sports Authority for $120.
However, the best deals ever were with the
blue Oster branded version. Oster was marketing them as a hot water system for washing pets, (dogs and horses in particular). For a while, they could be found on the internet for as low as $49!
The HWOD takes about 5 seconds to start heating your water. It can heat as much as 40 gallons with a one pound disposable cylinder. Or, you can connect it to a water hose for more constant water, and a large propane tank.

The HWOD needs both propane and DC electricity to operate, (watch the video in the link provided above).
The electricity is provided by a rechargeable 6v battery inside of the unit. One battery charge will last for about 40 minutes of use, (that's alot of hot water).
You can recharge the battery from your TV's cigarette lighter outlet, or an available 110v A/C outlet.

Both the 1 lb propane and rechargeable battery lasts us over 20-30 nights camping. I purchased to garden hose accessory and bought multiple fittings to connect the Coleman to our pressurized popup fresh water system - it works great.
