Title: Both a Boat trailer and Pop Up...
Post by: sacrawf on Apr 15, 2008, 08:36 PM
I am considering getting a small (13 to 17 foot) fishing boat with trolling motor, swivel seats, navigations lights, built-in livewell and storage, a 9.9 HP outboard motor, and a galvanized trailer for fishing at local ponds, reservoirs, and lakes. Many of these lakes are electric only, or have a 10 HP limit, and are in state parks or have campgrounds nearby. I have ruled out canoes, kayaks, and port-a-boats to get more room to stretch out the legs for long days or nights of fishing.

For those of you who have a both a trailered boat and a popup, do you tend to take two two tow vehicles, make two trips? Or do you find yourself only bothering to go boating or camping only?

What you need is a boat big enough to sleep in... :D

Ah, yes ... a 14' aluminum fishing boat with a 9.9 hp motor and a sturdy enough boat trailer to also tote all the camping gear, too! See, you arrive at the C/G site, back the boat in, unload all the camping gear, set-up this tent ...

Now, you get to sleep under real canvas, cook with your Coleman stove, maybe even have a screen room and a boat and motor to satisfy those fishing "needs".

Fly, who's always trying to help ... :o

On my first PU (built like a tank) in the 70's I put my aluminum fishing boat on the PU top, the outboard in the back of the truck and off I went. Still see a few on the road like this, and some with the boat over the truck on mounts for the same. Now with a wimpy 2005 model PU, I stay close, pull the PU with one vehicle and the boat with the other, with DW towing the boat. It helps that I live by many lakes, rivers, fishing and camping places. Both work well, but my new method is not practical for long trips.....Shredder

Put a hitch on the back of the popup and tow them both.

Check the law in your State. Very few States allow towing tandom trailers. Illinois is one of them......but........

Only with a 5th wheel as 1st tow and not to exceed 60' total vehicle length.

Sorry about that.  I was just trying to be funny.

I sorta figured that but a lot of people read this forum and some people do things just because "other people do it" or "I read on the net that it was OK". We never know who is reading this stuff and how they will handle the information.

We actually get a few people that seriously consider towing a PU in tandem :eyecrazy: .

2 vehicles. Last time my boat wouldn't crank. Wish I had just brought 1 vehicle and the kayak.

It might not work with a Ford SportTrac, but....!  Try a Heimgartner (http://www.trailersystems.com/)!

I have also seen a boat lift contraption that can flip an aluminum fishing boat on top of a truck, (Jamic), saw one last year in the High Sierra's, but I can't find a good link?

Notice that the TT in that picture is not hooked up to the truck. The combination would easily be 1 ton. Doesn't sound like something that I would like to do.

Let's not even get into wind resistance and/or strong side winds  :yikes: .

I dont think i would like to try that combo!!! Looks really scary to me! I have seen my share of RVs and TV on their sides in the middle of the interstate.......Bet if you try that you will need a Wrecker in the near future!
